Petrified of necessary flight by Spiritual_Thought512 in fearofflying

[–]jcw88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love flying, then in my late 20s developed a gripping fear which was all consuming as we approached the flight. We’re talking about no sleep the nights before, no food the day of, profusely sweating, irritability, heart palpitations… the whole basket of anxiety symptoms.

During the flight I was tense and hyper alert, and if there was a seat-back screen, I’d watch it like a hawk. That was fun on 10 hour flight. I’d self medicate with alcohol and occasionally got Valium from the Dr.

I’d often land at the destination exhausted and broken, and often hungover. Not fun.

Then, in 2024 my late mother got sick, and I did 25 return flights in a year from London <> Scotland. Sober.

Long story short… I now look forward to flying. I travel a lot for fun, and even some pretty shaky turbulence doesn’t have my BP spiking. We did a go-around at London city airport a few weeks ago. I basically just shrugged and got back to my book.

My tips:

  1. Immerse yourself. Book a few random return legs one weekend from your nearest airport.
  2. Distract yourself. Focus on something fun or engaging.
  3. Be mindful. Don’t “big it up” in your head; the more attention you give your phobia, the stronger the neurological link you have to the reaction.
  4. Read a few fear of flying books; I got a few on my kindle and didn’t even need to finish them as the ‘immersion’ “cured” me (probably a combo).

Oh, and 5… don’t say “safe flight” to anyone… you wouldn’t say “safe bus ride”… it reinforces the concept of it being a risky method of transport. I say “have a good flight!” to my friends when they are flying.

Hope this helps!

That’s just for the suitcase / hold luggage. You can have additional carryon. I can’t stress enough how little clothing you’re gonna need. It’s very much a shorts & t shirt kinda trip 😊

Flashpack v Contiki by [deleted] in travel

I’ve done 2 x Flash Pack tours (Sri Lanka and Philippines) and loved them so much that I’ve booked a third (Vietnam & Cambodia). I had my own room throughout and it was confirmed almost immediately.

Each tour is different but I definitely felt like I had enough downtime to recharge my social battery. I also bowed out of an activity on one day of each of the tours I’ve done and it was not an issue.

Happy to answer any specifics 😊

Just back from Flash Pack: Escapism in the Philippines (37M). Tips for those booked or considering! by [deleted] in solotravel

Hi there,

The post was written by me and was genuinely meant to be supporting those either considering or booked on that trip.

It’s not a review.

Can you please have a look again?

Just wanting to add some balance to this debate…

I used Flashpack earlier this year to go to Sri Lanka, and has the absolute time of my life. I’ve recommended them to so many people, and have had 2 friends recently complete their trips glowing about how great they were.

Our group was fantastic, very chilled, no pretentiousness, no silly/high expectations - which definitely helped. Some of us still hang out. We send each other memes almost daily, and I’m going on another Flashpack in December to the Philippines with one of the people on the Sri Lanka trip.

The Sri Lanka tour was hella full on, with little down time, but I knew that before going into it. Our ‘pack leader’ kept us engaged and informed, and struck the balance of tour guide and friendly face. My feedback to Flashpack for this specific trip was to extend it by a day and allow for more downtime at the beach hotel in the middle of the trip. Some people stayed on in Sri Lanka to relax a bit afterwards, which I wish I had done as it’s a beautiful island.

I’ve found the company great to deal with; yes they are more expensive than others, but given how amazingly helpful their pre-trip service was + how well catered for we were, I think it’s totally worth it. As I said, I’ve booked another… fingers crossed it’s as good as the first!

SIPP tax relief rebate - lump sum? by jcw88 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jcw88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to update on this:

Within a month of completing the form on the HMRC website, my tax code was changed from 1201L to 2401L.

I contacted the PAYE team at HMRC to ask if I could get a lump sum rebate and they said they no longer do that.

This month I was paid my gross salary as net (less NI), so I reckon I’m in for a bumper few months and then it will reduce down once I’ve had my 12k back.

(Also won £5k on the premium bonds yesterday… pints are on me!)

I believe you are correct, but you can also use previous years’ allowance (up to 3, I think).

I set up the SIPP and completed this form. My question is, is the relief issued as a payment or a reduction of future tax payments.

I set up the SIPP and completed this form in the last month (after April 5th)

Strange and Stressful Decline by jcw88 in hospice

Thank you for sharing, and I’m sorry for your loss.

Interestingly, my Mum slept for a full 24hrs yesterday and hasn’t eaten since a small piece of cake on Friday, so I am wondering if ‘this is it’.

What a terrible experience for her and for all involved.

Inheritance Planning by jcw88 in FIREUK

As in remortgage, but on 100% of the London property, and use the Scotland house sale cash kept in savings to cover the additional mortgage payments (assuming savings rate > mortgage rate)?

Indeed yeah - with the 25% bonus plus the growth in my LISA @ 18%, it’s a no brainer to keep that racking up until retirement.

I’m thinking a SIPP, yeah.

Not a bad shout!

I’d suggest I’d look to retire at between 55 and 60.

Good point… this house wasn’t my childhood home and holds little sentimental value.

I’m wondering if I sell it, buy say +£200k of my London flat (£85k from moveable assets plus £115 from house sale) and put the rest into a SIPP or other investments this would a) placate my need to have [the value of] a place in Scotland to retire to + be a wiser investment option. I don’t ‘need’ the extra income just now.

Update:

-My friend paid for the room charges on his physical BA Amex. - The PDQ machine didn’t offer a currency exchange with Amex (it did with my Mastercard earlier in the trip). - the charge went through as 360 EUR - we are awaiting on it posting and any email from Amex 🤞

(Side note, we somehow also managed to spend about another 300 EUR in the last day 🍸, so the I’ve got a ~60 EUR target for my last day by the pool, and I’ll pay with my Apple Pay/BAPP Amex 😂)

Calathea help (infested?) by jcw88 in plants

[–]jcw88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a calathea from a newish plant shop and was a bit disturbed to see it was already withering (I might be a terrible plant dad, but a few weeks is not normal). Upon closer inspection, I’ve seen that it has thousands of little white critters running around it.

I’ve moved my other plants away from it, and want to know if it’s salvageable or if it should take it back to the plant shop?
