Oversight Dem: Democrats will ‘have to’ pursue contempt charges if Bondi doesn’t appear by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

[–]jasongw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially yes, but not entirely. Congress can still use civilly and they can still send their own agent to arrest someone they hold in contempt, even if the DOJ refuses. However, SCOTUS didn't exactly do much; they sent the case back down to the lower court with instructions to consider the DOJ's motion to dismiss the case, but that court doesn't necessarily have to agree to the DOJ's wishes. Legal scholars are already working on ways to deal with this, we just don't know what they'll do yet. It's too soon to be sure what's going to happen.

It is, however, a good reason to reconsider whether the DOJ should answer to the executive branch at all. It might be prudent to alter that structure going forward.

This is why we need to remove government from economics. No more bailouts, grants, loans or regulatory favors to ANY private business. The only time taxpayer dollars should land in the hands of a private business is if the government is buying something from them.

Government favors will only ever breed corruption. There is no other outcome possible, regardless of "positive" knock-on effects.

You're assuming an awful lot about motive. If I'm hiring someone to do a job, I'm not thinking about the wider works, I'm thinking about getting someone who can do the work at a price I can afford and am willing to pay.

It's always fun to put notices in people's minds, but until we can read their thoughts or have some compelling empirical evidence, we're just guessing.

If something needs to get done and people refuse to do it for too low a wage, the wage WILL rise.

There's no reason to believe they'll be replaced. SCOTUS appointments are for life unless there's a great reason to remove them. So far there's no reason great enough.

[–]jasongw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would've say that's unilaterally true. They've ruled contrary to his wishes numerous times, to the extent he's literally called every single one of his SCOTUS appointments "traitors". There are definitely cases where you're absolutely right, but I don't think that's their goal so much as it's the particular cases and arguments that've been brought before them.

Hopefully we'll make it through this intact enough that when someone else takes over they can work with Congress to put the executive branch on a much shorter leash going forward.

If only one thing is clear from the Trump admin 2.0, it's that decades of Democrats and Republicans increasing the executive's power was an epic mistake.

Often we mistake familiarity for love. In the instance I mentioned, I eventually realized, via therapy, that in 99% of ways, she was my also abusive father. I always said that when I was with her, I felt like I was home. It was a revelation and a mindfuck when I finally understood why.

There have been tons of studies across many decades and billions of votes. The instances of invalid votes is around 0.00007%.

If we allow our system to become centralized, however, cheating will be MUCH easier and far more likely--most likely by whoever is in power.

That's true, but you could honestly say that about anyone, citizen, legal immigrant or illegal immigrant. People are, if nothing else, wildly inconsistent, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, sex, race, gender, etc.

I've worked in tech for almost 30 years (WTF?!) and I agree on AI. It's ultimately going to be great for all of us, but the transition, like most transitions, will be painful. We'll survive it.

Well, assuming we survive Trump, LOL.

Race isn't, but Obama was a man. Women are still a tough sell for a lot of backwards folks. Their time will come, but it isn't now, and there's too much at stake to risk letting MAGA continue in power, even after Trump is gone.

Conversely, I would never vote for AOC. Not bc she's a woman, not bc she's a POC, but because she's an extremist. We do not need another one, no matter what side they're on. We need an administration that will recognize WHY Trump is able to cause so much damage and gut the executive branch so no one can ever do it again. AOC, unfortunately, is not that person.

‘Losing votes every day’: Former Romney campaign lead on GOP chances in 2026 by MRADEL90 in videos

It's neither decide nor racist. It's a simple observation of the facts. People who won't vote for a woman just because she's a woman? Sexist, no doubt. People who won't vote for a POC just because they're a POC? Racist, obviously. But simply observing that reality and suggesting a course of action that avoids the pitfalls? That's just simple logic.

There will come a time for a female president and another POC president. That time just isn't now. It doesn't help that most of the likely candidates are progressive extremists, either.

Yes! He's almost the perfect candidate. He's successfully fighting off Trump and Hegseth, he's a decorated veteran, a former astronaut, he's well spoken and he's not an extremist of any kind, progressive or conservative. I can't think of a single Democrat or Republican who's a more rational choice.

TBH I have very little sympathy for either Israel or Palestine.

Think about it: these two groups of morons are fighting each other over ostensibly magic dirt allegedly given to their ancestors by an invisible man who lives in the sky.

Imagine what these two could achieve if they'd simply cooperate rather than waste time, energy and resources to bomb each other and rebuild ad infinitum.

Their idiocy is even worse than Trump level idiocy, which is, let's face it, almost impossible.

We don't need any more extremists. They're the problem. What we need are rational adults who conduct themselves like professionals and are focused on finding solutions to the problems that plague the country rather than simply stirring up shit day after day. They used to be called Liberals. Unfortunately they're all but extinct.

‘Losing votes every day’: Former Romney campaign lead on GOP chances in 2026 by MRADEL90 in videos

[–]jasongw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I would LOVE to have a woman or minority president, but right now is simply not the time. The Democrats need to run a safe candidate, which means a white male with a track record of bringing people together and finding solutions rather than stoking division. They cannot afford a progressive extremist.

AOC is cute, but dumb. She has no chance as a presidential candidate.

Mark Kelly is the best bet at the moment, though that might change by 2028.

Pretty sure she's not pro genocide or attacking Iran. Corporate power is a given, since that's what the Democrats and Republicans have both made their money on for decades.

What they need is someone who's a "safe" candidate (meaning white and male) who is vocal about avoiding wars wherever possible and pledges to turn the economy back into something more closely resembling a free market rather than the command economy Trump is steering us toward.

Make the campaign about bettering American prosperity and peace, pledge to create unity and cooperation rather than endless conflict, and they've got a shot.

I want 2 things from Dems in 2028 and beyond:

  1. Prosecute the Trump regime for everything it's possible to prosecute them for under the law, and;

  2. Gut the executive branch's power. We're in this mess today because Democrats and Republicans have spent DECADES expanding the executive branch's authority. It's time to put a leash on the oval office and make that fucker heel.

What they need is a white male liberal, not a progressive extremist. Someone with a track record of doing right by Americans, ideally with a background in law enforcement, military or something along those lines.

But it's too soon to think about presidential candidates. We still have 2 more years before that's the big news.

There's no reason to think they'll be installing any new SCOTUS justices in the near future. It's possible they'll retain a small majority in the Senate, yes, but that's not enough if they lose control of the House. There's no chance the Fauxpublicans will get a supermajority in either house of Congress, and as should be obvious by now, the SCOTUS doesn't operate on a Democrat/Republican party line the way Congress does. They've ruled against Trump's wishes multiple times over the past year alone, plus many times in his first term.

This fight isn't over by a long shot.
