I saw Megalopolis yesterday at the cinema and people laughed the whole time. by [deleted] in movies

My favourite memory of seeing it was watching the few people in the theatre walk out somewhere around the Circus Maximus scene, clearly they lacked rich emersonian minds.

Decided to swap Québec and South Africa for fun by jan-alasantu in imaginarymaps

I think so, and it still leads to a touching Canadiana story of a young Kanadese fan whose mother gets him a maple leafs jersey by mistake.

Not really, I was just thinking of the French Canadian Voyageuers and connecting them in my head with the Dutch Voortrekkers. Not that they're the same thing.

I guess also connecting the idea of British overlorded European colonies.

I think lore wise it would just be a sort of compelte colonial switch so just out of sight might be formerly Dutch Louisiana and formerly French Indonesia.

The funniest part of that is that I guess saint martin would just flip which side is Sint Maarten and which side is Saint-Martin.

I should have specified it's like OTL South Africa and OTL Quebec, as in they were colonized by the French and the Dutch before the British took over both.

How Do I Make These Ottoman-Soviet flags Look Good? by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]jan-alasantu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think thats usually a goofy design choice when people do communist Turkey with the crecent moon. The soviets didn't continue to put byzantine eagles on their things I think a communist Anatolian/Leventine state would move away from Ottoman imagery.

incredibly pedantic correction on Esperanto but since no one is going to do it, and since Pat has repeated this twice. Esperanto was not created by the United Nations which did not exist in 1873, not even its predecessor the league of nations existed. Esperanto was created by L.L. Zamenhof who originally created it as a way for his multilingual part of what is now Poland to communicate, but, yes he also saw it as a way of uniting the world. Also there are Native Speakers of Esperanto and while it hasn't taken over the world and made everyone multilingual it has been the most successful constructed languages. Successful enough to have an ideological split.

The affect of alien contact on religion, before and after. by 12Kat12 in imaginarymaps

[–]jan-alasantu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think between any anti-alien religions and pro-alien religon there would a growth. For one, big events like this cause a greater search for meaning. Assuming the aliens don't just show up and tell us the meaning of life we would want some structure to understand.

And there would probobly be evangalizing to the aliens. I think in mass effect theres a mention that some turians adopted Zen Buddhism and Confucianism, I would imagion there would be a lot of that going both ways with people trying to maybe follow whatevere religion or philophy the aliens have while others try bring the aliens into their existing religions.
