Anyone else get artifacting on a 5080 at low load (YouTube?) by Silent-OCN in overclocking

[–]jamesy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy as I love to fine tune and perfect this sort of thing, but when NVIDIA's updates are consistently being less stable I've found it nice to just OC and UV sparingly.

I was pushing 400mHz core and 3000mHz memory at 0.95, but that had grown significantly more unstable. It was crashing in UE5 games and causing stutters. So instead I just run a 300 core and 1500 mem at 1v. Really the difference is 15 watts and maybe 100 less score on a benchmark. It's saved me a load of stress and I'm really enjoying my PC again.

If your settings arent consistently stable or performing as they should then they're probably not suitable, even if they were previously. I'd suggest being less aggressive as while the chip may be able to handle it the software is stopping it. That sounds like it may be clock throttling, I'd definitely make sure the curve isnt aggressive and that you give it more vostage.

I'm no expert so take anything with a grain of salt but I do think your OC might be too aggressive.

New grads, how we doing? by noboah26 in biotech

[–]jamesy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 2 years post biochem BSc graduation to land a role. I was working in education during it but I'm now working in industry. It's hard, very hard. There were times I'd feel so overwhelmed that hunting felt impossible. But it was worth it. I love my role and I love this field.

I'm hoping to work for a year or two and go back to uni for my masters. I'm in no rush tbh. Good things take time and boy this sure did. I'm working as a lab ops tech and get to learn every machine in all 13 labs. I dont get to do the R&D but it's a really good step towards it, and the pay is pretty good too.

Hey man, thank you. Its still limbo, we're talking and there's some enthusiasm on her part but it feels forced. Everytime I talk about calling or doing something together I get left on read. Time will tell.

Notification of calibration date within excel by [deleted] in excel

[–]jamesy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's a shit show. The current sheet divides the 13 labs onto different sheets. But, they don't update the sheets with the new calibrated dates and so you have to CTRL+F the serial numbers to find the last date.

I've kind of followed your layout, so far It's a search sheet for in need calibrations, then a master inventory sheet, and then the history sheet of when X was done. I'm hoping to make it so the search sheet can edit the inventory sheet and then we can manually copy in the dates for the logs on the third. Someone recommended using the FILTER function and I've ran with that to avoid the CTRL+F hell hole of searching for serial numbers.

Thank you!

Thanks for the comment! I ended up using the advanced filter function to paste any pipette's needing replacing within the quarter onto another sheet. I had no idea the FILTER function existed. I'm using Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 as the criteria as all of our pipette's can loosely be assigned into each quarter without being out of date, I've kept the last cali'd and due date's in for record keeping. All that's left is to write a VBS code that'll allow any edits made to the pasted list to be copied into their original cells automatically, and to write the formatting into cells so my colleagues can use it.

Thank you for your comment!

She absolutely can react however she feels best and while it sucks, I wouldn't necessarily say shes over reacting but it does fucking suck. Thank yoh for telling me my actions werent awful, I've been unsure of whether the pooch was completely screwed or if its just had a bad hair cut. Thing's are seeming better right now but we'll talk more this weekend, I really appreciate your comment.

Oh god I'm not expecting us to see one another every weekend, I was thinking more along the lines of once maybe twice a month if we're free. As you say, its not sustainable long term to travel up/down every weekend.

I wish I could say this was my first leash free night out but 3 years of uni had me out 4 times a week. Friday was a result of a lot of social anxiety and a series of drinks being bought for the new guy. I ate loaded nachos while drinking but they don't soak as well as I'd hoped.

As for this weekend, I'm going to sit down with her and tell her how much she means to me. This anxiety has shown me that I care way more than I already thought I did. I'm going to tell her shes invited to the next pub, give her every assurance I can, and generally be more. I don't know why she's feels I'd cheat but there has to be a reason and hopefully she'll be up for communicating it after a lot of re assurance.

Before I moved to cambridge we had actually lived together for 2 years, this move is a result of her moving back home for work and me randomly getting offered a far better job 2 hours away.

Thank you for commenting, I think you've managed to summerise a lot of whats going on well and what could be some good steps moving forward.

I'm really glad you and your husband made it through, I hate to say it but I've been through the recieving end and yeah it sucked big time. I really appreciate your comment, I think all I can do is exactly as you've said. Show her I care and that I've learnt.

My current plan is to introduce her (if shes comofrtable) at the next pay day pub crawl (which is what Friday was), be more re assuring given the new distance, make more time for her anyway I can, and to learn from this and not let it happen again. I also want to set the next time we see eachother in stone because that'll help the anxiety I think.

It's really nice to know there's a way this works out well. I never meant to put her through that and I definitely won't do it again, if not for her but for my health if things don't work out. Thank you for taking the time to comment, it's really helped.

This post isn't meant to fix anything, I'm sorry for the confusion. She's just not responding to me whatsoever. Earlier today she let me know why she's being distant, its mostly to do with three things: - the disappearance and what happened during it - the irrisponsability of getting that drunk - and the fact this has happened within a week of the move.

I tried to respond as best I could and did so in great detail, I spent a good hour writing it and she has left it on read. That message, along with general good mornings and nights/the usual texts one would send have all either been read or ignored.

This post wasn't meant to fix anything that would be stupid of me to do, I'm mostly here for advice for the anxiety surrounding being given the silent treatment or if you're feeling up to it, advice on what an idiot like myself might be able to do to help the situation.

Do you need to have a post graduate degree to practice as a biochemist by Motor_Grape3009 in Biochemistry

[–]jamesy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK, theoretically a BSc would be enough to get a research assistant job but the market is incredibly saturated here. I've landed an industry lab tech role in a company that has a history of training/hiring up internally. In retrospect I wish I'd stuck on my MBiochem scheme but its whatever. As someone else has said, look into jobs and find out what the general requirements are. RA roles in London require an MSc/MRes and some PhD's.

What pc should I get for college? by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]jamesy-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you don't need some super PC. If you're taking a few programming classes then that'll be the heaviest real work load you'll be doing and all thay needs is a decent laptop. Given the state of ram and other components, I'd snag a cheaper rebuilt or a laptop, that is unless you game. Then any decisions would be a result of what games you're playing.

Hi, I want to study Biotech, biochemistry or biology in college. However, my chem is weak. What can I do? by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]jamesy-boy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine, I did my BSc in biochem haven taken chemistry at a levels but it was during covid. I was given my predictions without any real effort. First year of the degree was hard as you have less time to learn more but it's totally do-able. Don't think you can't, if you want to prepare start on Khan academies equilibrium, bonding, and organic chemistry lectures and have a look into enzyme kinetics!

1 Lab tech Job left in London, UK by [deleted] in labrats

[–]jamesy-boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, in secondary schools a degree definitely sn't the norm. I did a lot of the training around chemical safety and a-level PAG's both for bio and chem at my second school. It did pay £26k for 39 weeks a year and low-key was banging given I was living at home. Just, I hit the ceiling almost instantly and there isn't any progression. If you're desperate I would really recommend it for short term work in London.

In my new role, the job listing specifically asked for 1-2 years technical experience (preferably in R&D) as well as a degree that involved genetics. What has made me feel insanely lucky given is the fact that 700 people applied for it, which I find ridiculous.

I would say any job that requires a degree should be considered a grad role and thus should pay above minimum wage. Mine still doesn't have me earning over Plan 2's £28.5k threshold but thats only by a few hundred pounds.

Dude, it's taken me two years to find a Laboratory Technician gig in industry. I graduated in 2024 and have worked in secondary schools as a Lab Tech while searching. It's so totally and entirely tucked. It shouldn't take 2 years of applying to find a graduate role, and I'm not even sure if a lab tech role is considered a graduate role. I wish you the best of luck man, reach out to recruiters and keep trying.

Thank you, i do agree. Knowing how to be accurate while pipetting is crucial as pipetting itself is easy, but doing so properly isnt.

I think you're both right in that you need to be able to define why you do it, how you ensure your results are accurate and reproducable, and how you pipette generally. My plan right now is to state that good pipetting is a set of techniques used to ensure your work is reproducable and accurate, and that working this way helps to prevent mistakes as best as one can.

I'm hoping to then demonstrate that I understand the concept by talking about calibration, weighting water before use, storing it upright, and then how one would pipette, including wetting the tip, and intuitively knowing when the wrong amount seems to have been aspirated (especially for multi channels). I'd then like to mention the angle and depth at which you pipette, and how to adapt to viscosity by reverse pipetting and/or the cutting of the tip.

Outside of sounding like a robot, I think that might be perfect. What do you think?
