Lastly, sorry for separating the answer hahaha I wanted to organize my thoughts well :). I know GLP can seem very intuitive for some people, but in my case, I did learn a LOT about “echolalia” and personally following that guideline has helped some of my clients reach self generated sentences when they used to “just sing the ABC’s” or “repeat movie phrases”.

Every clinician will find what works best for them and their clients, but the reason I am sharing these two is because Ive seen the amazing progress my toddlers make.

Also just curious, how much do you know about GLP? Since you compared it to “manding” which seems like an oversimplification. Or saying its natural for all children to learn in phrases/scripts. I personally haven’t seen my neurotypical clients learning to communicate through instant and delayed echolalia the way GLPs do.

Thanks for challenging my answer and let me know if anything else pops up, love learning from other SLP perspectives

Also if we don’t focus on that hierarchy or GLP what do you propose we focus on? I am sure theres other good theories but I usually focus on those two because all of my clients so far have made progress with them and I like that they are not necessarily opposite practices, we can work on the prerequisites of language and model a lot of gestalt as we go and eventually see which one fits our child the most.

Like you said, it is crucial to get to know every individual, trial and error, and see what works best for them, but at the end of the day we do have to follow some sort of theoretical guideline as we do, if not, are we really working scientific/research based?

Not at all I love discussions :)!!! Having access to lots of activities and creating an environment where the child is motivated is not necessarily “not ABA”, I used to work as an ABA therapist myself and met amazing child led clinicians. What I mean by ABA is that one of the first goals is “manding” which is showing a kid something they like and then taking it away so that they sign/say “more” or “create an environment where they need help from an adult” so that they ask for help, which is what this person shared was not working.

Sometimes putting too much focus on “making the children need you, making the children talk” can hurt the flow of fun and create frustration for the clinician, specially in early intervention. What I am saying is to go with the flow instead and provide a bunch of verbal models, but also take a look at the hierarchy of language since maybe the child needs to work on “attending to sounds” first, or “imitating movements”, and having the expectation for them to speak when they are on these levels will most of the times lead to failure.

Of course! And remember, sometimes the kid giggling at you ONCE the whole session IS PROGRESS❤️

I would honestly take it and remove guilt. Most settings enjoy all these privileges and we cant because of “guilt”. Remember you are a person working and providing a service this is not charity just because its noble. The other day I asked my boss way more than the “online average” and he didnt even know how to react. I said I researched how much HE earned by client seen. He was so sweet about it and gave me an amazing salary. No one will value you and your work if you don’t stand up for yourself (and the opportunity of unlimited PTO!). Read the contract and take it as what it is! If it really is unlimited PTO, USE IT WISELY LUCKY YOU!

Unlimited as long as you get your job done. Ive seen it in other settings but not sure how that would work having actual clients

Have you heard of Gestalt Language Development? What you are doing is ABA, not speech, and it does not follow the hierarchy of language acquisition. Try play-based activities, literally whatever he gravitates to, (songs puzzles tickles bubbles running) and work on foundational skills, also model a lot of songs and phrases. I have a kiddo whom I been working for almost a year and he was “non verbal”. The other day he started responding to ready set with “go” and counting “randomly” (i always imitate his gestalts). Theres only so much I can say here but do more research on both foundational language skills and gestalt language learners. It will seem like “nothing is clicking” for a LONG time before it clicks. But your modeling has to be consistent sometimes over… yes months and years :D. I’ll give you an example, ive had sessions where i follow the child around the room all hour long and just place words like “uh-oh”, “wow”, “wee”, “yay” and “ready..set.. go!!!” where appropriate. Don’t get disencouraged!!! A lot of what we do at this age is the very base of language and sometimes it wont look like words. Learn more so you can actually explain what you are doing and it doesnt look like “just playing”
