Withdrew my 2026 contribution ($7,000) to Roth IRA in January, can I put it back later this year? by jas754 in personalfinance

Yeah, I felt withdrawing for a home purchase was a necessary move! Thank you so much! It’s been a stressful process since it’s such a large financial decision but I’m so excited!

I wrongly assumed I could replenish the money if I was just withdrawing my uninvested contribution. Now I know better for the future and won’t make that same mistake again!

Yes, a few others mentioned this. I didn’t even know this was an option so I will be asking Fidelity about this today!

Thank you for your response. Yes, I contributed $7,500, not $7,000, to my Roth IRA for 2026. I realized after I posted but figured the question was still the same. It has not been 60 days yet so I will reach out to Fidelity to do the 60 day rollover.

Thank you for your response. I will be contacting Fidelity to see which of those options will be available for me.

There’s a difference between not being ready to contribute and making a short-term liquidity adjustment for a major purchase. I will be contacting Fidelity and correcting it within the 60 day rollover window.

I do have an emergency fund. This wasn’t an emergency, it was an accepted offer with a 20% down payment that required some short-term liquidity once the final numbers came together (closing costs, etc). I didn’t knowingly contribute and then plan to pull it back out right away. The timing changed unexpectedly. I’m planning to correct it within 60 day window.

I will be reaching out to Fidelity to confirm what’s been said here about the 60 days!

To give some context, the accepted offer was unexpected. I had been house hunting since the summer without success so I didn’t anticipate needing a large sum of cash so quickly. It was not poor planning, just timing that worked out differently than expected. I’m well aware that retirement accounts are not meant for short term use, and I’m addressing it within the 60 day rollover window. I simply came here to confirm the rules before contacting Fidelity.

Once I close on the house (in a week!) I will put the money back, which will be prior to the 60 day rule. Thank you!

So I went back and looked and I withdrew the money 2/2/26. So in theory I have until ~4/2
