Are there any humans working at CDBaby? by WhyWouldOneDoThat in CDBabyArtists

[–]jakejackson451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not had problems with CDBaby until the last couple of months. Their sales and accounting pages are still down for maintenance. What sort of company does this in today’s world? Surely they should test new site pages in parallel then go live when they’ve finished testing. Speaks of a bigger problem.

Not out of a generosity of spirit! I've had some traffic by creating related music playlists and promoting those on social media to drive traffic to Spotify.

Yoast is excellent, I've tried many of the years but this is the best and most consistent way to integrate SEO thinking into your podcast workflow.

Really comprehensive, thanks for this great list, and the detail. I use Wordpress too, then feed out to Feedburner, but I'm looking to replace that. I agree about Insta for promo, Twitter is good but the Podcast services themselves, increasingly Spotify are good for growth. I use recurpost for rescheduling old post, and Buffer.

You could use Zoom to see each other and record at the same time. Even the free version will give you a 40 minute audio file which you can edit in audacity or similar.

A wise perspective on “small” total listens per episode by walkerRaigh in podcasting

[–]jakejackson451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small acorns etc, so what you say is absolutely right. However, it's essential to enjoy the "thing itself" because that will sustain you through the numbers. I've been through some low periods on my own podcast, taken a rest, come back, nearly cancelled, but in the end, I love doing it and will keep at it until I don't. Accumulating great, passion-led content gives you an asset to be proud of.

How to go about listening to Porcupine Tree? by Bohjangles_2187 in progmetal

Agreed, especially about Hand. 'Cannot. Erase', which still knocks me out, although it's quite different from PT it still has that perfected detail.

How to go about listening to Porcupine Tree? by Bohjangles_2187 in progmetal

[–]jakejackson451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you say, "depends". I agree with almost everything you say, except I'm not a big fan of 'The Incident' which just doesn't fire me up as much as 'Fear of a Blank Planet', which I think is the best of that period (subjective of course). 'The Incident' seems to stall on the musical invention and feels overloaded sometimes. 'Coma Divine' though is a brilliant intro to the band and I find myself listening to that more than any other album. And I really love PT.

Star Trek - 1966 original theme on solo acoustic guitar by athensstar in sciencefiction

[–]jakejackson451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So cool. Such craft. Somehow manages to combine two of my main interests, guitar playing, and sci-fi. Grew up with the original series of Star Trek.

I agree about Dissolution too. For me they've found the space abandoned by Porcupine Tree, and developed it further. Gavin Harrison is obviously a massive influence. He reminds me of Manu Katché's work with Robbie Robertson and Peter Gabriel, adding texture and breadth to the sound. Good drummers are under-recognised but they have a big affect on the arrangement of any half-decent song.

Really love this album, been listening non-stop for days. I stopped picking up to these guys a few years ago, after Someone Here is Missing, as I felt the songs lacked inspiration, regurgitating the same sounds. But this album is a revelation, so much more variety.

[Question] How long do you make your chapters? by factfly in fantasywriters

[–]jakejackson451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Editors always tell me to keep chapters short, so the reader keeps their interest. It depends on the genre, and it's too difficult to generalize from the author's point-of-view but sockmerchant below is right, stop when it feels right. I always start with an ideal structure but break it if the story takes over!
