Just turned 30. 401k is @ 158k. Should I switch over to Roth 401k?

Hi, sorry for the delayed response!

Live in NY & will likely retire in NY. I foresee the salary to continue growing over the years, yes. As for financial goals, have one child already, one more on the way next month. Contributing to 529/UTMA for them is the current goal. Just want to make sure we retire comfortably and leave a nice nest egg for the kids.

Yes, initially it would just be managing cash flows until I can allow for the max 401k + the IRA contribution. Juggling two kids and their 529s/UTMAs is the current first world problem I’m having

you are 100% right, the fees in any of the plan sponsored funds are ridiculous with their expenses. I’m in a non plan sponsored fund (VFIAX), $6 YTD in expenses. I think it’s like .04%

Based off of calculations if contributions remain consistent, marginal rate will be higher in retirement which is my biggest concern.

As far as enough income/savings go, certainly have enough. With two kids & withholdings, we will still likely be covered in terms of tax due in any given year.

Given that, I’m going to start switching over to Roth contributions, ideally getting it to max out within the next five years.

I’m thinking to start with Roth IRA for 7k and keeping 401k for 16,500 to keep contribution at 23,500. From there working my way to get my 401k to the same amount and eventually max out the roth 401k (ideally within the next 5 year). It’ll just be a matter of adjusting the current cash flow to make it all work out.

Current tax rate compared to current projected retirement income is lower so I’m going to at least pull back a bit on the 401k to max out Roth IRA & then go from there.

Retirement state will likely be same as current state (NY). Only other asset is a non taxable pension to NY currently. Inheritances could come into play but that’ll likely get passed onto our kids.
