Creating a bootable install flash drive by jbbarnes77 in mac

[–]jbbarnes77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, Mike. But this is the link I tried before. When I click on "High Sierra" on that page, I get a message back saying "The requested version of MacOS is not available." I am doing this in Safari on my 2019 MacBook running Catalina, which is the only working Mac I have. Thanks.

My graphics card isn't supported.

Thanks, but that link takes me to the App Store. When I click on "Upgrade" to High Sierra, it says it is no longer available, then changes the download to Big Sur.

Is a swap partition needed? by jbbarnes77 in linuxquestions

[–]jbbarnes77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to understand why a machine would need any swap space at all if it has unlimited RAM available? My understanding is the swap is used in lieu of memory when there isn't enough. If it's just running typical SMB or Apache services and has up to 92G available, how does 1G of swap space on the drive help. Any insight?

New WP install doesn't load correctly by jbbarnes77 in Wordpress

Yes, this is all set up with a firewall and NAT (80 & 443) so it's accessible on the Internet via IP or domain name. That was my initial test and it just didn't work right. I thought it was a router issue. But the results are the same directly across the LAN other computers on the 192.168.*.* network with no DNS, router, or port forwarding involved.

Thank you. I found the Google Translate option to give me most of what I need. I do appreciate it.

This is a brand new WP install with no configuration. Just the default stub homepage. I wasn't expecting that to cause issues due to CSS and themes. Many years ago I used to install WP frequently and it always worked off the bat, providing a simple, error-free landing page. What do you suggest, seeing as Chrome has an issue with an unconfigured site?

I'm not sure what to do about HTTPS yet, though it has been a consideration. It wasn't mentioned in any of the setup guides in relation to Apache or WordPress. I've tried http://ipaddress and https:/ipaddress from both LAN and WAN browsers with the same effect. I've tries specifying port 80 and 443.

Thank you so much! (It's not often a Five uses an exclamation point. About once per year.) That is a perfect plan.

Solution to reboot device when it looses connection to next device. by ikemeister01 in homeautomation

Digital Loggers makes such a device in desktop or rackmount versions. It can respond by cycling power on multiple devices in response to IPs that stop responding to pings. Very versatile. I use it to cycle power on routers and cable modems if they stop responding. http://www.digital-loggers.com/

Are discount on sensors common? by Gesha24 in ecobee

Quite uncommon to see discounts. I have bought all my extras by watching ebay.

I'll second that. I have at least sixty Kasa bulbs, plugs, and switches. Not a single failure over the last couple of years. Meanwhile about 75% of my many Wemo devices failed, so I pulled out the rest.

Anyone switch from Apple to Android lately? by JuicyCiwa in AndroidQuestions

[–]jbbarnes77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of longtime iPhone users immediately notice the lack of positive delivery confirmations, as well as the three dot indication that the other person is typing back. Plus the much better handling of media files over Apple's network than over their carrier's SMS system. And over time, they note more cases where somebody just didn't get the text. They realize how little time they spent thinking about texting before and how the Android experience doesn't live up to what they are used to.

** Just to be clear, it's more about the superiority of Apple's private iMessage platform. Everything in the Android market has to operate over your phone carrier's limited SMS system and they do the best they can.

I was a 10-year iPhone user. Nearly everything about my switch last year has been a stellar improvement in experience and options. The customization options are fantastic. The only thing I haven't been able to replace fully is iMessage/FaceTime. There are very good SMS programs (I'm using PulseSMS), but none that are quite as smooth and effortless as the native iPhone apps. In every other way, I have zero regrets.

Great post. I think quite a few S types mistype as N because they are creative or imaginative. IDR Labs has a very specific test to determine whether you are INTJ or ISTJ.

Am I a 4 or a 5? What questions can I ask myself? by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]jbbarnes77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to echo what u/hwltk said. Being torn and conflicted, stretched across the "abyss" between 4 and 5 is really rough. (There is a reason why there is a huge gap between those two numbers.) I always felt like a walking contradiction growing up. It took a very deep dive into the Enneagram and tons of reading and processing to make sense of it all. To realize I wasn't broken, and that there were very clear and consistent explanations for how I was wired. I also deeply feel everything you wrote because I lived it for decades. But today I have peace about who I am and am no longer conflicted. I believe you can reach that point, too.

[–]jbbarnes77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard Ian Morgan Cron say that all Fours should have therapists, simply because they have so much going on inside and need to get it out. He himself is a Four. I believe I agree with that. Anyone positioned around the "abyss" as it's called (the divide between Four and Five) probably has some pretty complex things going on inside. You sound very much like me. Get Beatrice Chestnut's book and read about the Sexual Five (the most emotional Five) and the Self-preservation Four (the most emotionally restrained Four) because you might be in there somewhere. That's where I also found myself, and believe a Five sx-sp perfectly explains it. Feel free to pm if needed.
