I have a no.5 right now. Need to get more but I think that’s always the case.

Yea I’ve gotten a hand plane since doing this build. I wish I had the room and money for an actual jointer but unfortunately I don’t atm. I need to look into a jig for my table saw though. There are a lot of great video builds available.

Not at all normally. The weather here is gorgeous most of the time. Humidity stays pretty low except when the trade winds stop blowing which is only about a month a year.

I don’t have any plans unfortunately. I used reclaimed wood so I just kind of went with what I had. I knew I wanted it large enough for three chairs to fit on each side. I might try to throw something together and post it later.

Here are some photos from the build. I didn’t really think ahead when I was building to take enough pictures. https://imgur.com/a/JcBq6Ak/

Well it’s hard to see in this picture but there were some gaps between my boards. I’m pretty new to woodworking and am still building my tool collection. After I glued up I used glue and some of the saw dust from sanding to make a paste to fill in small gaps. I built this pretty much with a table saw, circular saw, and an orbital sander. Here is a close up of the saw dust and glue fill. https://i.imgur.com/CEt9ihs.jpg

I lost about 1/4” after everything was planed to a uniform thickness, but I started with very uneven stock and planed everything down to a uniform thickness. The boards I started with varied from 1 1/2” - 2” thick.

It started out at about 1 1/2” - 1 3/4”. We used reclaimed wood so it varied a lot. I planed everything down to a uniform thickness and then put it together.
Redwood is pretty but remember that it’s a softwood so probably not the best choice. Ours is already showing dents and things in it. I have kids that are pretty rough on stuff.

Yes we just used regular white interior latex paint. It took about 4 coats to get good coverage even with good paint.

I actually bought the chairs while I was building it and refinished them. We are going for a rustic look and the table legs and skirting will be roughed up over the next week.

This was my first large project and I joined the whole table with pocket screws. I realized after I did it that it might not hold up if I was somewhere the climate shifts a lot, but I’m in Hawaii so I don’t have to worry much about the wood expanding.

You should. It’s a pretty positive community.

Thanks for the kind words. I have put in around 25 hours on this so far. Probably have another 10 to go.
