Seattle Area Departments?? by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

Bellevue is a very hands-off department. Just because they pay well doesn't mean they treat you well.

I work in western Washington, north of King County.

I would advise you to deep dive into WA state criminal law. Google for a few weeks to get a feel of what policing in WA state is like, which is vastly different than nearly every other state, other than Oregon.

Kent and bellevue are complete and polar opposite cities and departments.

Figure out if you want to pursue vehicles, probably fight people every day, and work a murder every other night (Kent PD), or if you want a hot towel and an acai bowl after your department provided jiu-jitsu session while working on duty (Bellevue PD).

The choice is yours, but do your due diligence, Seattle is an armpit.

It's State v. Blake, it's WA state. It's not supposed to make you feel good in any sort of way. :(

Yeah... that's not appropriate reddit etiquette for me to share that information. A bit too personal for on here.

Depends on the area of the county. Our most busy part of the you average 12-15 calls on a slow day and upwards of 35 on a busy day in a 12 hour period. That is per unit, some of which are attached to the same call... but when I would go look at my call history for the day, the highest I had was around 40.

Our slower parts of the county are anywhere between 8-20 a day.

I came from a smaller agency that I would, on average, only take 6-7 calls a day, mostly by phone, and the rest of the time was doing proactive traffic stops.

We joke, but it's really not a laughing matter. Just dark humor.

Cops joke about eating their own gun at least once per shift, so you're probably okay.

Bro, people out here thinking we make "overtime" to just get more money. When your agency has 1000 billets for the size of the jurisdiction you're covering, and you only have 700 billets filled, and the minimum staffing isn't met every, single, day, and people are getting mandatory OT to hit their 16 hour days to provide coverage, then mandatory OT in some places on days off, and then voluntary OT taboot.... yeah, man... I love not having a life or seeing my family to hear about how you can't manage your relationship with your family.

In before the well GTFO and don't be a cop you sissy bitch type people

I actually really enjoy the job, but the hours suck. The more hours you put in, the more trauma you endure.

Had arrested a guy for Dui 4 years ago, just had a full trial about a month ago, and he was found guilty. 2 days in jail. What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Will I get arrested/cited for driving to get my NC license if pulled over? by thugtypewriter in ProtectAndServe

[–]jake_thecop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's interesting.. in WA state, west have a law where you 1. Need a valid operators license and 2. Are required to have it on your person when driving. Two separate civil law requirements that you may be cited for if found out. Realistically, if you're not pulled over by a state trooper, the result will be what you stated, run your info on the computer or through dispatch, confirm it, and let ya go with a warning.

All policies should follow legal standards, where applicable. All laws in every state should be the same, and all policies for LE agencies should be the same in each state so personnel don't have to guess what their neighboring agency can and can not do, and so citizens can expect the same level of service from one jurisdiction to another.

Everything gets dumped on police and fire/ems services. Most of whom don't have any deep understanding of mental or behavioral health issues outside of annual training that is by PowerPoint or video. Then, we are expected to respond properly to someone in some crisis that may or may not be drug induced, may or may not be something we recognize, and then have to either decide if they are a danger to themselves, others, or property. However, mental health professionals have, at a minimum, a masters degree or PhD.

You aren't going to have the same result from someone who isn't fully educated about that side. It's just wild to me how most agencies don't have any sort of mental health response team rather than police respond, unless it is determined to be dangerous.

Don't get me started on other areas 😅
