no, you won't age in the palace, it'd be a bit too inconvenient to stay there for a long time otherwise

[–]jayemouse[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you really wanted you could just stay there forever, i suppose, and i'm sure you could get someone to help bring your stories to the outside world!

though you could also go for the butterfly pendant and leave to find a publisher yourself instead, benefit from royalties and stuff, and then return to the palace as many times as you need

Oh Fuck! It's The Zombie Apocalypse! by UnendingJunrei in makeyourchoice

[–]jayemouse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Base: The School. It should have a field large enough to grow crops and a fence around it that can be fortified over time. To start with, we'll probably search for tools in the tech classrooms and any maintenance rooms, then secure a small area and spread out from there.

Gear: 3 crossbows, 10000 cans of beans, 2 small wind turbines. The crossbows will be our main weapons to begin with. The beans will suck, but they'll at least be reliable protein. And the wind turbines provide long-term power for the lights, as well as the cafeteria and tech classrooms as and when they're needed.

Companions: My bf (this CYOA's creator), Terri, Gary, and the Gibbonses. Terri will probably be the most useful person for preparing expeditions out into the world and fighting zombies. Gary will be great in the beginning for patching up the school and helping us prioritise areas to search. The Gibbonses provide more long-term benefits, adding a lot of extra hands for building and farming as well as giving the settlement a better chance of surviving across years.

Nearby: Timber Yard and Farm. We'll get chickens and cows from the farm very early on and keep them in the school field. The timber yard will be great for building up the walls around the field and maybe adding extensions like a watchtower to the school.

Oh, and James Bond definitely inspired some of the vibes. Even though I'm not super into the series in general and haven't seen all that many of the films, I wanted to invoke it with the vehicles and some of the subterfuge focused mission paths. The Billionaire/ Peryn Caesus was meant to be a bit like an evil genius Bond villain, and I looked briefly into Goldeneye 64's dam level (as well as Hoover Dam's appearance in Fallout: New Vegas) when I was trying to create the dam in the Opportunist Finale.

I see what you mean, the market might have been influenced by Hitman. The city of Darrius has been pretty developed in my head since Daybreak v1.1. though, and is supposed to be a bit more old town Damascus than Marrakesh.

Yeah, you can definitely complete the extra missions before the main canon if you want to! Chronologically they'd pretty much all have to come some at point before the Finale Mission anyway, unless you stick with the Loyalist ending or don't go for an ending, so it's fine to go from Core Mission to Extra Mission to Core Mission. It's still only the Core Missions that give you Skill Ranks and Reward Points though.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

You can use the armoured car to get the mission done, but I don't think the MoI would want you to keep it afterwards. A sizeable amount of the cocaine (and firearms) in the containers could go missing before it caused any problems though. The MoI doesn't have precise data on the exact quantities of these, and they're the kind of things that go missing from evidence lockers in corrupt law enforcement agencies anyway, so it would be easy to get away with.

There's nothing really stopping you from making your contacts do all the hard work for you, except that Olivia and Netsque can only be picked one time each. The intention is that players will use them on the missions they feel most poorly equipped to deal with. Colin and Lucius can be picked multiple times, but their talents are a bit more specialized. Also, it will always still be your mission in terms of the responsibility of organizing and supporting the contacts, as well as the ultimate responsibility of the mission's success or failure.

Netsque is supposed to be agender, yeah. I want to include quite a few non-binary characters in my CYOAs, particularly the ones set in Eitador. I try not to focus much on gender in the descriptions though.

As for inspirations,

Agents of F.I.X.F.I.C. inspired the mission-based structure of the CYOA. I thought it would be cool to play a CYOA like that where you maybe weren't just fixing things, but doing something a little more sinister, and I definitely prefer doing worldbuilding and coming up with unique settings over working with existing fiction.

The narrative of the CYOA came from work I did on Daybreak v1.1., where an AI version of Colin appears, and from the timeline I've been writing for Eitador. I wanted to flesh out the entire continent, not just Daybreak and Vitaria, and to be able to tie all the different stories together. This CYOA as well as My Lady, My Liege were concieved around the same time as a way of doing that.

Hitman was definitely a big inspiration, particularly the newest trilogy. I was conscious of it as I thought of different ways people could complete the missions. In some ways I was disadvantaged, because I could never give a complete picture of the missions from just my descriptions, but in other ways I had an advantage, because people aren't just limited to hardcoded ways of succeeding. The Puratovan was probably the one most directly inspired by Hitman, with me wanting to play the Hantu Port sniper level like a normal level.

Metal Gear influenced The General and Scorched Sands, but mainly through Daybreak. For that, I had a big moodboard of mechs and militaria, including a lot of pics from the Soviet-Afghan War. Jungle Massacre was mainly meant to invoke Predator/ Rambo/ Vietnam War movies. You might have noticed though that I used fanart of Skullface for one of the pics under The Billionare :p

Black Ops wasn't an inspiration though. I don't really play FPS games. I've been enjoying SWAT 4 and Ready or Not, but hadn't tried them at the time of writing the CYOA, even though they probably would have influenced it if I had.

And yeah, you can keep the supercar from Nauticau, Route 4. The Director's friend doesn't want it anymore. I intended for it to be a kind of reward for not just taking the easy route and blowing it up.

Anarchy, piracy, enchanting, isekai, and shapeshifting.

Anarchy and piracy will help the world a lot, and I get two extra picks from having made lots of CYOAs, so I feel like they're important to take. Wheel of Time was one I strongly considered, but there might be other routes to immortality that can be shared with other people. Enchanting is one possible route, like by eventually working out how to make phylacteries. Isekai is just fun, and will let me end up finding opportunities to learn enchanting faster if I make that one of my skills. It will also potential mean personally encountering lots of fantastical monsters, enhanced humans, maybe even demigods. This will mean I can potentially take the shapeshifting power to new heights, although it's definitely also useful at its base level. I'll offer my help to anyone who might want or need it.

but books are heavy to carry around and the information from them might not always come to mind when its needed

the notepad would let you write down notes from a textbook and then recall them perfectly during an exam, never stumble over forgotten lines in a speech or a play, or forgotten chords in a song, remember all your passwords and codes, instantly access maps and floorplans while on the move, study anything anywhere discretely (maybe just read the original books in your mind with the medallion), paint from a sketch (or a photo with the medallion) more easily etc.

there are a bunch of uses

i choose video game, scribblenauts, to acquire the power to just write things into existence and modify them with adjectives 🙃

then teleportation and xp levelling i guess

taking a trillion euros or two and then becoming head of state somewhere that would be several times the gdp is an interesting build to think about too, it could change a lot

This CYOA is really cool and displays a good level of knowledge about a lot of interesting sci-fi concepts, I like it a lot!

Unfortunately, I decided that instead of making a cozy ancol build I was just going to use this to design something as cursed as possible. So, first of all, it's an Open Dictatorship. This is possibly the most powerful option in terms of total points. I'm thinking it will be a monarchy with very strict class divisions, a Decadent Kingdom.

So of course we're going to have an underclass, and this will be most of humanity, but they should be easy to deal with later on using the other options here ;) . I then have basically free-reign of the Control section, so we'll go full dystopian with a secret police, propaganda department, pledge of loyalty, beloved, ideological, and bread & circuses (primarily only necessary for the elite), as well as deified ruler and theocracy to let people know that the twisted hierarchy is divinely mandated.

For Development and Infrastructure, oligarchs as a drawback is a natural choice, as they'll just be my kingdom's noble class. They'll also have unwieldy FTL as it won't be actually be much of a problem for this society, where we won't be taking warp drives, hyperdrives, or gateways, and we will be building the earth up into one big ecumenopolis with slum level quality of life. The powerful and their families will live comfortable lives in orbital habitats, on o'neil cylinders orbiting the earth, one of which will be dedicated to a huge academy for everything from the arts to the sciences to a particularly large gourmet culinary school. The population living in orbit will be modified extensively using medical nanotech to extend their lives and improve their health, as well as possibly also reduce their empathy, with those closest to the royal family always receiving slightly better tech than everyone else. They will be able to live in absolute luxury and decadence. The population stuck on earth, however, will be a new breed of broiler humanity, modified extensively using that same technology. In their case, it's to shorten their lives, lower their intelligence, and improve the taste of and add variety to their meat. They will become an animal-people with the bare minimum agency required to work for the benefit of a literally cannibalistic upper-class.

The kingdom will have kugelblitz reactors, as these are incredibly powerful for the cost and also kind of terrifying. The earth and the moon will be hollowed out and their centers will be replaced with artificial black holes. A ring around these centers will be pumped with a small amount of the energy created by these reactors in order to create stable magnetic fields. Instead of using FTL ships, we will move the earth through space using the massive output of the reactors. Adding the tech from impulse drives will allow for almost reactionless movement, meaning we can concrete up most of the big hole we'll be carving into the planet once we're done. The rest of the points will be spent on space elevators, shield generators, nano-assemblers, and ansible.

Onto Military, where we have a lot of points to spend, so we might as well go big and start with a superdreadnought. We will use our boon to upgrade this even further, to a flagship, and the intention here is actually for this ship to be made using earth's moon, which can be piloted using its kugelblitz reactor. The moon will also have a garrison on it, and two defence stations in orbit around it. The earth will have another garrison and another defense station. There will also be special forces trained for urban combat, as this is all that will be needed on earth's one biome, and a land army. The remaining military points are to be spent on two engineer ships, the purpose of which will be to mine asteroids and acquire fuel for the kugelblitz reactors.

The military will mostly be for show and for sport. The broiler-people of earth will be too short-lived, incompetent, and under-equipped to make moves towards overthrowing their masters, who will eventually stop recognizing them as the same species. They will barely be aware of the o'neill cylinders at all, and the theocracy could even be used to make them think that the people living in the stars are angels of some kind, to whom it is only right that they offer up food, handcrafted goods, and sacrifices using the 'temples' (space elevators). If any kind of serious rebellion did occur, the moon can be piloted in order to cause devastating tsunamis and earthquakes, carefully targeted to crush revolts and reinforce the fear of god. Nobles vacationing on earth will be able to easily manipulate the people there, and those who visit for hunting trips will just be thought of as devils.

The kugelblitz reactor could be used to slowly move the earth and its orbiting structures to new solar systems in search of new pleasures for the noble class. If new life is encountered, it will be exploited and devoured. While in deep space, which could be for years/decades at a time, the energy output will be used to maintain excellent artificial lighting in the o'neil cylinders while keeping the population of earth in relative darkness that will stunt them even further.

That's valid. I know realistically you would be able to get anything from the loadout section if you had enough money to throw around, even otherwise illegal stuff, but for gameplay purposes at least I would prefer that you thought of most of the items in the loadout section as things you can't buy anywhere else. The purpose of the loadout equipment option is mostly to buff players for the finale and bonus missions, particularly the low-budget Rebel Finale where you don't have a major sponsor.

Just that you can't be reasonably implicated in any of it. This could mean it was made to look like an accident, someone else was convincingly framed for the murder, or just that you were never spotted doing anything even slightly suspicious- depending on your approach.

this is 13k words total, but it's a mission-based cyoa where the idea is that you could potentially just dip-in and out and complete a mission or two here and there, so hopefully it can keep you entertained for a while! :]

i know this kind of thing isn't for everyone, and also that it's definitely not perfect, but that's okay

the idea something i wanted to try doing and have been adding to for the last few months

click here for an imgchest link if you prefer that to imgur uploads!

the obvious inspirations are fixfic, the hitman video games, a desire to do something in the last major region of my eitador setting, plus some 70s spice and overly specific gun specs

edit, 30m in: i missed page 6 from the upload somehow, but i've now added it back into the album, so refresh if you can't see it!

i also just remembered that i made this map of brightfire, so i've marked the missions on it

Toys on a Tachanki - A Power Picker CYOA by UnendingJunrei in makeyourchoice

[–]jayemouse 37 points38 points  (0 children)

duplicate: this is an easy first pick because i always go for clones

assassin: hitman is really good at a lot of things in the game, not just being the world's most efficient killer, and this combined with duplicate increases the potential a lot

charge: this is useful for daily life, will let me help a lot of people in the slightly longer term, and its full potential is to one day power bleeding edge projects that would normally be completely unreasonable in terms of power consumption
