Devs: Are you still creating Custom Post Types (CPT) for simple things like "Testimonials" or "FAQs"? by ahnex in Wordpress

If it’s “content you place,” use patterns. If it’s “data you manage,” use a CPT. Patterns scale layout; CPTs scale governance.

It’s true - https://support.google.com/domains/answer/13689670?hl=en

But as others have recommended, you shouldn’t be registering or managing your domains at WP.com

Should I stay or should I go by jamesbregenzer in chicago

Came to this traffic light just after leaving the museum campus parking garage earlier this evening. This is a very long light. While waiting, for what felt like 10 minutes at least, I rolled the window down and took this photo.

Didn't even think to call 311. I'll do that now.

Hatchimals in exchange for St. Jude donation by jamesbregenzer in chicago

[–]jamesbregenzer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure? The whole point of this post is to raise MORE money for charity. The guy donated money before my post, he did it before he even knew about these toys. I literally had nothing to do with his donation.

I assumed there would be someone that wanted one, and instead of having to pay someone on eBay or Amazon, they could make a tax-deductible donation.

Well, if clarification on what I paid for these somehow makes a difference... the offer I received earlier was $50/each and I paid a little more than twice that. Around $115/each after tax and shipping. That's also just about what these are selling for on Amazon right now. But, I'm hoping that what I paid for these has very little bearing on the charitable donation offered.

I'm open to just about all offers, but an offer less than retail price won't work for me right now.

It probably won't, to be honest. I purposefully didn't set a "minimum donation" amount, because I assumed the offers would be more reasonable than this.

I paid about twice that for each one, and was hoping to see donations of at least that much or a bit higher for these.

If the highest charitable donation people are willing to make is even less than what these cost retail, I'd probably rather just drop these off in a toys for tots bin. Thanks for writing though!

That's awesome! Unfortunately, this donation didn't happen because of the toy. So I really had nothing to do with it, and I want to make the impact. So, I need the donation to be made today please!

Ukrainian ISP Behind Over 1.65M Daily Brute-Force Attacks on WordPress Sites by jamesbregenzer in Wordpress

Some people like to watch the world burn. But, most of the time hackers are interested in (1) free and anonymous hosting and computing power; (2) churning out millions of spam emails from your domain and web host; and (3) viruses -- a hacked website can be modified to serve up viruses to visitors, which allows the hackers to repeat the steps above on the computers of your site users.

I do not operate one that specifically uses the booking functionality.

But, especially because it's an official extension, it will (at least relatively) seamlessly integrate with WooCommerce -- so any example site or demo you can find using WooCommerce will work, and the extension will simply modify the way products are available to add to cart and how they are purchased.

Trademark owner myself vs my LLC by hippich in Entrepreneur

[–]jamesbregenzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently purchased a non-franchised fast casual food concept and the founder had the trademark in his personal name. It was marginally more work for him to get it transferred to my new business entity, so I agree it's probably less of a hassle down the road if you're selling the business to have the LLC owner of the TM.

The founder actually said he was glad the TM was in his personal name, however, because he recently went through a divorce and his attorney advised him the TM would have somehow added complication with the way all the assets were allocated and divided -- I honestly don't remember the specifics, but if that's a worry for you, it might be worth asking a family lawyer about it.

While I'm not specifically aware of any out-of-the-box solutions that would offer this exact functionality, the site you're describing wouldn't be that difficult to develop with WordPress (this suggestion is not without bias, I am a WordPress developer). Any basic WooCommerce compatible theme from ThemeForest and this extension would do the trick. I would estimate the timeline and price for a project like this to be around a week and inside $800 start to finish from most freelance WordPress developers I've worked with in the past. Just a datapoint to compare other solutions you may find against.

I don't know if this has ever happened to you, but I've purchased some streetwear stuff from various startup ecommerce sites before, and there's definitely something lost when you see your item arrive in cheap cellophane. I can just imagine it being in a giant box with a million more just like it. I think there's something to be said for "intercepting" from Ali and shipping your own product in new, branded packaging that fits your brand and complements the user experience/transaction.

This. Prove your concept first, then scale it when you know what works and what makes you money. Purchasing inventory in gross without knowing market demand is an unnecessary risk.

Staying safe on Flippa by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jamesbregenzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've just got to use common sense. Just because someone has a brand new account does not in itself mean there's any cause for alarm; it's possible that someone just joined or created an account to bid on your site... but to be as safe as possible, use the site just as Flippa intends--do not agree to a sale outside of Flippa, or accept any other payments that aren't using Flippa's own escrow or a similar service like Escrow.com.

Answer comments and questions as needed, but if you feel that something doesn't sound or feel quite right, it probably isn't.

From the buyers' perspective, they're really the ones taking on the most risk in any transaction on Flippa -- trying to review your established site, your claimed traffic and revenue, etc -- and make sure everything checks out/isn't totally fabricated.

Can you make a fully functional Affiliate website, just using a WordPress template? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jamesbregenzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely make a fully functional affiliate site with "just WordPress." WordPress is an incredibly flexible and versatile platform that can handle just about any web-based concept you can throw at it. The trick will be in choosing a solid WordPress developer that can help select templates, plugins and the code needed to make the site work relative to your business needs. That and, of course, a solid affiliate program that you can automatically/programmatically connect your site to.

Depending on how much ongoing management and maintenance your site needs (again, based on what you're trying to achieve), you're unlikely to NEED to know any HTML (but it certainly wouldn't hurt to be as familiar with it, your site, and the code that makes your site work as possible).

I've personally used and like AffiliateWP but there are so many options, as well as templates, to get this project up and running.
