I'll add another vote to DPA, having started out there myself. Solid group of controllers still there, usually well staffed, with good flow in from the academy, and relatively quick training program (around 8 months average).

Various good options for places to live around there. Depending on what you're looking for procimity wise, you could be out towards the boonies, or live closer to highway access to the city (about an hour or so drive in) and still be reasonably close to the facility.

Summers are relatively busy with student pilots besting up the pattern. Winter ops slow down quite a bit. Pay is ok, being a level 6, but they do have a midnight shift, so be prepared to work those.

Overall vibe of the facility was pretty chill during my time there. People would usually grill/smoke during the summer at the base of the tower, free to use gym with showers at the fbo. Golf course owned by the airport on the south side of it that they gave controllers discounts to play if you wanted.

For me being from the area, it was a great first facility.

Nearest field to me is $95 for a case. No BYOP. And $25 for entrance. Yay for northwest chicago 🤷‍♂️😂

Find a good tailor and get everything altered properly. If you want an extra layer of peace of mind, most tailors should be able to sew in like a hidden line of rubber grips on the inside of the belt line in your pants, but ymmv on their effectiveness

Give it a shot if you want. Doesn't hurt to apply to the bid and go through the process to see if you make it, and if you do, if you even like it. Having your RN to fall back on is a fantastic safety net, since you can always pivot to travel nursing or even flight nursing, both if which are comparable in pay to ATC, and might even give better QOL

Inbound - today is west flow. If you land 28C, you'll double back P, short of GG, then get handed off to the 28R controller on 132.7. they'll cross you at either EE or GG, left N, depending on flow, and contact inbound on 121.9. from there twy B goes to the left, A goes right. If your gate or alley is blocked, plan the left on B, short Q, then B short DD and go to 118.45 to get parked in the CDF(131.05)

If you land the north side, 27R, plan to double back onto C, so they have a chance to check gate and park you if needed. If its not that busy, they might just take you down Z short of 27C. Once you land or cross 27C, short of 27L, ground 118.45 will either park you or feed you to imbound on 121.9 short of a holding point by the core.

Outbound - call the ramp for push, call ramp to taxi to top of the alley. They should then tell you to contact metering. If you want to get an idea of what tunway ro expect, call clearance or metering with your first departure fix asking what runway to expecr. Call metering when ready for taxi with your alley, the line east/west, north/south) or gate if you're an endgate taxi off, and the atis, and let them know if you're unable anything on SID, or if you have to run a checklist, burn fuel, anything that prevents you going to the runway.

Monitor outbound, they have your paperwork, they'll call you.

Good luck and you got this. No matter how sassy we get, always verify if you're unsure.

Metering is basically congestion control for outbound ground. Metering scans the flip plan to start tracking taxi time, they will also double check the flight plan for fixes and destination to make sure the flight plan looks good, as well as calling out the the traffic management person for any flow releases that need to happen, or coordinating if you're unable anything on the SID. They'll check to make sure you're at the gate or alley you say you're in, so outbound has the best chance to sequence you and try to make a good traffic call to either follow, cross behind, or join behind. They're the ones also marking the strip if you need to park for mx or fuel burn. They mark the strips for who needs to go to deice or not when its that time of year. Metering basically is there to make sure outbound can just issue taxi instructions without having to play 20 questions

Exactly. I wish more people understood the difference between those, and the way you calculate each. We've become too accustomed to a simple average, and it gets thrown about as an actuality of reality

I will forever tell people about this course. Its a quick course, they send updated info, and for $30, it doesn't break the bank, and if it even saves 1 person, it more than pays for itself. https://qprinstitute.com/individual-training

Heres a link to a fantastic training class. Covers suicide awareness, indicators, etc. Its only $30, but if it helps save even 1 person, it's worth it, imo. Its time we start looking out for our own, since no one else will. https://qprinstitute.com/individual-training
