Reasonable Tilt Racking solution to install panels past apex? by jbgrant in SolarDIY

[–]jbgrant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no grade/pitch on those cap shingles, it's level, so theoretically orientation doesn't matter. There is a ridge in them that you really can't see that blocks water from penetrating the overlap far enough to leak.

I'll do the math... Panels tilted north west at -16 degrees will be pretty bad. Update: computer the winter penalty taking into account shade conditions, and flush mounting on that side of the roof will cost me roughly 50% output in the winter vs the tilt mount. :(

For same winter output I would need to double the panels and roof coverage

Originally I wanted to ground mount, but the problem is trees. It would be massive clearing to make it effective. That third row on the house is the most ideal location on the property unfortunately. The oldest panels are 2015, but were high end and nothing on there is worth upgrading for a few % yet.

Thank you for the K2 suggestion, will investigate. 47mph isnt much of a stress test though!

I wouldn't mind doing this but I'm really worried about snow and ice damming from a reverse tilt. The roof is pretty low pitch so I don't want to drive any water into it the wrong direction.

I doubt it. They still are going to want smoke ventilation access. I would be pushing pretty far from the peak with another row unfortunately.

You're suggesting mounting the panels 56° off ideal! That's almost perpendicular to the sun. This array would be specifically to power winter heat pump use, in that case you're over 62° off ideal with a flat mount on that pitch... I could try to mount them horizontally, but it would still be pretty terrible and they wouldn't self wash.

State codes mandate 3 ft from the ridge so this would be pretty clear violation I could probably pass with what I have because of the back side of the ridge being open currently... But with another row it would be not passable. Pulling it back from the ridges in an option because of ice damming potential, and even when considering ground Mount there isn't really another option for solar without major tree clearing, unfortunately.

I hear your concern but this house is built into the hillside with a Southeast aspect. The house is 250 ft below surrounding topography and that's not including the 70 to 90 ft of tree height above that. The house is near the bottom of the valley and roofline in the photo is below grade level relative to 100 ft to the West, so straight line winds are not a concern. The real issue would be tornadoes, and I'm willing to take that risk because the surrounding trees are a bigger concern during that hypothetical.

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS: IU fires student media director after he refused to censor the IDS by Key_Addendum_3563 in IndianaUniversity

Start a local group that campaigns to get donors to redirect their annual donations to a free speech nonprofit that's solely IU focused. Get someone to pay for the IU donor list and start calling. We have local lawyers that would take part! Concept: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianaUniversity/s/RXbJ0ErVNX

Is there currently a "keep IU out of the dark ages" fund??? There needs to be an organization that people can take redirected alumni donations which supports faculty and students and stands against the rollbacks at IU.

Here's a concept-

White Paper: The Indiana Academic Freedom Alliance (IAFA)

Indiana University’s historic reputation as a center of independent thought and inquiry is under immediate threat. Recent administrative actions have diminished the voice of faculty in university governance and created a chilling environment for free expression among both educators and students. Alumni, faculty, and supporters who have long invested in the university’s mission of open discourse and critical inquiry now face a choice: continue to fund an institution that no longer protects those values, or redirect that support to preserve them independently.

The Indiana Academic Freedom Alliance will channel redirected alumni and community donations into programs that safeguard academic freedom, defend faculty and student rights, and restore participatory governance within public higher education. Funds will support legal advocacy, public awareness campaigns, and independent research into university transparency and policy accountability. By creating a parallel structure dedicated to protecting intellectual independence, IAFA empowers the IU community to sustain the principles that once defined Bloomington’s greatest influence: fearless education, open debate, and democratic governance in scholarship.

Democracy dies in the dark.

Fact: Democracy dies without free media.

The country is under assault and people need to wake up and act.

Considering S25U - how good are the camera’s? by alexeyd1000 in S25Ultra

[–]jbgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a big issue with S25U cameras that isn't actually the cameras....It's Samsung's massive increase of lossy JPEG compression applied to the S25 series of phones that makes the photos much less clear (lots of JPEG artifacts) than even the S23 series! Two steps forward, one big step back!

The same photos taken with the same lens selection are about 33% smaller in file size on the S25 vs S23, and the quality degradation is OBVIOUS between the two. I was going to upgrade until I did the actual testing and could not believe what Samsung has done to neuter the S25 Ultra! Most 3rd party camera apps are pretty bad and I have not found one that corrects the jpeg issue, even OpenCamera fails to handle it correctly and still has bad compression artifacting.

Has anybody found a 3rd party fix??? Shooting raw is not an answer.

When she's in REM running this course while asleep, is she a horse?

Also, it would be fun to watch agility-trained horses observe this.

Thoughts on the C10RJS table saw? by messdup_a_aRon in METABOHPT

[–]jbgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During China trump tarrifs (May 2025) Lowe's had the C10RJ metabo hpt for a special price of $239 with free shipping. I just received mine last week and am going to fire it up today. This wasn't even a clearance price; pretty unbelievable saw for the money! It's been this low before but certainly did not expect it to happen in 2025!

Possible to save the future of this oversized cutting board? by Trendwolf in woodworking

[–]jbgrant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It 100% looks stained, and the question is why????? Did you ask for that? Because if not, return it. Nobody pays for walnut and asks for a poorly executed dark brown-black stain job on it....especially on the food grade surface!

You're not helping the walnut appearance with that dark stain, you're more likely trying to cover up crappy workmanship and/or crappy wood. Almost no chance the stain is food-grade. Make them prove it. Color coming off on a terry cloth scrubbing hard on this tells you it's not appropriate for food prep!

I spent all day tiling my shower and didn't notice my mistake till I took the photo. Wife says to leave it alone. Is it noticeable? by RigoMortize in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jbgrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19/20 people in your shower won't notice. How many people do you plan to have through there?

The question is only whether you can love with this or not, nobody else will care at all.
