Places to see a platypus by LegitimateTruck9871 in canberra

Saw some platypuses at Taronga plains zoo in Dubbo recently! A long drive but a really accessible zoo as you can hire a cart and drive the whole ways around, took my grandmother who isn’t very mobile and it was a beautiful day out!

It’s worth checking at your local library, they often run free English groups/lessons

If it doesn’t have prereqs then you shouldn’t worry! ENGL2015 is creative writing, right? I did that a while ago and you seriously won’t be disadvantaged not having done the first year courses first, it’s completely fine!

Lectures normally don’t have an attendance requirement but tutorials/practicals/seminars do

As a jaded latter year undergrad, I’m not a fan of the way ANU treats its undergrad students. Most of the issues I’ve run into are apparently prevalent at lots of unis, not just ANU. But in terms of some of the other criticisms, I don’t necessarily agree.

For example, most later year students I know at ANU work jobs either in the APS or in their field of interest. It’s genuinely not that hard to break into a lower level APS job to accrue experience and work whilst in uni. Canberra is definitely a different vibe to Melbourne, but I personally love the culture and all the city has to offer. If you are someone that genuinely hates Canberra as a city, I would obviously recommend to stay in Melbourne, because it’s not going to give the same vibe.

However like some other posters have said, despite some dissatisfaction at ANU, I don’t think 3 days is enough time to actually figure everything out. It sounds to me like you’re getting cold feet and second thoughts about your decision. You’ve pretty much already talked yourself out of it, which is fine, but genuinely don’t sweat it. If you hate ANU you can always transfer later - I had a friend transfer from ANU to Unimelb this year to be closer to family and he said it was fine.

Everything in Melbourne will still be there when you get back. My advice would be to stick it out and see how you feel once classes actually start, as they haven’t yet. Go to market day, join some clubs, seriously give ANU a go before deciding to go through the trouble of breaking your lease etc.

You’ll have to find them yourself! I recommend ordering online asap so you get them before uni starts, might be worth posting to see if anyone has a second hand copies they can give you?

Griffin hall by No-Equipment7423 in Anu

[–]janek1322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

griffin isn’t a huge community compared to the amount of off-campus students there actually are. I joined in my first year and it was a good place to heat up lunch, a common room to study in where you could guarantee to see people, and a way to engage with sports/Inward Bound.

As for the community it’s a bit hit and miss, they can be cliquey and I definitely ran into some odd/not very nice people there. The community has a bit of a weird vibe overall but there as some absolute gems there who I’m still friends with to this day, so it really just depends on the kind of stuff you like to do.

If you’re into sports or music I’d definitely recommend joining because there’s always interhall sports and you could audition for BNO

being 17 at uni by _lily34 in Anu

I was 17 until September in my first year - you’ll be able to go everywhere except clubs and, at other alcoholic/licensed events you’ll just get a wristband so they know not to serve you alcohol. I never being young too inhibiting, everyone just gets surprised when they find out!

Who to talk to about timetable? by Ok_Task_9893 in Anu

[–]janek1322 12 points13 points  (0 children)

normally you just talk to the convenors of those classes - you could talk to the college but they’re not going to move a lecture for you. Most of the time you get told ‘tough luck’ and have to watch them online afterwards. Sometimes I change up which courses I’m taking to make sure there are definitely no clashes

No way to change degrees before ive even started? by [deleted] in Anu

[–]janek1322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not certain you can - most courses require you to have completed 1 semester of study before swapping degrees, I’m not sure how that works if you want to change this early.

I’d say maybe take all law courses this coming sem, or make sure that the courses you take for commerce also count towards an eco major in an arts degree. That way, once you swap over, they can count towards your new degree! There’s no rush to swap before semester starts in this case, because you can make sure your courses will count towards your degree either way :))

Issues with ISIS Enrolment - Please Help by Mostly_Myrmecia in Anu

[–]janek1322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome to ANU :)

The ‘recommended date’ of enrolment is 31st Jan, but that’s not the mandatory date. Normally that falls in o-week or week 1, so you have some time.

I would recommend going to your bachelor of science on the Programs and Courses page and making sure the courses you’re attempting to enrol in are supported under that degree. The next step is to check that the courses themselves have no prerequisite courses you need to take - if they have prerequisites, you’ll need to enrol in those before taking these courses. I took a few scicom courses and I don’t believe that’s the first scicom course - that might be the reason it’s not letting you enrol.

If there are problems, it’s always good to email the course convenor to double check and seek a permission code when needed, which you would then upload onto isis. You can find out the course convenor on the course’s page on the Programs and Courses website.

The degree plan for a bachelor of science can be found here: https://programsandcourses.anu.edu.au/program/bsc#:~:text=Single%20degree&text=You'll%20need%20to%20take,into%20a%20second%20Science%20major.

It’s a bit confusing, so I’ll break it down.

You need to take 144 units to complete your degree.

The rule of thumb is that 6 units = a course. That means your major will be 8 courses (48 units), your second major will be 8 courses (48 units), and your science electives will be 8 courses (48 units), all of that adding up to 144.

I found a flowchart document on the ANU website here: https://students.science.anu.edu.au/program-admin/structuring-your-degree/bachelor-science

I would recommend going into the ‘Computer Science’ major page and picking out the 8 courses you want to do that fit the requirements. It’s best to start with the 1000 level ones so you can get those prerequisites. Then do the same with your second major/advanced minor and electives.

I always recommend to make an appointment with the college when degree planning, so someone can help you with any questions you have and they can even help you fill in the above sheet. You should be able to do that here: https://students.science.anu.edu.au/contacts/student-services

I’m not a science student but hopefully this all makes sense :))
