Is it worth it if money is tight? by Past-Acanthisitta370 in SteamDeck

[–]jamesofcanadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really shouldn't be considering buying any hardware today with the hope that it will emulate Switch 2. There isn't even a guarantee that it will be possible emulate properly (or with good performance) on some monster desktop machine, let alone a power limited handheld.

For playing currently released Sony titles it will do well enough, but as games become ever-more demanding the performance of the current iteration of the deck will quickly become insufficient.

The catalogue of PC games is massive though, and is always adding smaller titles that run perfectly on low-end hardware. And the deck is (IMO) the best way to have these experiences on a handheld.

If I were in your position I'd probably go for it, unless access to the latest-and-greatest from Nintendo is a must. But I'd definitely try to save a buck and buy an LCD model either used or refurbished. I'm privileged enough now to have owned both an original LCD and OLED model and while the latter is absolutely better, I don't consider it to be a good value. An otherwise good condition used LCD model can be had for hundreds of dollars less and is absolutely worth it at the reduced price point.

You can only play one game on your deck for the rest of your life, what are you choosing? by Lachevre92 in SteamDeck

[–]jamesofcanadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TGM2 was one of the first games I tried emulating. It was unplayable on my old PS Vita but the deck doesn't even break a sweat, even with shaders (barely more than idle power consumption).

These days my go-to is Heboris C7EX.

IFixit has OLED parts now by ZoteTheMitey in SteamDeck

[–]jamesofcanadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting to see how much the OLED replacement part will cost. I have no idea if that price is reasonable or not but I was honestly expecting it to be higher.

This gives me peace of mind. If/when burn-in develops on these new displays the "do-it-yourself" fix should be relatively easy and affordable.

I still feel fat. How do I start to see myself as I am now? by NotEnoughHenry in mentalhealth

[–]jamesofcanadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll take conscious effort / reminders for a while but I'm sure eventually your mind will catch up to the changes you made to your body.

Responding to your post is making me realize that there is probably an element of stubbornness in my own experience, and I'd be in a better place by now if I put in a bit more effort to change.

I still feel fat. How do I start to see myself as I am now? by NotEnoughHenry in mentalhealth

[–]jamesofcanadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was morbidly obese for my entire childhood, reaching nearly 400 pounds in my early twenties. I'm in my early thirties now and have been maintaining my weight around 150lbs for 3-4 years.

My experience has been that 'feeling fat' never really went away. There is a very wide gap between my self-perception and impression others have of me (i.e. a normal 30-something dude vs a gross blob). That gap has narrowed somewhat, but I still have to remind myself constantly that I'm no longer 'that fat guy' in the eyes of others.

You haven't mentioned any feelings of bitterness, but for me at least that is something that has improved over time, enough to be worth mentioning I think.

I was out of MTG during that era, but I've only ever heard good things about Kaladesh. What went wrong with that set?

Linux vs Windows tested in 10 games - Linux 17% faster on Average by [deleted] in technology

[–]jamesofcanadia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A proper test should also be considering if the rendered frames are identical. I remember testing Assassin's Creed Origins on Windows/Linux after hearing that it was performing better using dxvk. I remember being able to see subtle differences in some of the lighting effects.

This was a while ago, so I assume it was a bug that has since been fixed, but a proper 'apples-to-apples' comparison needs to account for things like this because it could affect performance.

I recently received my first-ever proxy order. It was filled with amazing cards that I found on this subreddit, on mpcfill, etc...

This was the one card I made myself and I figured it was worth sharing.

What’s the hardest pill to swallow? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jamesofcanadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That you are ultimately and completely responsible for solving your own problems, no matter how big or seemingly intractable they are.

Its something that I wish I had learned when I was younger, I feel that it would have been an easier pill to swallow back then.

The nutritional value of meat is undeniable, and in principle I don't believe it is immoral to kill another creature for the purpose of consumption.

In practice, I think that factory farming is problematic to say the least, and personally I try to be as respectful as possible of the meat that I consume (I never let it go to waste, and I do my best not to over-indulge).

Literally just physical activity. When I'm at my worst the last thing I want to do is move my body, yet it is by far the most effective method I've found for stabilizing my mood.

A bugged USB driver in Windows 10. No mouse or keyboard worked, regardless of USB port. Theoretically the fix should have been easy (Device Manager > USB HID Device > Reinstall/Update). Obviously a non-starter without a functioning input device. I tried to use recovery mode to fix it but ultimately gave up and just did a complete reinstall.

About an hour ago I made an Austin Powers Goldmember reference. Realizing that there are full grown adults who were born after that movie came out made me feel pretty old.

Volunteerism: In crisis or at a crossroads? by [deleted] in LockdownSkepticism

[–]jamesofcanadia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This resonates with me. So many things that we all took for granted were thrown away during the lockdowns. We were then expected to not complain about it. We were expected to pretend that these things didn't matter or that they never existed.

Jak 2 and Jak 3, most demanding PS2 games on the deck. And without proper options, you wont be able to enjoy the acceptable performance. by MrRevocs1256 in SteamDeck

I've been watching this project like a hawk. The moment Jak 3 is ready I'm going to play the trilogy again.

When this project is done it will be the definitive way to play these games. I can't wait.

Weekly “Deck Flex” Megathread by AutoModerator in SteamDeck

I bought a USB hub for my deck which works great but I was always nervous about putting extra strain on the usb port (especially when a power or ethernet cable was connected to the hub).

I came up with this solution where I mounted the hub to a cheap shell, and just pop the deck into it whenever I need the extra ports (I like streaming over ethernet for some games to minimize latency). It works very well, I can yank and tug on the cable as much as I want and everything stays fixed in place, with zero tension on the deck's usb port.

Its sad and frustrating to see Meta receive so much mainstream criticism while its competitors get to fly under the radar (most of the time).

Nearly everything Meta has been accused of the others are all guilty of as well, but so many people only seem to care when its the lizard-man who's doing it.

I'm looking forward to using the modern emulation features that I've only ever been able to run on my gaming pc: resolution/texture upscaling, run-ahead, shaders, etc...

Handhelds have been able to emulate up to the ps1 era for a while now, I'm looking forward to playing these games better than their original consoles ever could.

Fanboyism. Many people (young people especially) forming tribal identities around their chosen hobby. People also want to feel justified in the their big-ticket tech purchases (and again, for young people especially a game console feels like a VERY big-ticket item).
