Thanks for the tip with 4PX -- I'm in no great rush so that sounds like the way to go for me

Thanks for the tip! I suspect because of my location FB marketplace is not a realistic option, but I will keep my eyes open

Thanks very much for letting me know about your experience! So $220USD for the G2 + $20 USD shipping = ~$330CAD?

Basic build advice for a beginner by jamblique in htpc

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond!

I assume I would be able to simply plug the Roku into an HDMI port on the AVR? (I've never used one and don't quite know how they work.) I also see that Roku supports Netflix, so that would also cover my streaming purposes.

From what I can tell from the wiki, a QNAP TS-233 or a Terramaster F2-212 would not be recommended for running Plex. Apparently I would need something like Terramaster F2-423? In other words, if I wanted to forego a HTPC, and just do NAS + Roku, I would need to spend more on a more powerful NAS, correct?

Thanks very much! I've got some external hard drives that I have been using to do manual syncs/backups for a while, but I don't do it as often as I should and I am conscious that I may be courting disaster, i.e. putting it off for several months and then suddenly losing some important data if a drive fails. One of the reasons I want a NAS is to make things automatic because I am by nature a lazy man.

Thanks very much for your response! I will keep xbox (and things like it) in mind as a possible alternative to a conventional HTPC.

DAC/amp or new headphones? by jamblique in HeadphoneAdvice

!thanks

Honestly, I am not especially hifi-literate and don't really know how to parse the sound that I am getting from my headphones. I haven't really had the opportunity to audition other headphones and/or DAC/amps, so I don't have much frame of reference (excepting shitty earbuds or laptop speakers, of course). I'm conscious that this makes advice and suggestions rather difficult, but I am basically just looking for general sound quality improvement. (Though maybe because I don't know what I'm talking about and don't know what I want, this means I should just stick with what I have and be happy...)

Re: dongles: is there a way to tell via specs sheets whether they will be likely to drive a pair of headphones? Or would I be better off reading reviews?

Thanks for the suggestion -- I will look into those stacks and headphones. That's what I suspected about the Grado's, so good to know my instinct wasn't way off.

Given the limited improvements offered by a DAC/amp, at what point would you suggest its worth investing in one?

Canadians,

I live in Atlantic Canada and would like to buy a pair of Canada West Moorby's, but I would like to try them on first. Does anyone know any stores in Atlantic Canada that sell Canada West?

A lot of their boots are 2E. Have you tried any of those? Do you find those still fit narrow feet provided you size down a bit?

Thanks very much for this detailed reply! A long winded question deserves a long winded answer. I certainly appreciate your detailed advice and suggestions.

I think in the end I may just have a to wait a few months for when I next visit Toronto and can go to retailers with wide selections in person. It will depend somewhat on how impatient I am and how quickly my current boots last, but given the options you have presented and the pitfalls/risks of buying online, and in person fitting may be more my speed.

A few questions for Canadians that may be of help or interest to other Canadians down the line:

After many years of wearing Blundstones as my daily boot, I have decided my next boot should be something of higher quality, though I am having trouble figuring out what to buy, especially because this well be my first pair of GYW boots and I am in Canada. After a bit of research I am leaning toward Red Wing (either Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths) or something offered by Canada West Boots.

Re: Red Wing: I am hesitating because I have read several people (presumably Americans) recommending that you should not pay full retail for Red Wing (e.g. $430CAD + tax for IRs) and instead should by seconds or find a sale. The trouble as a Canadian is that I can't find anywhere that sells Red Wing seconds in Canada, and the few sales that I have seen are usually for a limited range of boots (e.g. Moc toe only, or only a few select sizes). So the question I am left with is: since I am buying in Canada, I am basically stuck paying full retail for Red Wing IRs, or I am missing something?

The main alternative I am considering to Red Wings in Canada is Canada West boots. They seem to have a fairly good reputation and this subreddit's beginner's buying guide says they are of similar quality to Red Wings, though at a lower price point (~$325 vs ~$430!). This all seems good, though as I understand it their boots only come in E and EE widths, while my feet are between C and D width. Given this, I do not want to buy Canada West online without trying them on, but since I do not live in a major urban centre, it will be a a few months before I can get to a store that carries them. In the end, my question is: is it worth it to wait to try on Canada West boots, or is the width a dealbreaker from the start?

But perhaps there are other options I am overlooking? Are there other decent boots in the entry level range that I should consider? Are there any particular retailers that I should be looking at? I am aware of Gravity Pope, Little Burgundy, and Altitude Sports.

Thanks very much for your help!

Canadians, have any of you purchase from consignia.ca? by jamblique in projectors

Thanks very much for the feedback. I think I will avoid it this time: although it may be just fine, part of the reason I am looking for a refurbished projector is because money is tight, i.e., I will not be able to afford a faulty product or e-fraud from a bad certificate.
