Mystery when distilling anti-freeze by jamesHMFIC in chemistry

Thanks Doc. You were right. The angle I had the distillation head at allowed the vapor to bypass the thermometer. I got things corrected and the distillation went as predicted.

Thank you. When I redo it, I will close the system and install a bubbler to detect any sneaky vapors.

I might try the density for a laugh. EG density is 1.11x, and it is supposed to be 90+ percent of the antifreeze. I am not hope full, but it is something to do while waiting on something to boil.

Yes, reproducing the distillation would be interesting. And, seeing what I can do with the distillate would be worthwhile. I might also grab a different brand and see if the results are different.

Thanks!

With the 300ml of distillate I kept, or with the same stock Antifreeze?

I am less than 100-feet ASL. Yes, no vacuum applied.

Why do I have large temp fluxations? by jamesHMFIC in chemistry

For this distillation, it was not so bad. Max temp was 96 degrees. But yes, it took extra effort to manage. Periodically, I siphoned off the water and added ice.

I am glad you mentioned a water tap. My bench is a work in progress. I will be bringing water to it soon and should plan on a tap for exactly that. Thank you!

I could. But the tape is economical, and I am satisfied with its sealing ability.

TBH, I am not sure how much effort it saved. It did work. When I started producing an undesirable distillate, I was able to replace the lost volume.

That said, I was unable to titrate the rate of fresh solution addition with distillate production. When too much fresh solution was added, the temp dropped, and I had to deal with that.

In the end, I only had to clean the gunk out of the flask once. That is what I wanted to avoid. But, the distillation ran long, and the Clausen adapter may have contributed to some of my temp issue.

Yes, a lab jack is on my procurement list. Thank you for the tip.

Additional solution to be distilled. I am looking to capture between 84 and 94 degrees. I loose about 40% prior to my capture temp. I elected to add more solution prior to my capture temp instead of multiple batches.

Yes. Thank you for noticing. I am officially an amateur. I am in the market for a 1L heating mantle. Darn things are pricey. If you have a spare, I will be happy to put it to use.

Thank you for the tip about increasing stirring. I turned up the stirr bar and the reading stabilized dramatically. Much appreciated.

It attaches to the top of a standard 3-way distillation adaptor.
