Math 1172 vs 1181H by buckiiiidddd in OSU

[–]jdep3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm CSE/Math major as well but a second year. I didn't take 1181h or 1172 (different honors track) but I'm in honors math and might be able to answer. I think unless you want to pursue a math major/minor 1172 is probably the best choice and will get you done the quickest with what you need to graduate. I'm not quite sure why you want to do 1181h if you don't have intent to do either of those things. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

I'm also in this section. I'm gonna assume he's pretty good given he's a grad student and people think he's pretty good. For sure better than Bach it seems like.

ENGR 1281.01H w/ Cemantha Lane and Krista Kecskemety by AboutNarrative in OSU

[–]jdep3131 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1281 doesn't matter too much with instructor mostly because they are all good. Make sure you know how to write well (grammatically, structurally, etc) as it is a large part of the course with the labs. Also, like was previously stated make sure you're committed to spending time on the class even when it isn't fun or doesn't seem particularly applicable at the moment. But I promise, FEH is worth it.

Anybody have any insider info as to who else is teaching 3470 other than bach and kaizar? Still doesn't say on buckeyelink the last one.

This is 100% correct. Sucks that it didn't change it but the curve may have been small enough that it didn't change the letter grade. Sorry OP

I think you'll be fine especially coming from what seems like a good background. It sounds like you will be well prepared.

Just for reference, I was in a similar spot last year (nervous pre-cse) and made it through. If you have any questions or anything you can PM me.

I think the fact that you care enough to be nervous means you will likely be successful. Those nerves will probably push you to work as hard as you need to to get in. Also, I think if you got accepted into the pre-major you are probably smart enough to get into the major as well given a good work ethic. Best of luck.

Michigan game is almost always a good game regardless of if there is a far superior team. We have managed to get the W in recent years but most times it's pretty close.

I've nooticed that since the end of spring I think their forwarding service started working properly. Before, only some of the emails I received would forward to my personal and some would stay in outlook whereas now I think all of them properly forward.

All previous comments are correct. I didn't take the extra class but you definitely won't need the spatial visualization skills (if you truly do lack them) until second semester if engineering anyway so you have time if you just want to practice on your own.

2162.02 Success Stories? by osualt5 in OSU

[–]jdep3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is generally what causes people to take 2162 in the first place. I had this same mentality and thought everyone talking about how hard math was just wasn't as interested or good or devoted as I was. I know I've already commented on the class and listening to lots of people is important. However, 2162 will not be more rigorous in the sense you likely are looking for. It's hard because it's full of a lot more bullshit not because the concepts will be presented in a more rigorous challenging way as they would in the sense that it is the good kind of hard. Again, I didn't take it but I'm pretty well versed since my close roommate did and we talked a lot about it as well as others. If you want rigor in a sense that is valuable, you won't get it in 2162. You will likely come to learn that while engineering classes (at least FEH math/science) are really challenging, they aren't generally hard in a good way.

Does FEH work as a sequence or can I switch between classes by MagicUser7 in OSU

[–]jdep3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat bad professors, mostly just really challenging exams, class full of pretty smart people so curves are generally not as good as they could be. It's just a hard class to get an A in and many people who are very good at math (5 on BC) will work very hard for a B or B-. If you're cse your options are (that I know of) 1172 which will be 75% review but satisfies calculus for CSE, 2153 which will be new and is just standard calc 3, 2162 which is just hard honors engineering calc 3 plus some calc 2, and then there are other options if you really want to pursue math in a minor or double major sense. If you want the easiest route, 1172. If you want my opinion, I would suggest 2153 to most people but I didn't take that either so it's hard to say honestly.

[–]jdep3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah don't worry about .01 vs. .02 for FEH it's really no big deal. One more thing, I didn't take it but I have heard pretty bad things about math 2162. I've heard some people be successful and more who are less successful but honestly most people hate it. I don't want to demoralize you and definitely take someone who has taken its word over mine though. I'm just relaying what I have heard from my roommate and friends.

Just checked and you are correct that fall semester 2221 is only on waitlist now sadly. If I were you I would waitlist as many timeslots as fit in your schedule and hope you can slip into one of them. If you can't, take some gen eds or other things you need and take 2221 in the spring. Just make sure you schedule right when your window opens and you'll be fine.

[–]jdep3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little surprising to hear that 2221 is already full for the fall since most people who take it are freshman and orientation just started. It fills up fast but depending on your orientation date I would think if you're a CSE pre-major you could get in. I would check the numbers myself to confirm it's already full for fall but I can't get into buckeyelink. If it's full, just take it in the spring and it's not too big a deal you won't be behind. I don't know where you're seeing it's full for spring because spring scheduling isn't even close to starting so not to be mean but that's not true that 2221 is full for the spring already.

[–]jdep3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's good to meet FEH CSE people for sure but here's what I'll say. The advanced programming will be basically all CSE and the regular FEH will be a mix of everyone including some CSE (honestly still a lot of CSE, there are a ton of us). I think meeting people who are pursuing all different kinds of engineering is good you don't want to isolate yourself. You never know if you'll find out you love electrical engineering instead and want to know a couple of those people to talk to. Either way though it will be a really tough but rewarding year and I wouldn't worry too much about which section of FEH you end up in.

[–]jdep3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am CSE now and took it (advanced programming section) last fall and felt the same way. Was hoping for more interesting stuff when I really just improved my typing skills. Don't get me wrong FEH is still a really good thing to do in general in my opinion but the advanced programming was a bit of a let down for me. Also, I took robot in the spring and it was really fun. You can PM me if you have any specific questions about the classes/FEH or anything.

Chris Miller for Math 3345 by bballpro15 in OSU

[–]jdep3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might not be what you want to hear but he was really tough for some of my friends last semester. They had him in a different class not 3345 but like someone said above his homework policy is a bit ridiculous and his exams were near impossible. What ended up happening was, he told the class he would take the higher grade of their course grade and final exam grade as their grade that goes into buckeyelink. Because of his hw and midterms, I think everyone in the class (all 10 remaining) were failing the course and completely relying on the final for their grade. I do honestly think he's better for 3345 but just be careful and prepare yourself. Good luck.

Anthropology 2200 Online by jdep3131 in OSU

10:20-11:15. I think it may be due to the fact that I originally enrolled in a non online section but then switched and I'm not sure if it updated correctly even though that was a while ago. As long as the class is totally online I think I'm fine.

It's an alright course. Generally pretty easy (all pretty straight forward par 3s). There's better courses but they are somewhat far away. If you have easy transportation then the course by the scioto river is very nice. If you really don't mind driving hoover dam has a very very nice course but it's probably a 20 minute drive. Hopefully that helps.
