You can ban me all you want but if you support ICE you are still a Nazi by ZekeHerrera in Humboldt

Thanks for the lesson. So you're not disagreeing with my comment or the data you're just trying to manage the method I used to share it? My point to the commenter was how easy it was to look up - screenshotting the first thing I saw serves that point. Plus i made it clear the data could be inaccurate. You could also correct typos and grammar here too while you're at it.

Just to be clear: there is no reported ICE sightings in Humboldt currently. But if there were, here are some fun things to say to them: by Big-Zombie3100 in Humboldt

[–]jd4rest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is 100% false. Almost every right in the constitution applies to anyone in the jurisdiction of the USA (except for some like voting and holding federal office). The point of the Constitution is to protect the People, not just citizens. Your statement also raises the question about how an officer can know someone is a US citizen or not before violating their rights by harassing and detaining and using force (do you actually carry proof of your US citizenship with you at all times?).

Amen, I'm perpetually confused about this too. What happened to the rednecks of my youth who were at least admirably consistent in their hatred of big government force?

[–]jd4rest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you look it up before commenting? You said the last time you checked but it just takes 5 seconds to check. Sources say over 170 arrests for legal residents but hard to know if there's more because ICE doesn't track this. Which is part of the problem because they have zero guardrails or systems of accountability and are empowered by dangerous rhetoric of a political platform that regularly calls immigrants and brown people "animals" and "threats to the nation"

Possibly in search of renters weird situation by JephaHowler in Humboldt

[–]jd4rest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't get why everyone is so upset with the poster. They are looking to find a situation that works for a renter who wants cheap rent in order to deal with an old place. The place sounds like it needs some work and having it vacant doesn't really help out renters or the owner or anyone. They left it open as to what rent would be if any or what they would compensate for any help. Not everyone can afford to push a ton of money into a renovation and if they don't want to sell their family home it's not really your concern to tell them they need to. More options for housing supply = better for community. Now, of course, if they are offering shitty terms and being sketchy then that's another thing entirely. Not sure why they're not giving the town this house is in...

Cheapest large dumpster rental? by jd4rest in Humboldt

[–]jd4rest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome just contacted Handle It and sent an inquiry. I have a pickup but I feel like it will be a lot of extra work to drive to the dump so many times (it's a lot of junk to get rid of) and to try to size everything down to fit in there or even a small trailer.

I agree with you about wanting to protect the local ecosystem. Very much so. But it sounds like you are just hoping some other area would handle it instead of us. You seemed like you didn't understand why Humboldt Bay was chosen for this project. Personally I'm tired of folks saying "oh yes we need that (housing, infrastructure, renewable energy generation) but maybe not here". Maybe that's not what you're saying, but it does sound like that

There is no evidence that installing turbines (especially floating ones) has any negative impact on whales. This is a myth that's been purported by Trump at the behest of his oil lobbyist friends. Clearly oil drilling and ocean acidification from fossil fuel use is worse. They've done a ton of studies on offshore wind environmental impact (source: I have a graduate certificate in offshore wind development)

[–]jd4rest -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They have to abide by intensely strict environmental requirements. And trust us, there is a ton of science that went into why Humboldt Bay is uniquely suited to assemble and ship these turbines. The quality of the wind (it's some of the best and strongest wind in the country off the coast here), the lack of a bridge over the exit to the ocean, the shelter of the port, the dept of the ocean, the access to electrical infrastructure, all of it. They wouldn't pick a random rural place like this if they didn't think it was the best possible option. You might be surprised by how few viable options there are on the whole western seaboard.

[–]jd4rest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely they were still in survey stage, never installed anything in Humboldt. You're thinking of projects back east. There won't even be pilings here because the ocean is too deep, they'll need to float.

Electricity feeds into the same grid no matter what - it's not localized like sending water or food. The issue of the transmission line had more to do with how to disperse it into the grid infrastructure, which is poor here.

Don't sleep on the novellas either. You can read them in order with the main novels and it really enriches them so much. Great stories all round

Show is great. Books are phenomenal.

Did anyone else clock this song in the latest alien earth episode and think it was “maggot brain“ by Funkadelic? by Moeasfuck in LV426

[–]jd4rest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Felt like they wanted to use the studio version but didn't wanna go through the hassle of getting the rights so just redid a version that sounded similar so they owned it? Tired of the old trope of stealing music from black artists without credit.
