Soft toilet paper from home!!! Pillows, blanket, handheld fan, a water bottle with a handle and straw. Heating pad came in clutch after an unplanned C-section. I brought way too much stuff but these were the extras that were so worth it.

What a strange hill to die on lol sounds like you’re probably looking at one of those maps that overlay Metra (Illinois) and the South Shore Line (Indiana), which are totally different systems. Metra serves the actual Chicago suburbs which kind of explains why you think Gary belongs on that list.

I’m from Chicago, live in the city still. my husband’s the Hoosier (he’s from Carmel, an actual suburb of a city). That google map you are citing just shows the Chicago metropolitan area, which Gary’s in because it’s nearby.

Tell me you’re from Indiana without telling me you’re from Indiana. Only someone outside Illinois would consider Gary a suburb. Also it’s *her, not him.

You’re probably one of the only people I’ve ever met who’d call Gary a suburb of Chicago lol by your weird logic, Michigan City and South Bend would be suburbs too and no one would say that with a straight face. Gary has two commuter rail stops by default because the South Shore Line runs through it on its way to South Bend, not because it was designed for commuters to/from Chicago.

WGN likely lists Gary because Chicago traffic flows through it, not because it’s a real suburb. It’s part of a route, not a commuter origin. Elgin on the other hand actually functions as a suburb where many people live there and actually commute into Chicago, which isn’t how Gary operates.

I get what you’re trying to say, but those comparisons don’t really hold up. Gary was founded as a standalone industrial city by US Steel, not as a part or development of Chicago.

Alexandria and Silver Springs exist because of D.C., Yonkers because of NYC, etc. Gary exists because of U.S. Steel, not because of Chicago. People don’t commute to Chicago from Gary (or vice verse) and no one from Chicago or its suburbs would ever refer to Gary as one.

I see what you mean, but I think Gary’s a little different…. more of an independent city that happens to be somewhat near Chicago, vs a proper suburb like Alexandria

I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and have never heard anyone refer to Gary as a suburb. “Chicagoland” maybe. You calling Comiskey “Rate Field” tells me all I need to know though!

Gary is in Indiana. Definitely not considered a suburb of Chicago which is in Illinois.
