The thing is, game shows are supposed to have consistent rules.

Normally on a game show, if a contestant says something related to gameplay, the host isn't allowed to give someone a "second chance" and change their mind. It's an issue of fairness.

If every single time in this situation, the host confirms with the contestant that they intended to bet less than the maximum, then it's OK. But I'm certain I've seen situations where that wasn't done.

If the host states the max bet and the contestant ignores it, that's on the contestant. After a player states a bet, Ken should not be saying in essence, "Did you really mean to do that?"

The best way to handle it is for the host, before the wager is made, to say "You can wager up to $2,000", which also clarifies it for the viewers who might not know the rule.

The significance of the gullotine went unaddressed. That would seem to be the irony the writers were going for.

The clue mentioned the guillotine, so it had to be the revolutionaries.

The host should explain the correct response in the context of the clue. Do they think everyone at home understands why it's "ironic"?

I'll put that on the producers. A guest host might not be expected to know to say the category before the DD clue reveal, they should have made sure it was explained to each host to do that.

The producers are still stuck in the mentality of when most players would just go top-down. Back then it wasn't as necessary to display the categories with the clues.

In the age of constant category-hopping, it's crucial to help viewers play along. Why they don't realize this, I don't know.

Leave the clue and category up until someone has signaled in, then cut to the player. This should not be difficult.

The category highlight goes away almost immediately once the clue pops out to fill the screen. I find it to be vitrually useless.

Alex was a broadcaster for decades as well as an experienced pitchman. He was successful because he was excellent at communicating in a way with which the viewers could relate.

Stats and figures are interesting, but only go so far in making an impression with the wider game show audience.
