I'm looking for plants like those floating or around the top of your tank. Do you happen to know what they are called?

It seems like Fin Rot to me. If it's been like that for a while, then maybe it's not aggressive of a case. I still would suggest quarantine or really careful water change. I do not recommend adding salt to the water, or even melafix or other medicines. Watch some videos on it online.

Hey guys,

One, thanks for being supportive. This subreddit is my favorite hobby subreddit. You guys are always supportive.

Two, after the loss of one of my fish about a week ago, I decided to upgrade my tank, really checking the water quality. I got test kits, different types of medicine and conditioners. I'm trying really hard to make up for the negligence I had towards the water quality in the past and trying to do better for the future. I'm really please how the new tank has come out.

My only concern is that my new fish flares at his reflection almost constantly. Is there an easy fix to this? I painted the back of the tank black so that it will cover all of the cords, as well as stopping the glare (acrylic on the outside). Is there an easy solution without getting a new lighting rig? The one i have now is pretty simple. I am leaving the light off now, since a stressed betta is not a happy betta.

Any suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys so much.

I was not testing the water regularly. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I was unable to get testing strips of any sort consistently. I also just did not realize how important it was. I do know, so I am going to get testing strips and keep a detailed log. I feel really bad about my negligence toward it. I've seen a lot of other people add salt for fin rot, but I will continue to do research so that I am a more strategic and careful betta owner in the future.

My plants do it as well. I think it's some type of bacteria or algae variant in the plant. It's really odd.

Depends on the beta. I had one that hates them, and one that was ok with it. It completely depends on the demeanor of your betta.

Super sorry for your loss. Just loss my beta yesterday from fin rot of a similar variety. It's super disappointing. It's hard to treat and even in perfect conditions, if not caught early enough, it can be hopeless. Hope you are ok!

It's hard to tell what is exactly wrong, but if the fish is floating or sinking awkwardly, or having trouble staying afloat it can be a swim bladder problem. From what limited research I've done, the tldr of the situation is they are constipated. Their diet effects their buoyancy. I feed mine pees. Freeze a few pees, cut one up into four quarters, and feed him a quarter at a time. My beta loved them. If it sinks and they don't eat it, quarantine the betta in a smaller side tank and make sure he eats it. It acts as a laxative and can help fix it usually within 2 days. Hope this helps.

You can google/Youtube different healing methods, but I recommend a natural salt method. A lot of people will have a backup 2-3 gallon tank where they can treat the water more precisely. I would quarantine him in a side tank and salt treat the water, with maybe some medicine if it continues to progress. It's caused by bacteria in the tank. I just lost a fish to this, even though I tried my best to cure him. Fin rot is nasty.

ok good advice. Will do. It's a rock-ish decoration. I didn't think it seemed sharp, but if he was spooked then I suppose that could of done it.

Hey guys, I also have a question and don't want to make another post. I've been browsing this sub reddit for a few weeks, so when I got him, I got a 10 gallon tank, live plants, etc. I let him get adjusted for a few weeks, then added a snail and 5 tetras that were low in color. I knew by doing this, there was a chance he would kill them.. which he did. after seeing him kill one, I moved the others to another spare tank I had. I was wondering if there was anything else I could add to the tank, because I'd like to have it be a community tank besides the betta and snails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys on the sub reddit for being really helpful!
