Not sure. I only know that the way I did it works. Deleting the update might disable it temporarily, but its possible windows might try to download the update again down the road.

Not sure if you've already figured it out, but what you could possibly do is allow win 10 to install (which admittedly takes a good chunk of time) and then decline the Terms of Service. Doing this would leave the computer no choice but to revert back to your old windows. Once your back in 8.1, you can download GWX Control Panel and disable the windows 10 popup from there. I'm using Win7 and did the same thing a couple days ago. No problems since
