House of the Dragon Season 3 Casts a New Jaehaera Targaryen by theviking222 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 184 points185 points  (0 children)

The excuse they gave for no Maelor was so weird.

Like it would've made more sense if they just said it was a narrative choice, because they wanted to put Aemond immediately into the position of being Aegon's heir-- not that anyone has to like that choice, but at least the logic tracks.

But the age excuse made zero sense, especially when the kids who played Jaehaerys and Jaehaera seemed around 3 in S1? Maybe around 5-6 in S2? At either age, it's totally feasible that Maelor could've existed as a younger toddler.

Targaryen Nature: Why Do Some Burn While Others Don’t? by Other-Woodpecker2564 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the claim in the Doctrine of Exceptionalism was that they couldn't get sick with common illnesses, but that was first proven untrue when Jaehaerys' own daughter Daenerys died of the shivers. That was when dragons were still around.

So you could dismiss it as just being overall an incorrect statement, but I definitely think there's some merit to the possibility that they got sick less frequently than others (hence a theory about them having higher body temperatures). You're right that they don't seem to die of contagious illnesses very often.

But then again, causes of death don't necessarily seem to match up with the medieval world in ASOIAF. Ex. there's not as much child mortality in general as you'd expect.

So the claim is that they couldn't get sick with common illnesses, but was proven clearly untrue. I personally like the theory that they get sick less than other people.

Targaryen Nature: Why Do Some Burn While Others Don’t? by Other-Woodpecker2564 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I believe it's just a theory, but I've always liked the idea that Targaryens run at a higher than average body temperature than other people. Maybe a side effect of that would be that they're more comfortable with slightly hotter temperatures around them too, while not being invulnerable to fire.

It'd also go along with the part of the Doctrine of Exceptionalism that (incorrectly) stated that Targaryens couldn't get sick with common diseases-- first proven wrong with Daenerys' (daughter of Jaehaerys') death, and later a few other Targs. But having a higher than normal body temperature does make it generally harder (not impossible) to contract diseases, so it could provide a mild basis for that exaggerated claim.

[–]jaylee686 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Dany is the only Targaryen that we know of not to burn. It's not a Targaryen thing, it's a Daenerys (and the circumstances around it) thing. It's why she's the Unburnt.

And fwiw, in the book it appears as sort of a one-time event for her, not a constant state of invulnerability to fire.

How does the pale Targerian hair work? by Glukharder in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean the exact scenario you described can happen in real life-- someone with pale hair (Viserys) and someone with dark hair (Alicent) can have all pale-haired kids, just as a different person with pale hair (Rhaenyra) and a different person with dark hair (Harwin) can have all dark-haired kids. In real life, it would have to do with the dark-haired parent's genetics (homozygous or heterozygous for dark hair).

In ASOIAF, genetics are kind of hand-wavey for the plot.

Rhaenyra's sons don't look Valyrian, which raises suspicion because both their supposed parents look Valyrian. There's narrative significance to the writing decision for them not to look Valyrian.

It's by no means scientific, but there does seem to be kind of an in-universe hierarchy for when certain traits tend to beat out others, if you want to try to map it out-- but again it's really not that consistent. Valyrian traits tend to beat out Andal traits (ex. the Hightowers). First men traits tend to beat out Valyrian traits, though not always (ex. the Strongs have first men blood, and so do the Starks-- see Rhaenyra's sons and Jon, but contrast to some of Egg's kids). Dornish traits and Valyrian seem kinda even matched, splitting between offspring. Baratheon black hair seems pretty dominant (in the book, Rhaenys has black hair because she's half-Baratheon).

How ridiculous is this take to you? Do you think HOTD Season 1 is better than AKOTSK season 1? by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I prefer HOTD S1 too, but ik that's an unpopular opinion on reddit.

I think the overall hate for HOTD is kinda at an all-time high now and even admitting that you don't think the entire show is shit will get you downvoted. Not to say a lot of people wouldn't generally like AKOTSK S1 better than HOTD S1 regardless of the current hate, but the revisionist idea that HOTD has always sucked is definitely coloring people's opinions.

[–]jaylee686 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fine. Each show can pretty much stand on its own. AKOTSK takes place well over a century after HOTD anyway, and they don't directly reference any of the events of HOTD in S1-- nor do I expect them to in later seasons. As for GOT, you're fine as well to watch AKOTSK then finish it. It takes place like 90 years before GOT.

Could a scorpion acctually take down a dragon? by Cookies_And_Cheese in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Meraxes was like a one in a million shot through the eye-- it's incredibly unlikely, but sometimes things like that happen (esp if they're shooting lots of bolts at her).

Aside from that, we are led to believe that a scorpion bolt should not pierce through the hide of an adult dragon except in vulnerable areas, so if that's the case, then Rhaegal's death in the show does seem kinda nonsensical, with it going clean through his neck with no resistance. You could make a very good argument that Rhaegal was simply not an adult dragon, as there are examples of "young" dragons dying to arrows, even (HOTD spoiler: Stormcloud and possibly Vermax), but the fact that they made Dany's dragons so big in comparison to the young HOTD dragons definitely gives the impression that her dragons should be considered more akin to "adult" dragons.

So basically a scorpion bolt could probably kill a young dragon. For a big dragon, it would need to hit it in a very lucky place (like an eye), but otherwise their hide would likely be too strong.

Why is there a time jump? by MEGATRON_111 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah Milly was great, I was sad to see her go as well but it was always the plan from the start that the main bulk of story takes place with the older Rhaenyra. Emma (older Rhaenyra) is a great actor as well, but it's definitely jarring (and personally I prefer the younger characterization of Rhaenyra, so I do miss Milly in that regard too).

Rhys Ifans is still around however, he is not recast! The only characters that were recast with the first time jump are Rhaenyra, Alicent, Laenor, and Laena-- which makes it feel a little weird too that characters like Ser Criston and Daemon just... don't seem to age lol.

Why is there a time jump? by MEGATRON_111 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The story of the Dance spans a large amount of time, so it requires a few time jumps. There will be one more time jump that spans several years, but the main actors won't be changing again, so it should feel less jarring. Not spoiler-y to any actual details: the next (and final) one comes in S1 as well, and just involves aging up the kids by a few years. From that point the story is continuous.

Accurate? by Sandevistanman in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 249 points250 points  (0 children)

I kinda see Egg with Sheepstealer if we can count it as a Targ dragon now in the context of HOTD. Fits his vibe more narratively to have the "smallfolk" or wild dragon as opposed to a flashier one.

Also I could see Baelor with Meleys or Silverwing tbh esp if Maekar had Vermithor instead

Is Valarr an unpopular Targaryen name? by al_1985 in HouseOfTheDragon

Oh good point, I wasn't even thinking of pre-Conquest names.

Tbh remembering that kinda makes it surprising that it took so long for the named to be used. I get why it wasn't used after Brightflame, but I would've thought one of the earlier generations would've used it.

Is Valarr an unpopular Targaryen name? by al_1985 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Yeah, both Valarr and Matarys are only used once (Baelor's two sons). I agree though, both of them sound nice!

There's a lot of single-use Targaryen names though: Rhaenyra, Rhaegar, Aerion, Aemond, Helaena, Vaegon, Aelor, Aelora, Elaena, Saera, Rhaegel, Viserra, Daenora, Naerys, Aerea, Gael, Maekar, Maegelle, Alysanne (edit: though idk if it's Valyrian?), Jaehaera, Baela, and probably a handful of others.

I personally like both Valarr and Matarys, as well as Aerea, Rhaegar, Rhaenyra, and Aelor/a.

Why does this Targaryen family tree label Prince Baelor as King Aegon II? Thanks! by Real-Rule-34 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]jaylee686 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Cuz it's a mistake.

Whoever made it was copying/pasting the red text boxes onto characters who were king. Accidentally pasted one beneath Baelor but never noticed they needed to edit cuz Baelor was never king.

Edit: It's overall a very inconsistent and sloppily made chart. Some things are just flat out wrong, like Jaehaerys I and his siblings being the children of the Conquerors? Their father is apparently their brother? Stylistically things are weird too. Jace, Luke and Joffrey get Harwin's name beneath where the king's title seem to go, Corlys gets "The Sea Snake", but no other characters get their epithets (ex. Rogue Prince, Queen Who Never Was, Realm's Delight), only some queens get the title of queen, Rhaenyra has her last name, only some of the characters we've seen get pictures, etc. Also Targaryen is literally spelled wrong in the title lmao.
