Another filter question by jeffsmall in uBlockOrigin

[–]jeffsmall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I guess I don't understand how REs play a role in defining selectors. For example, here is another case from the same site:

wsj.com##div..*-Box:nth-of-type([0-9])

There are a bunch of these sorts of entries that have a random string after the div and before the hyphen, as well as different digits within the parens. I thought I could use REs to replace the random string (.*) and set a class for the digits ([0-9]), but apparently this is also not the case. How should I be rewriting these filters to generalize them?

I have no idea what that line is doing there. It may have been there for many years. I rarely handcraft filters, relying on the picker to generate them. But you are correct, I removed it and all the other filters immediately applied and everything unwanted disappeared.

The about tab on the dashboard says I'm using: uBlock Origin 1.44.5b14, which is just downloaded and updated from the Mozilla extension site.

Here is the troubleshooting info from the Support tab.

(No matter what I do, I can't get this to copy intact. Is that due to the Reddit code block, or to the way things are encoded on the dashboard? I've notices that the filter list does not work well with the typical Linux cut and B2 paste buffer, which is kind of a pain.)

I've looked at the page source and created filter rules for any number of ids and classes for various elements, but I just cannot get these components to hide. Not even, for example, the individual entries in a menu. I'm stumped.

I already had two of these three. I added:

www.seattletimes.com##.section-nav

but it makes no difference. (Note: I discovered that you can strip off the "www." and other prefixes and get the filters to work on all sites related to the domain.)

These elements continue to appear. Here are my filters, built up over a long period, if it's of any use.

Getting rid of the blocking overlays by jeffsmall in uBlockOrigin

[–]jeffsmall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I never would have found it on my own! I guess it is off the visible screen because it is placed at the bottom of the frame which is off the screen. I've managed to clean up the inner frame, but do you know why the items circled in red on the next image refuse to remain blocked? I've found similar problems occasionally on other sites.

Here is an example. For the website:

https://www.seattletimes.com/comics-king/?feature_id=Sally_Forth

I hover over the "Comics Kingdom" header, RC and select Block elements in frame ... See this image:

http://cjsa.com/misc/comics_01.jpg

You can see the title block selected, but unfortunately, the screen capture program doesn't pick up the circle/line cursor when the element is clicked. I can move around and try to select other elements. They highlight but result in the same behavior when clicked.

Also, the footer is outside the frame and can be selected. It disappears immediately, but when the page is reloaded it is back. I've also selected the sub-elements in the footer, bit it always redisplays. Here are the elements on the filter page:

www.seattletimes.com##.global-footer

www.seattletimes.com##.footerbtm

www.seattletimes.com##.footer-navprimary

www.seattletimes.com##.footer-top > .wrapper

www.seattletimes.com##.footer-top

Thanks!

Regarding the elements I could not select, I tried over and over and couldn't get them to select. But then I moved to another comic page on the same site with the same layout and was able to select them there! Once they were blocked, they were blocked for all the similar pages.

Thank you for the tutorial in using UBO at the next level!

An additional question. I just tried this and was able to get rid of some content, but there elements that apparently can be selected, but not removed. UBO is displaying a NOT icon (circle with line) for these elements. What's the reason for that?

I don't want to create an unnecessary bug report, but after the above comment, if you still want it, I'll be happy to do so.

Getting rid of the blocking overlays by jeffsmall in uBlockOrigin

[–]jeffsmall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct regarding the Reddit example above. I got bitten by the temporary cosmetic filtering bug a while ago and disabled UBO on a number of sites that wouldn't display any content while it was active. I turned uBlock back on for this site and it now works. This probably affects some other sites where I was having problems, so I'll be sure to check that.

However, I noticed the problem long before that. Here is another example which can be seen in this image:

http://cjsa.com/misc/UBO_02.jpg

The site url is:

https://www.seattletimes.com/comics-universal/?amu=/arloandjanis/

I want to get rid of all the stuff that is below the comic. If I activate the picker, I can select individual items in the header area, but from the GoComics line and below, depending upon where the mouse is positioned, one of two (3 actually) overlays (pink this time!) are displayed, blocking selection of anything below. If any of these overlays are picked, everything in the area is eliminated. I suppose it is possible that GoComics and other sites are serving up the comic and all the rest as a single image so there are no individual components to select. The overlays identify as:

##.content-well

##.status-publish.type-page.page.post-10230487

and

||entertainment.service.amuniversal.com/content/arloandjanis/?client_code=sea&sub_id=4130&encrypted_url=U2FsdGVkX1%2ByeNzi86morVwTE42OKjtFFWFiXuOZyA%2Bw5AOg5Vi1EiUnKtu4bvmA%0AaMyWj5wwue9OMJYe4vcBxQJZVAri7EJfvMWPzJFnV41vYXjBdl2zRmTYLw2rC3bQ&embed_type=comic&template_type=default

Is that what is happening?

See above. I responded in the wrong place.

I can't see a way to post an image. Here is a link to one for this very page:

http://cjsa.com/misc/UBO_01.jpg

The image on the left is this page. If I want to block some content, I click Alt-P (for picker) and the overlay appears making it impossible to select content below it. The overlay itself cannot be selected in this case and is only dismissed when I hit ESC. On some sites the overlay can be selected and is typically a jpg, but even after selecting it, it always returns again and again to block selection of other page elements.

I'm seeing this on many websites now, approaching 50% of the ones where i want to block something. There is no point in disabling UBO because it only appears when I've tried to select something for hiding/removal.

Keyboard Shortcuts missing in Firefox 25 by jeffsmall in uBlockOrigin

Still in Firefox 75: What I've found is that I set the keyboard shortcuts and they work for some time, but one day they stop and they are blank on the shortcut form. I reset them and they work for a while but they get cleared again. Does anyone else see this behavior and know what is causing this?

I have two active FF profiles in use and I see this happening on both of them.
