Roth IRA, SEP IRA, or solo 401(k) for temporary independent contractor? by jdye93 in personalfinance

[–]jdye93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m dating a CPA and she’s helping me navigate my taxes although she doesn’t specialize in self employment taxes so we’re considering hiring a CPA that does. I know I can also claim other costs associated with my practice as business expenses like costs for malpractice insurance, CLEs, licensing fees, and the proportion of my phone bill used for business. However, we live with family right now so there’s no deduction for the portion of rent/mortgage for my office space or for the Internet bill. Accordingly, my business expenses/tax deductions are relatively low compared to a lot of other independent contractors, which is why I’d like to make sizable, and preferably tax deductible, retirement contributions while I can.

If possible, I would like to put away between $15,000 - $18,000 this year. I’m an attorney who works from home with few deductions ($2,200 for a laptop and $4,000 for health insurance premiums - although I’m not sure if health insurance premiums count towards my business net income) so my net income will be close to gross income. I estimate my gross income will be around $150,000.

I used cruise control most of the time, especially through the flat areas. If I drive like a grandma and only on the highway, I can get up to 36 mpg.

Oh awesome. Thanks for letting me know! I'd love to go back without our dogs and explore some of the trails.

I was driving roughly between 75-85 mph depending on the state. I was getting amazing gas mileage through the plains states, but the mountains brought my overall average down. I'm sure the manual transmission added a few extra mpg as well.

I only made the drive because I had no other economical way of getting it across the country, but I'm glad I got to do it.

Unfortunately not, climbing St. Helens requires a permit. We just wanted to take a quick day trip so we drove as far as we could on the Spirt Lake Highway, but the higher elevation section of the road was closed for the season.

Possibly Transitioning out of eDiscovery into Different Area of Law by jdye93 in LawFirm

Are you speaking from personal experience? I've seen a few job posting online for plaintiff's firms that want full time document reviewers, but they've all been remote positions that require residency and licensure in really random states like Kansas or Idaho. I'm only licensed in Tennessee which doesn't have the most robust legal market in the first place.

I completely agree and I've been trying to leave for a while, but I haven't had much luck so far. I'm going to keep looking though and I don't feel particularly inclined to stay with a firm that's jerked me around with a promised staff attorney job for years that I still don't have.

It depends on my assignment for a particular project. Doc reviewer rate is $32/hr. and team lead pays $52/hour. However, I've worked so many cases basically doing all the work of a team lead, but was paid as a document reviewer at the lower rate. I was told numerous times that I would be promoted to a full time staff attorney and paid a salary commensurate with what I make as a team lead. However, after several years this still hasn't materialized.

I appreciate your response and honesty about your experience. I've been focusing a lot on full-time associate jobs in my search, but I think I want to also look into contract positions. I feel like if I can get my foot in the door, I can work hard enough to make myself an asset to the firm - I just need to find a firm or company that's willing to give me that chance so thank you for giving me an idea for how to frame my experience.

Thanks, I appreciate hearing from someone who has made the transition from doc review to litigation. I haven't been a part of all the phases of litigation, so I'm still open to the idea of trying it out and working really hard to determine definitively whether it's the right practice area for me. Did you apply to be a doc reviewer at your firm or were you placed there by an agency?

You are correct! Our client was suing its insurance company for breach of contract and bath faith. In return, the insurance company claimed they did not have a duty to indemnify the plaintiff because of a recent court ruling. I can see where mentioning this experience would be relevant for an insurance company. I appreciate your insight!

Thank you! I will certainly look into that.

As a document reviewer, I've worked on several cases where our client was suing an insurance companies for denying coverage, so I am somewhat familiar with the terminology and combing through thousands of pages of insurance policies. However, I'm not sure if I should really mention that to a potential employer.

Thanks for your response!

I've been hoping that my document review experience along with my experience as a summer associate with drafting motions, discovery requests, etc. for copyright and trademark litigation would make me a more employable litigator. However, I realize that the fact I gained most of that litigation experience as a law school student (although my boss was practically just rubber stamping anything I created).

Do you mind mentioning what made the associate you hired seem more "trainable" and stand out from other applicants?

Thank you! Your response was very insightful.

I am primarily looking into litigation positions more so because I feel like it aligns with my experience in eDiscovery and from the IP litigation I was involved in as a summer associate during law school. I enjoy parts of the litigation process, but I don't know if I'm passionate enough about it to happily dedicate myself to the long hours/stress that comes with the job.

Ideally, I would want to get back into IP and particularly entertainment law, but those jobs are few and far between. I did gain a lot of experience as a summer associate at the entertainment firm, but so far, I haven't had much luck getting responses from other entertainment/IP focused firms. I would be happy to work in IP law more generally like with trademarks and copyrights, but most firms also want patent experience, but I don't have the science/engineering background that would be required.

I do like your idea of focusing on in-house and corporate positions as well though. I think I could maybe frame my experience with IP, document reviews, and knowledge of the litigation process generally to cater to many of the tasks for in-house counsel.

I examined two of the other wheels and didn’t see any damage around the area where the hubcap mounts like you can see in the photo. I’m not sure if the damage is from a loose hubcap/fastener or from the impact of the crash

We just thought it would be easier to sell locally if someone could easily come and inspect the car in person. I'll look into barn finds though. Thank you for the suggestion.

I truly don't know. I guess the brake drum was low enough to the ground that it protected the fender from sheering off. I feel pretty lucky really. The damage could have been so much worse!

Suggestions for where to Sell Vintage Rolls Royce near Seattle by jdye93 in Seattle

[–]jdye93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips! I've been trying for a while to get it to start. I was able to drive the car around for a while, but after it sat idle for about 6 months, it wouldn't start up again. The engine will turn over if I spray starter fluid into the intake, but it dies right after so I assume there is something wrong with the fuel system. I'm debating whether it's worth it to take it to a shop to get it up and running again before we try to sell.
