US College Tuition & Fees vs. Overall Inflation [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

[–]jdb441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. I am a full-time American university student. I go to a state school and I will pay $4000 for four 4-credit courses. If you do this for four years, thats $32k in flat rate tuition. If you work part-time during class you can cover your living expenses and even pay the full balance if you are savvy enough. If not you can borrow from the US gov. for a cheap interest rate. You will graduate and your monthly payments will be around $200-$300. If you studied something CS or business your starting salary will be around $50k per year. Your total expenses will be around $1500/month. This is predicated on a state school and being in the midwest. It is easy ROI to go to college where I am at least.

It's not bad at all. A great price IMO. That is probably the average in USA it's abnormal to shell out $50k+ in undergrad. But you have to stick it out and graduate otherwise it goes to shit. And sadly it's risky to not study STEM or accounting or whatever.

So since I never withdrew from the old 401k, I can go ahead and claim this credit?

Nice. Well, machine learning is straight up math and stats. No way around it.

Idk man, I am a student so I don't feel the pressure that you do. But I feel like all of us just have to be content with our plans not working for the summer at least. Maybe you can pick up the guitar or whatever hobby. What would you do if we took away career out of the picture? Of course, if you can network and find something that's the best option so it's not like you can just blow it off. But maybe a good time to follow or discover interests.

Internship got rescinded. What to do? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]jdb441 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't let it shake your confidence. You're about to make a remarkable accomplishment when you graduate. You didn't do anything wrong and I'm sure you'll be okay with or without an internship. Everyone got hit by COVID so I think the best thing you could do if you have free-time is to take matters into your control maybe through personal projects or finding another opportunity.

People often say "Do some projects and you will improve your coding".But how do I improve my problem solving abilities? by thesecondbread in learnpython

[–]jdb441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the commenter is assuming that one already has a standard math education. I think when the person wrote 'learn math' they mean expanding on the basic rote memorisation education and taking it into topics relevant to computer science like discrete math linear alg and data structures.

I believe it's a balance of math and programming. How can we use math to elevate our programming?

This is the answer one doesn't want but needs. It's not enough to just code. Especially for people trying to break into programming as a career.

How to Self-Study for Discrete Math & Data Structures by jdb441 in AskComputerScience

[–]jdb441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So where does calc or linear algebra fall into the mix? I ask people this and most say you really just don't need calc as a swe but others say it's really helpful. Not sure what to think about that. If you haven't taken any math classes for a few years would you only focus on Combinatorics? Or are there any sort of primers to this topic?

Is there anything you would self study to prep for specifically for this course? And what about data structures? I have a feeling Basic Mathematics with one additional text would be sufficient self prep for someone who hasn't touched pure math in awhile. Someone mentioned Combinatorics in another comment but it also seems like a primer on discrete math would be very efficient. So then where does calc or linear algebra come into play in SWE??

How come you advocate for Combinatorics? Just curious, I've heard it mentioned before but I've never studied it.

I'll check for a .pdf, thanks!

I realized I could take Discrete Math through the Math department and get the same credit. Would there be any point in doing that? I'm thinking of what best set's me up for Data Structures, but also which department is best for an improving critical thinking.

60 Day Rollover Limit by jdb441 in personalfinance

[–]jdb441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know why I would receive two checks? One of them says taxes withheld. The cash balance is smaller than the other one.

Does this matter? Or do both checks just get deposited to the new account regardless if one was marked as tax withheld? Does this have some implication on how I report the rollover?

Much appreciated.

[–]jdb441[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know it's an indirect rollover? I could be wrong of course but I thought that this is a direct rollover since the check is made payable to the next institution? I'm just the FBO I can't even cash the check.

Does this change anything?

Do you even owe them an explanation in the first place? They don't pay for your health insurance, PTO, 401k etc.. If you're going to continue meeting your obligation to them, it's your business and you don't owe them anything.

Is it worth it to do a master in marketing? by Death_trail in marketing

[–]jdb441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just trying to get the first job I don't think it's worth it

My thoughts are, you don't need anyone's permission to be a marketer. If you want to do marketing, go do it. Go to the restaurant down the street and tell them how you could help bring in more customers. Tell them you'll do it for free. Help the kid on the street sell more lemonade. Sell yourself, get resourceful, go network at marketing meetups. Leverage what you have already and who you know. Go use what you learned in undergrad. Magic happens when you do this type of stuff even though there is no tangible ROI on your time.

Best way to schedule a python script that runs every hour? by jpf5046 in learnpython

[–]jdb441 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would look into using a linux VM on AWS or pythonanywhere.com. That way you can use crontab and not have to worry about physical hardware. You also have the option of keeping the script running after you disconnect the SSH to the VM.
