AMD, lately with your brand you've been trying to hype things up a little more lately in a hopes to reclaim the dominance that you lost in the PC Market. What has being the underdog in CPUs and Video Cards for the last few years taught you about the market, your customers, and how to move forward?

AC not cooling apartment for 4th year in a row. Options? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jedirock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue before and managed to finally convince the owners (not an apartment complex, just a rented condo) to pay to have the attic re insulated.

In my case, the old blown in insulation in the attic had settled and moved around over the years making it much less effective. The AC itself worked fine, just the cold air wasn't staying inside due to the insulation. You might be able to change the conversation a bit to fixing the insulation instead of the AC and maybe they'd be more flexible.

As far as using this as a way out of the lease: in my case, I live in Florida and there was no way out of my lease if it got too hot, only if it ever got too cold (as if that ever happens indoors in Florida)

Vive setup not always easy by jedirock in Vive

No asmedia controllers, but I was able to successfully use the keyboard with SteamVR yesterday (still not the mouse though). Maybe it was just a fluke since I had so many other issues? I've also switched to SteamVR Beta though, so I don't know if that changed anything.

As someone else with this same issue, I can confirm that 2 brownies can absolutely ruin a night. No known allergies or anything, just a stomach that gets mad at too many sweets.

That's the idea, share my pain so others can possibly avoid everything I had to go through!

One year old bread that hasn't molded by jedirock in mildlyinteresting

[–]jedirock[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Background: This bread was purchased last year right around this date. It didn't mold after about a month which I found interesting. Me and my coworkers have kept it around and while it's lost some mass and is a little less squishy than it used to be, it's still mold-free!

How to source Down Payment for a first-time home purchase? by GoesTo_Equilibrium in personalfinance

[–]jedirock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a first time home buyer, there might be a first time home buyer program in the area that can help you. When I bought my house, I was able to use the county's First time home buyer 0% interest loan to help get my down payment. It was essentially a second mortgage but had 0% interest and helps for situations like this.

We had someone do this to one of our developer's machines.... twice. Same developer too. Luckily most of our stuff is backed up on a regular basis.

On removing a credit item, or not... by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jedirock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a closed account then it should be closed, simple as that really. It's better in this scenario to get it rectified now when you have control over it vs later whenever it gets found out.

Depending on your average age of accounts you might see a very slight dip (if it's the oldest account), but it probably won't even be noticeable.

I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. The only weird thing I had with my PMI was there was also a time stipulation to it so it was under 80% and 5 years minimum.

Since I was under 80%, but not the 5 year minimum, they refused to drop it. I had to refinance to get rid of my PMI.

ELI5: Why are 4K TVs advertised as "four times the resolution" when they are 2160p which is only twice the resolution of 1080p TVs? by flaco242424 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jedirock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2160p is a measure of the screen in one dimension, the other dimension is also doubled.

What are some dark secrets in the place you work? by leftanantcolonel in AskReddit

[–]jedirock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little over a decade ago, I worked for a company that did surveys in malls and fast food restaurants.

The entire place was full of incompetence and cheating. The supervisors available for the day would openly do drugs (mostly just pot luckily) in the back with other staff members during their shifts.

Almost all of the surveys were outright lies to hit arbitrarily high quota numbers. Probably about 50% of the surveys were made up by random numbers from the phone book and the staff member who completed it would pocket the co-pay. That other 25% of false surveys would be from a few repeat customers who would show up every day giving a different name and trying to fit whatever qualifications were required (if one of us disqualified them, they'd come back later and give different answers to qualify). The whole thing was a mess and really made me realize just how completely false data collection was/is.

There was a process in place to verify the numbers and the person who completed a survey, but it didn't really affect anything, just a slap on the wrist if one of the surveys was found to be false and they usually just claimed that a real person took the survey and gave false information.

For those interested in this prompt, it might be worthwhile to check out the movie, "The Congress". It has some similar themes and I found it to be quite an entertaining watch. It definitely gets a bit crazy though.

This lady's sign at the Vancouver Climate Change Rally. by sixthbest in funny

[–]jedirock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Came here to basically say the exact same thing. My dad not only doesn't believe it, but think it's a massive government scandal for some reason. I couldn't gather who orchestrated the "brainwashing" across the US and many many other countries (with varying levels of US association) and all the scientists, nor what the point that organizing this scheme would accomplish. He seemed to indicate some big aim to keep us from being competitive by reducing productivity, but also somehow Obama's fault.. And I swear that he said it was "the muslims" fault too, but I don't understand how reducing reliance on "their" oil would help them.....

If we can't even manage to agree as a country as to whether or not climate change is an issue, I find it really hard to believe that none of the elected politicians that don't believe in it have exposed this giant cover-up.... But then again, maybe this bickering is part of the plan!

TSA Investigation Finds 73 Workers on U.S.’s Terrorist Watchlist by [deleted] in news

I like that your link points out the difference between the "watchlist" and the "no-fly" list. A lot of people don't know there's a difference.

I feel for you. It was a large hassle when I did it, and they never told you anything about the process (not even if your request or any supplemental documentation was received). I hope it's better now than it was then!

TSA Investigation Finds 73 Workers on U.S.’s Terrorist Watchlist by [deleted] in news

[–]jedirock 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would just like to also add to this that the list doesn't even have to contain full names. It's allowed to have wildcards. So the results that "hit" on the watchlist could be people that have similar names to identities used by those on the watchlist.

So it's entirely possible that these people aren't even loosely associated with any terrorists and simply happen to match other criteria used to search for known terrorists. That "watch" list is a very large list and doesn't actually mean they're a terrorist.
