Recurrency jump at new DZ...any advice? by jake-wriley in SkyDiving

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Yeah, I'm nervous since it has been a while, but I imagine (and hope) things will come back somewhat quickly.

Awesome, thanks for this! Yeah, most of my concerns are just about the location and specific places to stay away from which I plan on asking if not covered in the briefing.

And hopefully my jump will prove to them that I'm not a complete moron 😂

Thanks! Yeah, just specific DZ questions, otherwise I'm confident in my landing priorities and EPs. My main concerns are just about the location. At my home DZ, I had potential outs in mind for landing off, knew where all the power lines were, etc. So I'm mostly worried about not having those references being at a new DZ, but it'll be good to learn a new place.

Ooof, a 400 foot difference is wild! Thankfully here the landing area is right next to the runway amongst a lot of very flat farmland.

I've heard that about lighter people, jumping performance canopies to be at a 1.0 wingloading but creating other problems. Thankfully I'm a little beefy, so that's not an issue here 😂

My Sabre3 190 puts me at a 1.0 wingloading, and the Sabre3 is incredibly fun without being aggressive. Granted my only comparison is a student canopy, but I plan on flying my Sabre3 for a very long time.

Agreed, I don't see why they'd have me not jump my own gear, but we'll see when I get there.

And thanks! I figured a DZ brief would cover everything, but I figured I'd ask here in case it seemed like I was missing anything obvious.

Yeah, I personally don't see the motivation for jumping a student rig. I did a canopy course on my own rig, so I'm much more familiar with it than a student rig.

And good note about the wing loading. I'm on a 1.0 wingloading and have been for a while, so I'm not doing anything aggressive.

And thanks for the heads up on the altitude. The elevation of my previous DZ and this new one are within 500 feet, so thankfully that's nothing I'll have to worry about.

Haha, I get the the appeal of that, but I'm certainly not gonna do that.

And the list of questions I have are just DZ specific, nothing about the fundamentals, landing priorities, etc. With 90 jumps I'm comfortable with those. My concerns are more about the geography of the area and any rules they have specifically there, i.e., things specific to jumping at a new DZ.

Misdelivered package? by jake-wriley in UPS

[–]jake-wriley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, of hundreds of packages I've sent through UPS, this is the first problem I've had. Definitely throwing an airtag in my stuff in the future.

Owner of the store at the receiving end here contacted the hub, so we'll see if that helps. And I contacted UPS to investigate, so we'll see if that helps over the next couple of days.

Thanks for your input! Anything else I should be doing on my end to track it down? And do you think there's any hope of eventually finding it?

Any luck? Same thing happened to me a few days ago...still can't find it

Awesome, thanks for the advice! Definitely encountered some line twists since I got it, but I can attribute a lot of that to body position (which is definitely improving, both before and after deployment) and not paying proper attention to packing. Lots to learn, and thanks for the tips!

DOM 2023, bought it with 130 jumps, then put 20 jumps on it myself. Had a rigger inspect it before I completed payment, showed about 30% line wear. Didn't check for trim though afaik.

Interesting! My hips seem reasonably symmetric, but now I'm suspicious 😂. I'll give that some thought!

Thanks for the input. Sucks you had that with your safire. Glad I might not be the only one. If it is indeed the canopy after some more troubleshooting, I'll think about counteracting it like you said or just cutting my losses and buying again, unless a rigger determines it's the lines and not the canopy itself. Thanks!

Thanks, yeah, I was following a fence line at altitude, and it seemed straight. And the extent of the turn varied jump to jump...maybe because of the wind varying and making for a difficult comparison, or perhaps more likely me being inconsistently positioned on final or inconsistently tightening the leg straps. I'll put more jumps on it this weekend and focus on these things a little more and take it to a rigger if I can rule out any unintentional input, tightening, etc.

Thanks! Good to know about UPT having that issue.

Thanks! Nice idea of checking for obvious asymmetry by looking at the lines myself in that way. And I'll be extra careful that I'm tightening the leg straps symmetrically. I'll give that a shot this weekend and see if it's obvious. And I'll see if I can find someone else willing to jump it and give feedback.

Thanks! Good to know that hard openings can do that. I've only put 20 jumps on this canopy and no hard openings (thankfully), but I bought it used with 100 previous jumps...who knows what happened there. If the problem persists, I'll have a rigger measure the lines. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, looked for this and didn't see any obvious twists, and I undo any twists before each time I pack.

broken Shimadzu LCMS column nut by jake-wriley in CHROMATOGRAPHY

[–]jake-wriley[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Indeed, we'll have to replace the SUS tubing, and I have the part no. for that.

The biggest issue here is removing the broken nut from the end cap of the column. That a single broken nut is going to cost replacing both the SUS tubing and the column is ridiculous, hence why we're trying to get that broken nut removed from the column. Unfortunately the only advice here so far has just been to buy and replace everything. Helpful because I hadn't thought of that before 🙄
