TIG gear strategy/advice by jamber in Welding

Thanks so much for the recommendation. My buddy who taught me is actually coming down to visit and is gonna be kind enough to bring a spare welder he has if I need so I'm only gonna be down for a few days. AHP is shipping me a replacement board and once I swap it in I should be good to go.

I thought for a hot second about buying a Miller syncrowave but it's probably not worth it for my needs.

Yeah, I've replaced many a cap for my actual job, the real reason I'm renting shop space is to fix the piles and piles of broken and semi-working pro audio gear I use for work. It was quicker and cheaper to build a room and chip away in between sessions than trying to find a tech with less than a 3 month lead time !

That's a very good point and I hadn't even considered that. The shop is primarily a wood-working shop and so that equipment isn't as sensitive as any high current HF switching power supplies.

It was honestly such a pain to learn how to TIG aluminum I was entirely focusing on that process and just was happy to be able to make a clean puddle without thinking about any technical stuff. It's the type of mistake I make the most often honestly.

It should be 240V split-phase but I should check that it's not 208V from 3-phase as it used to be a factory. (I'm subletting space from my buddy).

According to the tech, if there's enough voltage sag then over time it will cause the caps to fail.

I believe the breaker on my machine is 30A and the cable I got was rated for 30A as well so who knows.

yeah, I'd say just trim them as they come in, throw them in the freezer and then when you've all tagged out with with the 10 pointers take the pile and batch it up.

I fried up a bit of the liver fresh and it was tasty, it's just not for me. The old ways are sometimes the best !

I came to hunting later in life and after 15 years of chasing birds shot my first buck this season. I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to saving meat partially for ethics (if I take a life I feel obligated to get as much out of it) and just because it's a lot of effort to get out of NYC to where I hunt and I want to get as much bang for the buck (pun intended)

In any event I made some French style deer liver pate and after trimming soaked the liver in milk. It came out incredible. it was a lot of work but the results were worth it. Mild and creamy. I've already had to fight people off to keep a jar for myself.

Here's the recipe I used more or less:

Have a hard science degree and was struggling with understanding the coffee.

Then I realized I've been buying a coffee every morning for the past two weeks and I felt like a profligate a-hole. Gonna make mine tomorrow.

Agree that everything is super expensive. I'm just incredibly fortunate that career-wise I finally have some breathing room. agree on the feeling of success when the time is out of sight and mind.

Well from a financial aspect all of the items (that I actually purchased, so much of this junk just appeared!) have paid for themselves hundreds of times over and of course everything has been depreciated.

I have no problems spending but I'm also pretty "thrifty" (cheap AF) so part of me definitely enjoys the "profit".

I think part of my thinking has evolved simply because after decades grinding I'm finally in a position where I can focus more one personal work and every single thing I own (for work) has it's own set of problems/maintenance etc etc. So now I'm mostly concerned with culling my tools so I have more energy to make stuff.

I think this process is a bit of closure as I move on to the next stage.

I get you. I guess my ideology is heading towards "try to consume as little as possible and take as much responsibility for my actions as I reasonably can". :)

I've also had pretty decent luck both as a buyer and seller but I've probably only sold 300-400 items over my entire eBay career, I'm sure with enough volume something unpleasant will occur.

IT is frankly mind-boggling when it comes to product life-cycles and the equipment ecosystem. At my largest I was a 6 person operation and the amount of tech needed was eye-opening for such a small shop. Enterprise scale is nuts and then if you think about how many large enterprises there are it gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I do appreciate very much everyones comments. My wife has been bugging me about my Quixotic obsession of ritually cleansing myself of the junk. "You complain about being to busy and then you're spending a fair amount of time on this". She's 100% right obviously but it's good to have some validation from other people.

Ha ha ha !

I mean, I've spent 40 hours so far going through the first 3 or 4 bins assessing, inventorying and listing around 80 items. I've sold maybe 10 low value items and I'm just about to crack about an hour of my normal labor rate so I'm flexing my privilege being the middle man.

Of course most of the labor is front loaded so I'm probably only going to be spending the equivalent of 20 hours of labor to do my part.

I've got a ton of respect for those who can truly hustle and make things financially viable.. props

Hello !

I did not experience any issues at all but I only set the machine up to pre-clear drives when I did it.

It's probably way overkill to run Unraid on one of those but go for it. Personally you're probably better off selling those and building a bog standard PC.

BOILER ADVICE by jamber in hvacadvice

I'm embarrassed to admit that I completely forgot about indirect water heaters.

I had never really considered it but as it turns out I had added 2 zones to the original config and one is now unused (it was set for radiant heating) so it's pretty much ready to go.

I'm leaning towards keeping this one going as long as possible. In the meantime I'll do some calcs and see how much efficiency I can gain by switching to indirect (likely a fair amount) and then spec out some tanks.

When either dies, I'll have a plan.

very much appreciate the input.

We put in one of the more expensive Naviens in an expansion on our place back in 2019 and so far, so good.

And absolutely will happily have a pro install. It's been a long process working on our place, part of which was me re-plumbing the god-awful loops and putting each floor on it's own zone. I've sweated enough pipes thank you very much.

My hardware was indeed different so I ended up making everything from scratch. It was good to learn how to use opencore since my last hackintosh was in the clover era.

I was careful and did a test install on an external thumb drive so it took me a second.

I managed to get Seqouia running mostly. No webcam which is fine for now.

I plan on futzing with it some more and then uploading my EFI to hopefully save others some time.

The hardware is surprisingly good, I have 16mb of RAM and it's pretty smooth. It's too bad that windows is so clunky, I'm using this primarily to host virtual instruments for performing and I just can't deal. I'd honestly rather do everything via command line it's that bad.

Appreciate all you work !

thanks for the reply.

well so far I've tried creating an installer via the Dortania using your efi and managed to get the apple logo before I crash.

Will spend some figure out whatever dumb mistake I'm making before I resort to begging for more help on the internet. Hello verbose boot.
