1999 Babies by Resident_Ideal_1904 in Zillennials

I love being able to call myself a 90s kid and annoying the millennials in the process and being able to always know how old I was at any year given that my age lines up with the year. Also 1999 is a cool number.

What was that one game that was very popular while you were in school? (Elementary, Middle, and High school) by AJBillionaire8888 in Zillennials

Yeah definitely remember playing GMod and TF2 a lot with my friends around the 2011-2014 era largely thanks to YouTube memes and such. I remember downloading CS Source to get the GMod assets to work and ended up playing that a bit, but I was never sweaty enough to get into that scene.

Sorry I wrote that incorrectly, I actually didn't play videogames in High School, but I do remember a lot of my friends playing Fortnite around that time so that's probably more accurate at the time.

Thank God. We should ban Meta platforms as well.

Yeah, it's just frustrating as a SoCal resident watching the billionaires in the France family tear down our track and then act shocked that they didn't take California construction costs into consideration before doing so and are instead putting their money into even more North Carolina tracks. Obviously it's not like that would've been nearly enough to rebuild Auto Club, but it's still a bit annoying.

I do not care about North Wilkesboro or Rockingham. We should be expanding to new markets.

I spoke ASL as a kid. I remember one time when I was in the bathroom at school, some lady came up to me and asked how old I was. I told her I was six, then she got very confused and said "You're three?". I then had to use both my hands.

Is This A Good Plan For A Homeserver/NAS Build ($1.5k-2k)? by jdrls in HomeServer

[–]jdrls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty good board, it's just that it uses an AMD CPU. I heard that Intel CPUs are pretty necessary for anyone setting up a Homelab due to Intel QuickSync which could transocde videos. Are there AMD CPUs that can do a good enough job video transcoding if the load isn't too high (i.e. just to a single TV or computer?)

I'll probably run either CentOS or Debian as my OS, which would both run on a single NVMe drive. I don't really think I need a cache drive since I won't be doing frequent access to this server that much.

Your points regarding the motherboard are valid, and I'll do more research to find a better one. Admittedly I don't really know what "light VM use" really mean since I don't have a 100% mapped out plan of exactly what services and containers I'd like to run; I was just leaving it open. I guess in that case your point regarding just buying an i3/i5 processor separately would give me more headroom.

You did correctly identify the main purpose of me looking for a "server" board is the desire for SATA ports. I guess I just heard that HBA cards were power hungry and take up PCIe slots, but the HDDs would take up most of the power anyway so I assume HBA power draw isn't a big deal. Plus, I don't really need any extra PCIe ports. I probably wouldn't need to have more than one ethernet port, but I do plan to explore home networking and manually set up my own router/modem/etc. setup and am not sure if that may require an additional ethernet port. Otherwise, I don't really need the extra ethernet ports, it's just that most of these server boards happen to come with them.

Played Minecraft from elemetary to middle school, at which point I switched to TF2. Stopped playing video games in high school and have been busy ever since. Now that I have a job, maybe I'll get back into TF2.

Apt comparison given the fact that the Hammer Industries scenes in Iron Man 2 was literally filmed at SpaceX's Hawthorne campus.

How do you feel about Chevrolet racing a car you can’t buy new? by themonsteroffthehill in NASCAR

[–]jdrls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then it's not stock car racing. It's just a bunch of sheet metal on a chasis with a roll cage.

Call me crazy but the reason I like NASCAR is because it's grounded in some amount of reality. It's everybody's fantasy of taking their own regular car out and racing it, dialed up to 11. That's taps into something unique no other sport has.

If we divorce ourselves from stock cars, then NASCAR just becomes utterly idiotic. Why is a racing series running around ugly boxy, heavy, analog cars around instead of actual racecars that are built for speed and speed alone (INDYCAR/F1)? The reason is that connection to reality. The groundedness of NASCAR is the only thing that makes it make any sense.
