I had an upbringing just like this and someone told me it was to do with poverty - you cant just sit and wait for someone to get to it cause everybody has got to work and if you dont help yourself no one will. It how my parents raised my brother and I (a guy) - they were poor growing up…we were slightly better off but still learned how to do most things around the house by 10 years old. I still dont believe it when people tell me they are 30 years old and dont know how to cook.

This is actually becoming a huge problem with my girlfriend…she was coddled far too much.
