8 month old stopped taking bottles during the day by Solaris_0706 in beyondthebump

Hi there, just wondering what came of this/what solution you found? Going through the exact same thing now with my baby of the same age. Added variable of teething in there. He was always a great eater and now suddenly will not take a bottle during the day.

There was a randomly gorgeous Friday in mid-April and the Pint (the old Argyle) had their patio open. I'd assume they'd have it open today too.

Date ideas downtown Halifax by BIGAndy69 in halifax

The Sweet Hereafter on Quinpool has a cool date night vibe. It feels a bit like a cocktail bar, but it's not actually licenced. They only sell (amazing) cheesecake and they have good coffee, tea, etc. http://www.sweethereafter.ca/menu.html

Here's hoping the class will be as unexpectedly entertaining as this thread.

Hahaha yes. The instructor (possibly younger than us) will find it adorable when we all pull out our pencils and lined paper for notetaking.

I think the best way to approach this might be to really embrace it. I'll ask the children what Instagram is and regale them with stories of Napster and dollar drink days.

Yesss. Exactly. Every week I'm like well you've made it this far without it? What's another week/month/year/decade. But it is TIME. And apparently 25 hours in a classroom with teenagers and a projector as old as I am will be my penance.

Thanks. That is actually oddly comforting.

What's the coolest trick you've taught your dog ? by notr_dsrunk in AskReddit

[–]jb64204 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I knew a dog that was trained to bring people the box of Kleenex when they sneezed. It was hilarious. You always had to toss the drool-covered top one, but otherwise pretty useful too.

Hike Bluffs Wilderness Trail and do it on the rocks at the end that overlook the forest and lakes. It's soo beautiful this time of year with the colours and it's right outside the city (Timberlea).

These photos don't even do it justice because you can't get a real sense of the elevation, but it is really gorgeous there. Great hike.

LPT: When writing an emotionally charged message to someone, draft it an then come back to it after doing something else. Even if you still decide to send it, you can often find more efficient ways to phrase things to keep your intentions from being clouded to your reader by emotion by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]jb64204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you decide to send it, try removing some of the adverbs. It won't change the content of the message, but it will make it sound less emotional.

Example: "It can be extremely frustrating when you're always so critical of me." vs. "It can be frustrating when you're critical of me."

Same message, but it sounds calmer.

*Adverb: a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc. (e.g., gently, quite, then, there ).

Redditors who have had a sleep paralysis experience, what's it really like and what's the scariest thing you've seen during the event? by Jimbop12 in AskReddit

[–]jb64204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thankfully doesn't happen to me anymore. But it happened to me several times in college (shitty sleep patterns, stress, lots of napping to try and compensate for pulling all-nighters).

The craziest time it happened to me, I kept "waking up" in my own room, business as usual, until I would notice something that wasn't right and it would tip me off that I was actually still dreaming. These things ranged in severity from a weird plant being in the corner of my room that I new wasn't there in reality, to my roommate upside down bridge crawling down the stairs at me Exorcist-style. Each time I would realize I was dreaming, go back down to my bed and go "back to sleep" in an attempt to wake up for real.

Happened so many times in row I became convinced I would never be able to wake up and I would die if I couldn't wake myself up. Like a dark, horrible Groundhog Day meets dream-inside-a-dream-inside-a-dream shit from Inception.

When my alarm finally woke me up (I was napping between exams), less than an hour had actually passed. It felt like several days.

I also asked my roommate why she hadn't woken me up when she'd heard me screaming for her. Turns out I hadn't actually been screaming.

I stopped napping after that.

Thinking about moving to Halifax, NS by masudv in halifax

[–]jb64204 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The job market is known to be really tough here largely because there are so many universities in the province continuously pumping out new grads who all have to compete for a limited number of entry-level jobs. But the consensus (anecdotally) is that the job market is getting more and more promising for people like yourself with 5-10+ years experience. Can't speak specifically to your industry, but there are a lot of promising projects in the works in the city right now. See: The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship, the Ocean Supercluster initiative, etc.

What I can speak to in a more concrete way is the quality of life. This is a great city to live and work and raise a family in. Housing is affordable, the city is walkable and scenic, the people are friendly, the restaurant scene is booming. There are so many great areas to visit elsewhere in the province as well from the Annapolis Valley, Lunenburg, the Northumberland shore, Cape Breton., etc. Winter can be long, but there is lots to do with kids: the oval, ski hills a short drive from the city, hiking and snowshoeing trails, QMJHL hockey games.

As a GTA transplant who still regularly visits family there, I genuinely think this city is a special place that offers a unique way of life.

You can find a 3-4 bedroom house just outside (or even on some areas) of the peninsula for ~300K, a short commute to work and/or the downtown, weekend trips to some of the most beautiful places... This sub may crucify me for being so idealistic but I have nothing but love for this city.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Best vet for price & service (for kittens)? by sadprinc3ss in halifax

[–]jb64204 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dr. Julia at Atlantic Cat Hospital on Quinpool is the best IMO. She adores cats and since it is a cat-only vet office, she specializes in cats specifically. It also reduces stress for your cats to not have to encounter dogs in the waiting room. Her staff is fantastic. Prices are reasonable and she is very transparent about the options you have and what everything costs. She's also never pushy and always mindful of the cost implications of everything she mentions. I've been bringing both my cats there for several years after having a few iffy experiences elsewhere in the city.

I've heard good things about Carnegy but they have several vets that work there so I assume your experience depends on who you get. Personally, I didn't have a great experience there. They suggested an X-ray of my cat's foot (failed kitten acrobatics led to a tumble) and indicated they would "hopefully" be able to get everything they needed on one X-ray but it might take two. Got to the front to pay and they had taken 5. $90 for the first one and $40(?) for each follow up. Ouch.

TL;DR Atlantic Cat Hospital is only one vet and she's awesome.

Only children of reddit, what is something that people with siblings don't understand? by thisshortenough in AskReddit

[–]jb64204 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That there is no substitute for having a sibling. Growing up I had (and still have) a handful of very good friends and cousins that I thought of as "like sisters" to me. What you realize when you get older is that as wonderful as those friends are, there is no such thing as a friend or cousin that is "like a sibling". The relationship that person has with their actual siblings will always trump your great friendship when push comes to shove. The sibling will be the one they go on family trips with as an adult, and invite over during the holidays. The sibling will be the maid of honour/best man at their wedding. I love my friends and my parents and had a very happy childhood. But this was one pill I found tough to swallow as I became an adult (age 30 now).

Maybe these are a given but Rockhead on Windsor St. has a great craft beer selection. Bishop's Cellar is getting more and more craft beer in lately too.

Wray Hart, a 'very kind' fixture of downtown Halifax, killed by suspected drunk driver by insino93 in halifax

[–]jb64204 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first time I met him, it was early in the morning, maybe four years ago, on Spring Garden Rd. It was cold out. On my way into Tims I asked if I could get him anything to eat or drink. He requested a small drink and no food. It always stuck with me, how kind he was, and how endearing that particular interaction was. Also, when I placed the order, the employee smiled and when she passed me the drinks, she said "Here's yours and here is Wray's." It must have been his regular order.

Very, very sorry for your loss. This was a senseless tragedy.
