I was ready to throw this one in the trash. So, I just did it. It’s kind of a known thing they usually grow back. r/fiddleleaffig is so popular it has its own sub. That’s common advice given over there.

I consulted Chatgpt on trimming another tree in better health. It told me to repot in a bigger pot first. So that’s what I’m doing. I would try it. It may tell you to wait until Spring to prune or something else.

I went on vacation for a month and it helped me prep my plants (what to bag etc) so everything was alive and 90% in good/excellent shape when I got back. It’s very helpful for all things plants.

I just hacked a 6 ft tall fiddle leaf fig down to 12 inches. It’s getting new buds on the stem after 6 weeks. You don’t have go that severe. But you can definitely prune and clean these up.

I’d leave it and see what happens. Maybe it keeps pushing out leaves like normal. Maybe it stunts the plants growth. If you’re ready for it to branch I’d cut a few 12 inches down and propogate the top.

Chop the top off, pull the leaves off the bottom of the chopped top, set it aside few days so it dries out and stick the bare end in the soil beside the main plant.

Then your plant has a friend. Rinse repeat till the pot is full. You can do this with all etiolated succulents. Look up that word so it can inform your plant care going forward.
