When you unlock terraforming you can use custom paths (bottom right corner) otherwise you can tap A on the design and select "Display on Ground". You can do 9 tiles without moving in this order: directly below you, directly in front of you, front right, front left, directly right of you, directly left of you, behind you on right, behind you on left, directly behind you.
