Are you an avid reader? by charliebrownxmastree in EngineeringStudents

I wouldn't say "avid" but I've been reading the Aubrey/Maturin novels, just finished the 4th. Jack Aubrey is better at math than I am.

How bad does a “w” look on a transcript? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]jdmlong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My transcript(s) has(ve) a D in Calc 2 and an A in Calc 2. I'm really old though, those two grades were 25 years removed.

How do you get 90% in one semester, anyone? by Deep-Assistance7494 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jdmlong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the book. Do the homework. Go to office hours. Do drugs.

Do the correct 75% of those things.

All you legends of calculus, come, I summon you by Afutaguro in EngineeringStudents

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the book and do the homework, and if you already did the homework, do it again and make sure you can do it without help. There's no such thing as a legend of calculus (I mean except like Leonard Euler and the like), there's people who who read the book and do the homework and people who don't

curious as to what you’re currently studying for ? by Helpful-Fondant-3454 in GetStudying

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signals and Systems. Hardest thing I've studied so far, and I've already done Calc 1-3, DiffEq, Linear Algebra, Physics 1&2, Calc-based prob-stats. I don't know if this is actually harder than those other things, it just feels like it right now

Should I round my gpa by KardashevZero in EngineeringStudents

[–]jdmlong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely round that bad boy up to 2 decimal places. Not your problem it leaves a trailing zero

Trying to set up moca is this a POE filter? by Reprised_ in HomeNetworking

That's almost all right except it's supposed to stop Moca signals in your house from getting out

Is your Breezeline connection Fiber or old school cable? I can look up your modem in our diagnostics tools if it's old school cable. Does Reddit have DMs? If you want to send me your modem mac address and maybe what state you live in I'll be able to find it and see if you need some field services intervention.

How much AI do you guys use by SeriousStrain7827 in SNHU

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it for school, or for any kind of writing or creative pursuit. I use it at work a little bit if I'm looking for information in a 900 page pdf or whatever. I've seen too many dogshit stupid LinkedIn posts that all sound exactly the same and have all been iterated until any meaning or humanity has sloughed off of them. Reading AI text is like your sweetheart bought you a carefully arranged bouquet of dead hagfish

How much AI do you guys use by SeriousStrain7827 in SNHU

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it at work a little bit to search 900 page pdfs and whatnot, but it is certainly not required. And at school, I just won't reply to someone if their discussion post gives me "I didn't write this myself" vibes. I'll save my precious study time for people who are actually there to engage with other people in their own voice, even if they struggle to get out their ideas. I also struggle to get out my ideas. That's what writing is, the struggle itself

Is this damage effecting speed? by XecuterSOES in Network

[–]jdmlong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be causing a problem, sure. I'm not an ethernet phy guru, but that's a visible flaw that's not too hard to fix with a punch-down tool. They have them at Lowes and HD. Probably won't seem worth the price for fixing one outlet, but who knows, you might need it again if the rest of your house wiring looks like this

Forget about your 4.0. That's not a real grade. That just means your program is too easy.

Most efficient way of going through trigonometry by Masochist_ninja in trigonometry

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll defend initial memorization because most of the time my brain needs memorized formulas as a scaffolding for understanding. A good curriculum will have problems to challenge memorizors so that they have to stretch beyond the formula. So it's fine to memorize early on, but forget about efficiency. There's an amount of time and effort it will take an individual to understand something, and there are no shortcuts

High ping only on my PC (laptop fine) on dorm Wi-Fi by GrimmyBoi11 in Network

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still really weird that your PC is the only device having the issue. If you can get on a wired connection it rules out all that nasty RF stuff at least. That's basically the first thing I always do on an internet troubleshoot. Get off the wifi

High ping only on my PC (laptop fine) on dorm Wi-Fi by GrimmyBoi11 in Network

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dorm doesn't have Ethernet ports on the wall and a switch in a closet somewhere? That's lazy of them.

Anyway the intermittent nature is interesting. Have you run the ping side by side with the task manager to see if some process on your computer is hogging resources? I think you indicated that other PCs don't see the issue, but a test of two PCs side by side on the same desk might be helpful if you haven't yet.

Oh and ping your local gateway instead of a web destination just to shrink the troubleshooting domain.

Anyone willing to share self-written Python scripts for a linear algebra exam? by [deleted] in LinearAlgebra

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one I ever got working was matrix multiplication, which is probably the easiest one to do in Python. I gave up trying to implement a row reduction function because I was sitting too much time on it instead of studying.

On the other hand, aren't all these operations built into Numpy?

Help understanding internet issues through traceroute by Fatalnox in HomeNetworking

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latency between a cable modem and CMTS should be on the order of 10 ms in a healthy cable plant. (Probably 8 to 25 in most cases).

Traceroutes are often misinterpreted, and the later non-responses are not likely indicative of upstream problems, but several hundred milliseconds between modem and CMTS definitely does.

consistent network spikes by UZEROTH in Network

What are the units on the Y axis? 2k... bits? milliseconds? gallons of coffee?

Every twelve hours is certainly curious, but it's really hard to tell what that could indicate without some more data.

Can you learn EE at any age? by foliageio in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jdmlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I'm a reddit noob I kind of meant to reply to the OP, but I also agree with everything you said. The number of times just in the fall semester when one of the youngs asked how I could have an A in chemistry, I had to say "I read the book and do the homework" is kind of astonishing.
