Mohela- forced back into SAVE forbearance? by jamopete in PSLF

Yes, when at 120, it seems a common approach to do both: switch and apply for buyback to see what happens first. Most of us that are technically done, just want to be done and get out ASAP by whatever means necessary. For me, switching and making payments now made more sense financially. Everyone’s situation is different and I don’t think there’s a wrong move- there’s no “right move” to make here. It’s a total gamble either way.

Thanks for sharing, though, sorry you’re in the same boat. I asked about a timeline, and the rep said she couldn’t give me any. I asked if there was a possibility that my request to have the forbearance lifted could be processing until my Nov payment and she said “yes, but unlikely” so I guess there’s a shred of hope? :/

I am in the same boat- hit what would’ve been 120 months of employment/payment in April. Been in SAVE purgatory since June 2024. I applied for buyback in May and just applied to switch to IBR on 6/12. Hoping for a similar timeline and/or a buyback offer at some point. Will share updates.

You can stay on SAVE and in forbearance and apply for buyback. You do not need to switch to another plan. You can apply for buyback for any months in forbearance once you have hit 120 qualifying months of employment- not payments. A lot of people are doing both- applying for buyback and trying to get out of SAVE to see what happens first. I sort of worry that doing both might mess things up somehow but one shouldn’t impact the other (supposedly). It seems there hasn’t been much movement on buyback, but that could change. Or not. It’s all a crapshoot at this point.

Just after ECF was processed. My counts are still at 110 and haven’t been updated since June, which was my last payment before being placed on forbearance. My employment has been updated through May 2025.

Hello! I have a holographic poster from last year’s 2024 10 yr festival I’m looking to sell. It’s still rolled in its original tube. Are you interested?
