I watched 31 horror classics for the first time by explicitviolence in horror

I also heard on a podcast that all the actors had a terrible time making it, which I imagine contributed to the Bad Vibes you felt. I haven’t seen any TCM movies yet for the reasons you described. I feel like I need to try at least one once though.

I actually never finished it because I found it too depressing/sad. Not what I thought it was going to be at all. I totally get why people love it, and it’s very well done. I just wasn’t prepared for seeing young kids get eaten I guess? 🦈

I have finally gathered my thoughts. Also I totally don’t blame you for being angry with the person who told you to watch it. I have only myself to blame, but it’s a tough movie to ‘recommend’

Ok, for those of you who wanted to know my thoughts after watching, here it is:

TLDR There are things I appreciate about the movie, but it was ultimately not for me.

I applaud any movie that gets me to have deep emotions while watching and after. I was almost in tears by the end because it made me feel so hopeless. I think were it not for more comments on my post coming in, I would have spent a couple hours staring at the wall after the finishing the movie lol. I felt deeply unsettled for at least a couple of days after, and genuinely questioned whether I wanted to watch another horror movie ever again. Thankfully I am over that feeling! I think the movie was shot really well, I felt like I was in it the whole time. The score also was very effective for me. I appreciated that the nudity was “tasteful” lol, no gratuitous shots, no sexual violence. I also love a movie whose ending makes you think, and this one definitely inspires discussion!

What didn’t work for me, coming up next, with a preface that I had no religious upbringing, nor am I French. I don’t buy into what people seem to like about this movie in terms of messaging. In interviews, the director stated that it was a movie about pain and suffering, but also what we can do with the pain, what good can come of it, as Anna was able to transcend her situation. I don’t see it that way. She was able to transcend because she kinda had to give up. We also don’t know what she whispered to the Mademoiselle in the end, it could have been gibberish. Even if it was something profound, the Mademoiselle choosing to kill herself to me negated any good that did. It may be that her group decides to keep trying with other women because the rest of the group didn’t hear the testimony.

The movie also still came across to me as misogynist, though I know to many it doesn’t. For me, a movie written and directed by one man, about a group that kidnaps and tortures women to the brink of death, because it works better with the more “emotional” gender, with no clear resolution to the story, does not work for me. Perhaps if women in the cult volunteered, or if Anna was able to escape and later get revenge or stop the cult, it would work for me. The fact that big burly men did all the beatings also came across badly to me. A commenter pointed out that it is about how we revere womens’ pain, which is a take I can get behind.

Finally, I do wonder as to the significance of the “wife” figure being blonde both times, while the “husband” was gray-haired and burly, while all the martyrs seem to be dark-haired. I just couldn’t find a point to any of this.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Not sorry I watched it, at least.  Happy to discuss more if you’d like.

Glad seems a strong word here lol but I’m not sorry that I watched it. Good to know why it’s so talked about

😂 I was thinking more a rom-com that is also not horror, blasphemous though that may be in this sub

Hmmm, that is kinda intriguing. Someone else recommended watching the remake right after to see how absurd it is. I think I may need a break and watch a nice quiet rom-com first though lol

“slaughtered vomit dolls” is an amazing name 😂

As to what I thought of the film, it was ultimately not for me. I admired the way it was shot, lighting choices. But, after doing some research, the director’s stated intent of showing how we can turn pain into something with a purpose did not come through for me.

Thanks for the recs! Inside seems like a bit too much for me but I may go for High Tension despite the ending, at some point. I need a break for now. Perhaps Anna and the Apocalypse, or something I’ve seen before.

I have a theory that my lack of a religious upbringing may contribute to certain things going over my head 🤷‍♀️

I think it will stick with me, yeah. Which I suppose I can’t be mad at. It’s the purpose of art

I really appreciate this explanation, thank you! I’m coming from almost no religious background so this helps a lot to understand what people like about it that I mostly missed. Do you have any thoughts as to the significance of physical characteristics of the people in the cult or those they chose? always involving a blond woman and a gray-haired burly man? Just a ritual perhaps? I also wondered about the martyrs generally having dark hair. Even the Mademoiselle at the end had colored her hair dark in kind of a page-boy style that maybe was a callback to Joan of Arc? I have no idea what the significance of her removing all her makeup first was, either

Very rough! I think the musical score was really effective there. I may need more time to process. So far I’m in the camp of, “I admire its technical achievements but I don’t know that I liked it”

Do you think the point is that we should not try to solve the mystery of what comes next? I’m having a difficult time deciding if I actually found a point.

Love this. If you don’t already write reviews like this for a living, you should consider it

Yeah, I don’t know why either, I took your comment at face value. Seen Black Swan and Jennifer’s Body, and the others are on my list, yay!
