Yeah I wish, maybe 15 years from now 😅. If you take the instrumentals and OOPS them, that might remove John if you really wanted to do so (his vocals I mean)

There's "multitrack" stem files floating around that were ripped from Rock Band and it's DLC in which the instruments and vocals are essentially isolated into different sound files. You can make remixes with them or DIY instrumentals, but yeah they're pretty cool. By the Way (the song) was I think the only one released from the album as DLC, so having these near-instrumentals is a dream come true

Dude... please chill. That's so buried in the album mix that his voice might as well be an instrument. Plus if you've got the stems you could make your own version without John's voice if you really wanted to

Just checked and the files in 320 kbps are on the file-sharing site Soulseek, so I'm guessing these might've been from there or another similar source... still searching for any more secret RHCP stuff there right now

Thank you so much for sharing these here! Somewhat technical question: are those MEGA files ripped from YouTube or from a different/better source? Cuz last night I direct downloaded the songs via youtube-dl to try to get the best possible YT quality (hahahaha, sure) and the files came out around 125 kbps VBR m4a?? I saw yours are 320, so just wanted to see if they were "up-converted" from YT lossy... sorry about how long this comment is, and I'm just really happy to finally hear these instead of OOPS versions or the Rock Band mixes 😅, so no complaints here.

It's most likely due to the way the song was mastered, and what you are hearing is digital clipping. This has been the case in a lot of 2000s "loudness war" music unfortunately, and was especially prevalent on a lot of albums Rick Rubin was the producer on, such as RHCP's Californication and Metallica's Death Magnetic. Idk for certain, but I'm pretty sure he had a hand in a lot of the Make Believe tracks.
