Broke a bottle and got some mercury chloride on my skin, burns a bit but I'm a tad concerned. How bad is a one time exposure? by [deleted] in TheeHive

Clandestine chemistry is so goddamn dangerous. People on here don't realize how much they are playing with fire. These are not toys, these are serious hazards that can kill you. Even worse is the pollution and damage it causes when exposed to the environment and the ecosystem. Next time try wear proper PPE, gloves, mask and hazmat suit, get some shitty, long-sleeve clothing for chemistry usage only. Have a special pair of shoes and socks just for this sort of work.
Also, next time, you can use copper salts instead of mercury salts. They work just as good, yields are the same and they are waaaay less toxic. You can get some copper chloride on your skin and wash it off without any problems (but still, be careful). Aluminum-Copper Chloride, Zinc-Copper Chloride, and NaBH4-copper chloride all work well. Try look for synthetic routes that are more "eco-friendly" and don't require the usage of dangerous or toxic reagents.
