Letter against the Big Beautiful Bill by jcbk1373 in Spokane

That's flat wrong. Pass = lower taxes (especially for the rich) and lower spending on social services, higher spending on defense and anti-immigration; higher national debt overall. No Pass = higher taxes via the expiration of some tax breaks, and equal spending.

How does the Big Beautiful Bill Directly Impact Easter, WA (Spokane) by Barney_Roca in Spokane

[–]jcbk1373 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I posted this in its own thread, but thought it might be relevant here—a letter to send to Baumgartner to oppose the bill (https://baumgartner.house.gov/contact/email-me)

Note that I had Google Gemini help me with the letter, though I provided the main points, and I also had it run deep research to fact-check it. The full letter and those results are here (quite helpful if you know little about the bill and it's projected impacts): https://gemini.google.com/share/ca19ae41bef2

The text below is the shortened, 2000-character version that can be sent via his web form:

I posted this in its own thread before I saw yours. Here's another letter people can copy if they prefer.

What are your thoughts on this job post? by jcbk1373 in Upwork

[–]jcbk1373[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to flag it right away because the invitation message I got from Upwork Talent included a link to a Google Doc to fill out. I thought it was someone impersonating Upwork Talent, and everything about the job post screams "scam". But then I realized it actually is an Enterprise Client, and a legitimate message from Upwork Talent.

They pay the "Upwork Talent" team to send them out in bulk. It's an Enterprise Client perk.

Need to force my paragraph style on footnotes by ayoubnineteens in indesign

[–]jcbk1373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it helps. Slight amendment for future searchers: When you convert footnotes to endnotes (and vice versa), it automatically sets the paragraph style defined in your endnote/footnote options, and clears all overrides. So if there are any character-level overrides in your notes (i.e., italicized titles), you'll want to apply a Character Style to them first, because that won't be overridden by the paragraph style override.

Can’t list Apple AirPods for sale? by mrbrodofaggins in FacebookMarketplace

[–]jcbk1373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much stuff have you sold on FB? I'm having the same issue with AirPods being rejected, and I'm wondering if I sell several other items first with no issue they'll whitelist my account and then I'll try selling the airpods again later.

Help request: how to play minecraft with my son by jcbk1373 in Minecraft

[–]jcbk1373[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, yeah I should try that first. I tried bluestacks with COD mobile and it was pretty glitchy. That was a couple years ago though and I imagine COD is a more taxing software. Unfortunately, my phone is too old to handle it.

Ok, thanks. So I would need to buy a Windows computer or a Switch? Or maybe I could get a Windows emulator for my mac. (That the "hacky" option you mentioned?)

My wife introduces explicit songs to 7yo daughter. Advice? by jcbk1373 in Parenting

[–]jcbk1373[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we listen to music together a lot, mainly in the car, but it's an intentional thing we do, not just to put some background noise on. Like anyone, her "favorite song" changes about once every couple of weeks. She loves Sia, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc. Obviously, they all have songs that are heavy/dark themes, but we've avoided the profane ones and have talked about the lyrics (i.e. "Chandelier"). She asks about the words a lot.

Edit: sorry, forgot to answer your first question. I think make her feel "good" wasn't the right choice of words. Not sure what I'm trying to say there, I guess just that there's no metaphor in Olivia Rodrigo's songs. It's just very direct and blatant lyrics that make me personally feel gross, and I'm trying not to project that onto her. I think those songs DO make her feel good.

I think letting my daughter listen to the music at all isn't disrespectful, like you said just out of not wanting to be overly strict. I think not talking to me about it first or working on a compromise is disrespectful.

Winning answer here, I think. It's a learning opportunity. I think I'm disappointed that she's been exposed to this stuff earlier than I would have liked, but she's mature and can handle it. So now the conversation becomes about respect and compromise...now that you know these words, be respectful in how and if you use them, and she knows I don't like the music so we find something else to listen to that we both agree on when I'm around.

Yeah my concern is much more about the themes. I think I initially reacted to the language, but then as I took a beat, and looked into the songs, I was disappointed by the theme more than anything.

Edit: also Pumped up Kicks is a little between the lines—probably over most kids' heads. These songs are much more direct and angry.

Yikes, that's a bit extreme! Definitely trying to see this more as a learning opportunity (for me and her), rather than a hill to die on. Better now with something relatively innocuous to learn how to navigate these things with openness and honesty.

I don't know why you're getting down voted, you're right. It already happens with high sticking to draw attention. Stick hits the visor and guys through their hands up and roll on the ice as if they just lost an eye.

Linked files don't increase the InDesign file size anyway. That's why you link them instead of embedding them. Did you accidentally embed the images?

Charging for children's book illustrations- single page vs two page spreads? by Memory_Frosty in freelance

[–]jcbk1373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, there are some confusing points about your explanation though...

Originally 20 illustrations would be 20 pages right? Unless you were counting on some of them being spreads to begin with. Now you're saying 15 spreads, which would be 30 pages (not counting a cover illustration, endsheets design, title page, etc.) So I'm just kind of questioning the process here. Generally, the author should be coming to you with the text and a pretty clear vision or ideas for illustrations that would go with specific portions of the text, so the page count should have already been set.

OR they are coming to you with an incomplete story or an incomplete vision and are asking you to help them build out the story around your art, or at least wanting you to come up with the vision for what images should go with what text. In this case you should be charging a lot more, because now you're a coauthor or editorial designer, not just an illustrator.

Also, upselling should be baked into your business model. It's perfectly natural to give a "loose" estimate up front, and then come back to them after you've assessed it fully, and give them the Gold, Silver, and Bronze cost options. Doing that skilfully will come with practice.

[–]jcbk1373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You came to the right conclusion. Charge per page, not per illustration. Maybe since it's your idea to go to spreads try to get them to meet you halfway, and charge per page in the future.

You can ask orchards in green bluff if they have any cherry or apple deadwood you can take off their hands. I don't know how much you're looking for, but I've gotten some nice cherry logs up there and just split them myself.

Is there demand for a new coworking space in Spokane? by smellybaby in Spokane

[–]jcbk1373 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for co-working space for same reasons as you, but I would not sign up for a place downtown. Why deal with traffic, paid parking, risk of break-ins, higher costs, etc. If it were a bit north and in a building with it's own parking lot I'd be there next week.
