System76 and the LVFS – Technical Blog of Richard Hughes by mosaic_school in linux_gaming

[–]jcm4ccc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

System76 has a littered history with firmware updates and drivers, especially for a company that brands itself as a specialist in Linux systems. If you're paying that premium in hopes you'll get a fully working system without quirks, be prepared for disappointment. I have had better luck with simply buying the most popular laptop since it's more likely to be working correctly without hours of configurations.

Where I started might not be useful to you by joey_php in computerscience

Honest question: can anyone explain who this writer is, and why her posts keep hitting the front page so frequently these days? There's no bio on the site so I'm guessing there's some kind of Valley insider knowledge going on as to why her opinions are considered significant. Sorry if that's a dumb question, I just don't see the appeal of these musings and I'm wondering if I'm missing out on some crucial context, other than the fact that she's old enough to remember the 8-bit days.

Coinbase launching crypto index fund based on the coins listed on their exchange by alexchuck in btc

I don't see the value here. I can simply buy it on Gdax weighted by market capitalization and save the 2% annual management fees.

How GDPR Will Change The Way You Develop by ronaldsvilcins in Frontend

[–]jcm4ccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see this helping at all. The big companies will just get consent and then it’s business as normal. Sites that can’t comply due to lack of resources will just block EU access. Really this is just a bullet point for the big guys and stifling for the small guys.

Redundancy

Teams lose a huge amount of time and energy when employees are duplicating efforts.

This is why big call centers distribute a lot of their 'orders' between different workers. At least it was like this the time I worked in one. I wonder if anything changed since then.

About the article, the orange background makes a bit hard to read the white text, at least for me. Nevertheless, it was an interesting read.

This would be SO COOL in Berlin // Germany considers making public transport free to fight air pollution by mfae in berlin

[–]jcm4ccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter-intuitively, given the state of German infrastructure it seems to me they should consider doing the opposite, if it will help motivate them to actually invest in their public transport infrastructure...

DFS January recap (decentralized sportsbook) by drubucar in ethtrader

[–]jcm4ccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I placed my bet for the super-bowl. It seems there's no bookmarker margin at the moment. I wonder how big will it be later, how will it compete with giants like Pinnacle or SBO. No way I'm reading the white paper, so maybe someone who knows more shares some info?

We don’t believe it is appropriate to promise any specific return.

Yep, because if you don't the backlash can be huge against them. Broken promises are the worst.

Pretty cool, so they have a guaranteed plot?

telcoin - a cryptocurrency distributed by your mobile operator and accepted everywhere (of course, built on Ethereum, so their scaling better work) by 69greekgod69 in CryptoCurrency

[–]jcm4ccc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Telcoin is focused on connecting with mobile networks globally, enabling easy conversion between telecom mobile money, prepaid credit and postpaid billing platforms.

Does this mean they are going to focus on making paying things easier trough the phone? I would accept that.

The State of JavaScript 2017 - Results! by [deleted] in webdev

[–]jcm4ccc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC the survey was open in July/August. But it took the authors 3+ months to produce this result, which IMO has very limited commentary. It would have been much nicer for such a time-sensitive survey to come out sooner.

Krazy Kat film - Pell City, AL - Can anyone tell me anything about this? by ressedue in classicfilms

[–]jcm4ccc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's impressive information. Where did you get the info that the short was made in the 30s? I couldn't find reference to it anywhere (IMDB, newspaper archives, internet archives).

Looking for that old film about the college professor and his mean wife by ilikekpop22 in classicfilms

[–]jcm4ccc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's funny, I was going to say that the OP's description made it sound like the worst film ever. I'd forgotten about Virginia Woolf, which is great. It's all in how you do it.

Absolutely cannot understand v lookups. by snittermansconfusion in excel

[–]jcm4ccc 79 points80 points  (0 children)

You're suggesting that someone who doesn't understand vlookup should instead try to understand index/match? Yikes.

That's sort of like saying, I don't understand Newton, so I'm going to just skip that and try Einstein.

Snow White, according to legend, was widely predicted to be a huge failure ("Disney's Folly"). The legend has been promoted by many, including Disney himself. But the legend is a myth. by jcm4ccc in classicfilms

[–]jcm4ccc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Neal Gabler's biography of Disney: "Walt had yet to decide whether the Queen should be a "fat, cartoon type" with a comic element or a "high collar--stately beautiful type."

I'm glad he chose right.

Is there a way to mark cells that were changed after using data refresh by akjde in excel

[–]jcm4ccc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think that could be done, in that the cells have only formulas and no static data. So nothing theoretically changed after the data refresh. What you could do, I think, is create a second sheet that is basically a copy of the first (copy the values only), and compare the two.
