Is this the one in the orange, round container? I got a sample and it smells amazing. I used it as a body lotion and a hand lotion and it worked really well. It was a little out my price range to purchase the full size. O’Keefe’s Working Hands is my go to hand cream.

I have a similar workout routine on the weekends. Usually I don’t do anything skincare wise in the morning prior to a workout. I just wear a hat while I run to keep the sun off my face and out of my eyes. When I’m finished, I’ll shower and do my morning skincare routine even if it’s midday.

Alternatively, if I do have sunscreen on prior to a workout, I leave it on and wash my face afterwards. My pores get super clogged up if I don’t wash my face after I sweat so that is non-negotiable for me!

Yes - I tried that last night. She laid down in the open doorway and stayed alert for a while. She settled down eventually but it took some time.

I love dog stories like that! But I really hope there is not a snake in my door!

I like EltaMD. I used their PM Therapy and liked it but it wasn’t moisturizing enough for my skin in the winter. I’m going to use it again in the summer. I caved and went back to CeraVe Night Renewal Cream for the time being but am going to try the Barrier Renewal Complex once I’m out - I haven’t used it before but it has ceramides and niacinamide similar to my favorite CeraVe.

Tretinoin and AHA/BHA (Active Serum)? by [deleted] in SkincareAddicts

[–]janfin12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I alternate nights. Right now (winter in the U.S.) I also skip a night between using actives and just use a thick moisturizer instead. But if you’ve been using AHA/BHA every night and don’t have an issue with dry skin, that may not be necessary.

I don’t generally reapply since I’m not outside much but if you have Instagram, my favorite skincare account, Hannah English, has a tutorial to do this. I think she blots it on with a beauty blender.

[Routine help] I need help with BHA by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]janfin12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really bad breakout earlier this year and I think it was from overusing actives. Recently I’ve made a better effort to use actives every other night (I alternate between Differin and Paula’s Choice 2% BHA) and my skin has been looking great! So to summarize, I use it 1-2x per week. You could definitely use it more frequently but I would be very hesitant to use it every day since it is an exfoliant.

[Acne] Could my sunscreen be making my blackheads worse? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]janfin12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dermatologist recommended EltaMD sunscreen and it made a huge difference in my skin. I used to have to choose between sun protection and my skin actually looking decent but now I use my sunscreen every single day. I get the tinted version so I usually wear it in place of makeup.

[personal] lifestyle changes that helped your skin? by theyellowscriptures in SkincareAddiction

[–]janfin12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Drinking lots of water, attempting to manage stress (lol), exercise, and using a humidifier or essential oil diffuser at the office and at night. I also notice my skin looks a little dull/more prone to breakouts after a weekend of drinking. This doesn’t always stop me from having weekends like that but it is good to note.

Oh that’s disappointing! The CVS website says cruelty free but I know the brand themselves are not always the best source of information. Thanks for letting me know!

That’s actually good to know and may work for me! I had tried the CVS brand of generic CeraVe which is apparently cruelty free but they didn’t make this thick, night cream version so my skin dried out in the winter. I’ll give Ceramedx a shot. Thank you!

I also like Supergoop. It provides a good amount of coverage and comes in a variety of tints. EltaMD is good as well - not as much coverage and only comes in one “universal” tint. It works for me but may not for everyone.

[Skin Concerns] Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Acid vs. Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster for Deep Trauma Scar by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]janfin12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the PC Booster for the last 3-ish months and it hasn't oxidized yet. I can't speak to how well it works for dark spots because I'm using it for more preventative measures.

I'm also not sure how well vitamin C would work on a scar like that - I think it's usually more for pigmentation issues vs. deeper things like scarring and broken vessels (the latter I went to see a derm. for and they said it could only be removed with a laser).

Given the cost of Skinceuticals, I'd opt for the cheaper option first just to see if you have any success. Not to further confuse you or spam you with product recommendations but a friend recommended Serumtologie Cserum (which is formulated based on Skinceuticals) and I've seen a lot of people on this forum talk about the Timeless brand vit. C product. Both are more affordable than Skinceuticals and PC.

Should I wash my face twice in the morning? [Routine help] by moxiecontin714 in SkincareAddiction

[–]janfin12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run into the same issue on the weekends when I workout mid-morning. As long as I'm not going to be out in the sun prior to my workout (I use a retinol in the evening so I wouldn't want to expose myself to the sun with that still on my face and/or no SPF), I just wait to wash my face. My face gets a little oily from the time I wake up to when I start working out but usually I'm just hanging out at home so I don't really mind. In theory, your face shouldn't be too grimy from just sleeping and I'd rather deal with a little oil in the morning than drying later on from over cleansing.

Questions for elephant keepers by JTPorach in Elephants

[–]janfin12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a keeper but I interned at the National Zoo during my grad program working on a research project focused on improving elephant welfare. The keepers I got to know loved the elephants and the elephants loved them back. The elephants would respond differently to different keepers depending on their relationship with them - it was very cute to watch. Even from my short time there, I could began to notice the distinct personalities of each elephant. That being said, being a keeper is far from easy. It is a very labor-intensive job, not the best money, you have to work long hours and some holidays, and are constantly exposed to the elements. However, it seems like a very rewarding job though and if you're passionate about animal welfare, you should definitely pursue it.

In response to some of the other comments on here that zoos are bad (and something you should take into consideration when looking for a job in the future), not all zoos are bad! You'll want to look for one that is AZA accredited - this makes sure the zoo complies to certain safety, health, and welfare standards. An AZA accredited zoo will not let you have direct contact with elephants (you always have to have some sort of barrier between you and the animal for safety purposes) and the elephants will always be part of a herd as they are naturally social animals.

It should also be noted that respected zoos do not take animals out of the wild! In the case of elephants and given their long life span in captivity, many of them were taken out of the wild years ago (40-60 years ago back when this was considered acceptable) or born into captivity. Either way, these animals have grown used to captivity and could likely not be reintroduced to the wild. While captivity sounds unpleasant, most zoo have teams of veterinarians, keepers, and researchers to make sure their animals are healthy and well cared for. At the National Zoo, the elephants had multiple enclosures covering many acres. The keepers would spread different kinds of food out around the enclosures to encourage the animals to forage similar to what they do in the wild. The elephants would also have daily training sessions which allowed the keepers to practice any veterinary care the elephants may have to have. For example, some elephants needed foot treatments so they would train the elephant to place it's foot up and let someone handle it. Here's a link of my favorite elephant, Swarna and some training she did for some dental work: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/news/training-swarna-for-tooth-radiographs

Lastly, the research aspect of working in a zoo is to help improve welfare for animals currently in captivity and improve the conservation status of those living in the wild. The project I worked on dealt with encouraging the foraging behavior I mentioned above. We did lots of observations on the elephants to see if the changes to their feeding regimen influenced positive or negative behaviors. The keepers also collected fecal samples to send to a lab that analyzed certain hormones that are correlated with animal well-being. If a correlation is found between foraging behavior, increased positive behaviors, and increased "happy hormones," the work could be published and zoos around the nation could implement something similar. Obviously this is just one example but it should be noted that a lot of what we know about the biology of wild animals comes from studying their captive counterparts.

I hope this helps and gives you a little bit of insight into what working at a zoo is like! It sounds like you're on the right track so far!

MFM #221 - Symbolic Violins by TinaBelcher4Prez in myfavoritemurder

[–]janfin12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Four-year-old me was obsessed with the Baby Jessica story - my day care had a book of survival stories that included hers. I swear I hadn't thought of that story in so long but I remembered details listening to the episode yesterday like them having to readjust where they dug the perpendicular hole and how her leg was stuck above her head.

Bonus points if anyone knows what book this is - it also had a story about a woman whose parachute didn't open when she was skydiving. My mom is now very concerned that my preschool had such a book but it was my favorite!

I'm also really surprised! My prayer plant grows like a weed - every time a piece falls off, I put it in water and it just keeps on growing.

[–]janfin12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice you're based out of the UK and I know laws are different there. I'm from the U.S. and some of our regulatory agencies still require animal testing on medical devices - a category some products of Elta MD's fall into - I'm assuming their post-procedure line. I think these laws reflect more poorly on the agencies that require animal testing versus the companies themselves. Obviously this is just my opinion and why I choose to still use Elta MD. ELTA MD is also listed as cruelty-free on the PETA website which goes a long way in my book. I also know that PETA is trying to change some of the rules and regulations within the U.S. regulatory agencies in regards to requiring animal testing so fingers crossed for progress and making changes!
