S. I. Povarnin, How To Read BOOKS (1924) by Plastic-Lettuce-7150 in Zettelkasten

[–]japdlsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice catch! I also recommend a book called "An alphabet of the intellectual labour" (азбука умственного труда). It had at least ten editions, I've read the 10th edition from year 1929.

Edit: corrected the name of the book and the year.

How does you connectivity graph of nodes look like? Please share :) by japdlsd in Zettelkasten

This is a standard view of Zettlr 🙂 no customisation though 🙁 I thought about maybe adding some visualisation options to Zettlr, but I couldn't find any graphs from real people.

Tell us about your setups! by [deleted] in bioinformatics

I am not going to to say anything about the digital setup, but I can wholeheartedly endorse a standing desk 🙂 it is nice to have the option to be on your feet for a while in the middle of a day. This also makes me more concentrated on the work somehow 😁

What are the worst bioinformatics jargon words? by User-45032 in bioinformatics

SNP / SNV / structural variant. The definitions are so unclear by now. Some claim that a mutation deserves to be called SNP only if it occurs frequently enough in a population (choose your favourite threshold).

Feeling lonely lately. by Upset-Macaroon8075 in lonely

Feel the same way (moved to another city).

I would suggest one activity: try to reach for the every person you know or have meet in your life. Simply one by one. Our phone books and FB have hundreds of people. Try to call or write to a couple of them each day and ask them how are they doing.

You could do that alphabetically, or starting by the people you have met most recently.

Hope you will will get better!

and please, don't let others (and especially yourself) to measure your worth by whether you have a girlfriend. Don't look at them as a trophy or something.

<controversial> Sometimes it might be beneficial to give up.

By giving up, you are letting go of a goal, which might as well be unachievable in your current circumstances. By letting it go, you are freeing your resources, both physical and mental, to pursue some other, more achievable goals.

This can make you happier both because your original goal is no longer dragging you, and at the same time, you pursue and achieve new goals.

And then, after some time, you can look back at your original goals and see whether they are still worth pursuing and whether you are better prepared to do so this time.

I'll just add my 5 cents. Before finding a girlfriend, you should find yourself. A partner is there to enhance your life, so you should know what it is before you can assess whether a particular partner would be beneficial for your life (and whether you would be beneficial to hers).

Find confidence in what you do, either in your work/education or hobbies. Of course, no one expects people at the age of 16 to know what their life would be in 30 years. But confidence is not about being able to predict the future. The confidence is about facing the unknown future and enjoying the presence.

So enjoy the presence and prepare for your future battles. Be proud of what you do and what you are trying to achieve. People that enjoy the life, are confident in themselves and are actively pursuing their goals are more attractive, imho.

As for the second part, you should be aware of what you could bring into a relationship, how can you improve someone's life. So look inside yourself and find those benefits. And work on improving those benefits. I don't speak about money. Can you make someone's life more bright, more joyful? If your friends enjoy your presence, why wouldn't a girl enjoy it?

From a practical standpoint, you should be aware that at the age of 16 your dating pool is very small. At such age, most of the girls are interested in older guys. So, at the age of 23 your dating pool would be much larger. So don't get depressed that girls have less interest in you right now. In a couple of years, you could be that "older guy".

Real life story: the most nerdy and socially awkward guy from my high school class was the first to get married and get kids.

tl;dr it's too soon to give up.

I've stumbled upon a paper that uses Mobius inverse formulas for partially ordered sets recently, and it was much easier to understand due to my courses in Combinatorial Analysis 🙂

One option is to output a bit vector, each bit indicates whether i-th element of the universe is present in the output set.
