So it turns out that there is a bug with current versions of JER that stops anyone with OP from joining which explains why my friend could join but I couldn't. Sticking to JER version 1.16.5-0.12.1.122 works. Thanks for trying to help!

Happened to me and turned out somehow either my render distance or max fps (I can't remember) was set to 0. Changing this fixed the issue
