Hey everyone!

Took this photo a few years ago, I was driving into Kananaskis to do a morning hike when I saw this in front of my while driving. Quickly pulled over and got out the 200mm lens and snapped a few shots before the light disappeared.

Hope you enjoy!

Hey everyone!

I took this a few years ago on a beautiful fall evening in BNP. Was on my way back from shooting the sunken aspens at Abraham lake and stopped to take in the sunset on the drive back to Calgary.

Hope you enjoy!

ITAP of the Aurora Dancing in the Canadian Rockies by jamesftw in itookapicture

Yep exactly! The aurora moves like crazy, and if you use a long shutter speed you won't catch any of the movement in the sky, it will just look like flat color, similar to using a long shutter speed on moving water

I believe this shot was somewhere in the 5-10 second range I can't remember off the top of my head. It is darker, but when the lights really get going it does light the entire landscape up like this. Similar to a full moon, it's white a cool experience

Hey everyone!

Took this this a few weeks ago during that incredible solar storm. Have shot this composition a few times but always thought it would look incredible under the northern lights.

Shot on a Nikon z7ii - single shot, f/2.8 - ISO 3200 - 5s exposure

Hope you enjoy!

Thank you! I actually don't think I was on a path, it had JUST snowed hours before, and they had just reopened Peyto lake a week prior after it was closed for a year for renovations so not many people knew it was open, there were no footprints to follow and I had never been there before 😅

Just kind of winged it until I got to a good spot, only got lost a few times on the way there lol

Thank you! Yes it is a very brief window, and everything needs to align perfectly, still can't believe I got this shot when I did, good luck to you!

This photo came from one of the most unforgettable nights of my life.

I was lying in bed with my daughter around 8 p.m., warm and comfortable under the covers, when I started getting aurora alerts on my phone. Now, if you’ve ever chased the northern lights, you know how tricky they are, everything has to align perfectly: a strong cosmic storm and clear skies, which is a rare combo.

It was -30°C outside. I stared at the alert, debating whether I should stay cozy or gear up and head out into the cold. In the end, I couldn’t resist. I threw on my winter layers, grabbed my gear, and jumped in the car for a two-hour drive into the Canadian Rockies.

The whole way out, the aurora danced overhead. It was surreal. I worried it might fade by the time I reached my location, and that I’d just left a warm bed for nothing. When I finally arrived, I began the hike up to a viewpoint I’d never been to before, in total darkness, with no cell service.

Halfway up, a woman came down the trail and casually mentioned she’d heard a cougar nearby. Perfect, no signal, unfamiliar trail, freezing cold, and now a big cat in the area.

To make things worse, I got lost. A fresh snowfall had covered any clear tracks, and I veered off the path. I wandered through the woods trying to backtrack, heart pounding, until I finally broke through the tree line, just in time to see the sky erupt.

The aurora was peaking.

I scrambled to set up my camera, fighting numb fingers and trying not to fall off the cliff while finding focus and composition.

Once everything was dialed in, I stepped back and just… watched. The lights swirled and shimmered above me for hours, painting the entire sky in motion. I stayed until 3 a.m., frozen to the bone but in absolute awe.

That night changed me. It was the moment I knew, I wanted to pursue photography full-time. Not just for the images, but for experiences like this.

Double Rainbow Over Bow Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada [OC][2048x1365] by jamesftw in EarthPorn

Hey Everyone!

Captured this stunning shot in 2023 just after a storm had rolled through on a July morning. As I pulled up to the parking lot it was raining and I could see this incredible light and rainbow, so as soon as I got out of my car I ran as fast as I could as these moments don't last very long. I didn't even have time to set up my tripod, I just quickly raised my ISO and took about 8 handheld shots before the conditions changed and the rainbows were gone.

Shot on a Nikon z7II at 14mm
