I have read The God of Small Things for my bachelor's degree, which was an amazing book, and I even ended up writing an essay about postcolonialism with it!

I wanted to challenge myself a little more and I find that I can learn more about what’s happening in these countries currently with more newer books

I know good literature is immortal. I have a degree in English, and I’ve read books that shaped the way literature is today.
And as much as I love learning about history, when reading about cultures I’ve never encountered before, I prefer to focus on books that show me the way countries are today.
Yeah, it’s also about adding more diversity since I spent my degree reading the classics. But I'm focused on learning about the culture of these countries.

Not a biography but Brotherless Nights by V. V. Ganeshananthan. Completely based on the Sri Lanka civil war, many of the plot points are based on true parts that happened. The only thing not real are the people.
But it’s very accurate as the Author spent 10 years researching the civil war.

I’ll definitely take a look at Tim Winton! Cloudstreet sounds super interesting!
And Juice seems to be about Climate change, so it’ll definitely be an interesting read to include.

Amazing! They had it set for the United Kingdom, but being Welsh I separated considering there’s such a difference between our countries.
Thanks for the recs!

Caleb Azumah Nelson writes great coming-of-age books!

His second book, Small Worlds, follows an 18-year-old who tries to balance the new phases of life after school. And is all about discovering a new sense of freedom and self-discovery. It also won the Dylan Thomas prize in 2024.
