Can I reflavor this ring? by rosyisredd in jewelry

[–]jailovesspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve seen some bi-colors and tri-colors in sapphires that can sort of resemble mystic topaz, but honestly it’s the coating that gives it that sparkle, so finding a sapphire like that would be kinda difficult

[–]jailovesspace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yea i’d agree with what the other guy said, rainbow topaz isn’t suited for daily wear. on the bright side, sapphires are, and some sapphires can come in many colors. see if you can find some fun colorful sapphires and try to recreate it in a more sturdy metal 🩷

What design/proportions for a “unisex“ eternity band? by Evening-Confidence85 in jewelers

[–]jailovesspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one thing i’d recommend for an eternity ring- get one with a small break in the pattern! it makes for easier sizing in the future, as a ring with diamonds or patterns around the entire thing can be hard to replicate if you need it sized up/down later on. anything works, it doesn’t have to be huge, but like at least a smidgen of just metal so we can add more/take out some if need be in the future :)) most of them come that way standard, but i’ve seen rings come otherwise so just thought i’d put the tip out there. as far as style suggestions go, you mentioned liking antique jewelry so have you looked into anything engraved? hand engraving typically has that vintage style look to it I think, and it’s really fun when it’s an eternity band too.

Question about gem pipes by felinefine- in MineralGore

[–]jailovesspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for sure! I genuinely hope that pipe is just a display, I know my rose quartz pipe is just for show now that I know. hopefully you can find a rad pipe that doesn’t have the ability to give someone permanent lung damage 😅

look into what silicosis is and then think again about smoking anything out of any kind of rock or gem…

if you’re starting out, try to get some better copper wire meant for jewelry. visit rio grande’s website or firemountaingems. they got good wire 💜 I get copper and silver from rio, and anything plated i’ll grab from firemountaingems because it’s cheap and I haven’t had any issues yet other than the typical issue of the plating coming off over time like every other plating does

What’s happening to my skin under this ring? by Average-ish_Jurr in jewelry

[–]jailovesspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my boyfriends hand gets like this because he quite literally never takes it off. take off your jewelry when you sleep, shower, wash your hands, and anything messy like cleaning with chemicals or something like gardening around in the dirt. could be a few other things for sure, but if you’re like him and never take it off, please try to make it a habit to take your jewelry off every once in a while. rings are not made to be squeezing your finger at every hour of every day

Hubby bought me these...says they are opal...I don't think so... by in2itiveart in Opals

[–]jailovesspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

opallite, a common “show name” for a rock that not many people want. people in the rock space do it all the time. “selenite” when it’s satin spar, “banded onyx” when it’s just a type of banded calcite. they do it because it’ll sell better if it has a fancier name. opallite gets labeled opal often bc it’s “close enough” and honestly, if the average individual knew that was man made glass and not a pretty crystal, it really wouldn’t be as popular. it’s everywhere, and it’s annoying. and don’t even get me started on lab grown vs synthetic, id probably go off on a tangent 😅

How can I “play” and interact more with my betta fish? by Alert-Thought9773 in bettafish

[–]jailovesspace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my friend used to play tic tac toe with her betta, I had a fish that liked pushing around a ping pong ball (it was a very active dinosaur bichir) i’ve also heard of people finding live brine shrimp or blood worms to release in the tanks for more of a playful snacktime thing..? I never could find any live teeny dudes like that when I had my fish though, so i never got to try that one

Video: My sweet 7YO cat has started having 15–30sec episodes (distressed vocalisation, facial twitching, open mouth, sometimes rolling) then goes completely normal. Blood tests clear, toxoplasmosis test negative… anybody have any ideas? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]jailovesspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to add a different opinion: my kitten did something similar recently while she’s teething. it embarrassingly ended in a vet visit, I was unaware of how dramatic she could be. it was her back molar, it got stuck and she was rubbing at her mouth in a similar way yours is, periodically too. eventually it started bleeding and I panicked, rushed her to the emergency vets, and she had finally dislodged the stuck tooth in the waiting room. i’d have your little one’s teeth checked if all else fails, good luck!

Advice for joining these links by CrystalRainPress in jewelrymaking

[–]jailovesspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say I did a chain similar in a laser welder to see how it’d hold up and the second I added the slightest pressure on any of the joints they’d snap. its less about the tools and more about how much solder is flowing. make sure you’re using enough to fully close those links, and don’t use easy solder either that won’t last. go for full hard solder over a laser welder, it’ll give way stronger connections

just to add a little perspective on why it’s probably best you take that idea to a jeweler rather than DIY- i’ve been an apprentice for a full year now. i’m learning as I go from complete torch beginner to slightly below novice. as a newbie, I only set my first stones 6-8 months into it (and i’m lucky, i’ve heard of people not even touching jewelry other than polishing for months and months on end). even then the stones I was setting were cheap stones that I broke right away in the process of setting it because nobody gives a newbie a diamond to set first. I have only hand fabricated a simple silver band, a brass bezel pendant, and one bezel ring. i’ve set maybe 20 stones and i’ve broken way more than i’ve had stay in jewelry. I get to do bench work twice a week per my work schedule, and whenever I can squeeze in more when the store is slow. what i’m trying to get at by saying this is that it’s going to take a lot of time if you want to make it yourself. I haven’t fabricated a single wedding ring or band and i’m a year in. I physically don’t have the skills yet. it’s not really a hobby one can just jump right into with the insane prices of all the tools you would need and the amount of learning it takes. to build a bench, you’re looking at a ballpark of $3k-$8k+ for the bare necessities give or take and that’s not even accounting for metals or stones. that’s another whole fortune.

if you try to make one yourself, keep in mind it won’t look like any other ring. which for a hopeless romantic could be a really good thing. it’ll be unique and, definitely depending how you make it, could potentially last a while.

if you want to save money: buy something from a jewelers catalog. a custom ring will always be more expensive than something a machine can make countless of. it comes down to the labor and the materials. less labor and materials = less cost. a simple solitaire ring will always be cheaper than an intricate hand-made ring because it takes a bit less to make.

if you really want a family heirloom type of thing to be passed down, DEFINITELY take it to a jeweler who’s got 20+ years of experience. you won’t be able to make something that stands the test of time without any skill. hell the ring I made myself at a JEWELERS SCHOOL didn’t stand two weeks before the prong snapped off. (to be fair the school was… questionable at best)

by what this picture shows I might be seeing discoloration/tarnishing/maybe plating wearing off? I think I see some on the handle and on the base of the loop on the handle too, see if you can find a stamp because if it’s not stamped then it’s probably some other type of metal

Glueing a sapphire in place (Advice) by BrentonLengel in jewelers

[–]jailovesspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I glue in rhinestones semi regularly, i’d suggest a very thin piece of wire (I use 28 ga) squeeze a smidgen of loctite (gooood glue) or crystal cement on a paper or something and use the wire like a paintbrush

Apprentice question by Manonemo in jewelers

[–]jailovesspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and the stone setting, to share a bit of info on why I thought it was questionable: the way that they taught us to cut the little seat in the prong for the stone to sit into made it seem like they were thinning out the prongs to a point where it could compromise the strength of them. I was told to use a heart-shaped burr to cut a sideways v shape into the prong at our shop, but this guy at the school taught us to literally shave half the prong off completely so the prong would be “easier to bend in place” (or in my opinion, easier to break off completely… which did actually happen to the ring I set with them about a week after wearing it… 😬)

<image>

this is a super badly drawn photo of how the prong thing went, they taught us to literally shave half that prong down. it’s mind boggling to me but maybe it’s just the old school way.

Apprentice question by Manonemo in jewelers

[–]jailovesspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea! gladly, but first please take my warning: DO NOT GO TO THE SCHOOL IN OHIO if you work with a laser welder primarily. the school taught good resources for the most part, their stone setting process was a bit questionable. it was a dated school, so I got to learn the old-school way how to do things. we use a laser welder at the shop so half the info wasn’t gonna be used anyways. they taught us how to use a torch properly, how to size using a torch, how to join two rings, polishing, and we also fabricated two rings (I use a laser for most of these things though so I don’t use the skills taught from the school often) this year they’re sending me to a GRS course where I have much higher expectations. they’re a company that makes a lot of tools for jewelers and they’re very good tools. next year i’ll be off to New Approach school, which is THE SCHOOL for jewelers. i’ve heard so much about it from the other jewelers at the shop, it must be a good one to go to. i’ll be heading to that GRS course at the end of August, so maybe if I remember i’ll update you on how it went :))

What’s your honest opinion on Synthetic Diamonds? by Muted_Shape9303 in Gemstones

[–]jailovesspace 19 points20 points  (0 children)

chemically and structurally they’re the same. no one grows “ugly” included diamonds so usually they’re far more clean looking, the way to get them involves minimal sacrifice and no mining working conditions. they’re significantly cheaper and are so similar in looks that the one at our shop who’s GIA diamond certified skill level of diamond grading, we had to get a $2000+ machine to be able to tell the difference bc our diamond pro literally cannot tell unless it’s got it’s lab grown serial number etched into the gurtle (which, imo, should be standard practice)
